The 10 most notable modern military strategists

Tomoyuki Yamashita deserves a spot more than Yamamoto. Malaya and Singapore were Japan's most impressive victories.

Yamashita rates pretty high in most people's books. I don't know enough of his story yet - but I think I need more than Malaya and Singapore to rate him higher - was he also in the Philippines in 1944 ? Anyway - Yamammoto played a part in the early victories as well as the Guadalcanal Naval battles - he's more of an icon of the war if you ask me. But granted any extended list should include Yamashita.

Yamamoto was in a position to win, and lost. Yamashita was in a position to lose, and won.

To me, there's really no comparison. Just because Yamamoto is more well-known doesn't make him a better commander. You should know that, by virtue of the fact that you put Manstein on the list but not Rommel.

Ultimately Yamashita lost too - but did he lose well, or poor, even considering his circumstances ? Yamamoto won well and only lost at Midaway, I'd say, but just as Nimitz only takes partial glory for the USN victories, so Nagumo must take most of the blame for Midway. Anyway I'll read up on the guy.

I would add that it isn't just that Yamamoto is well known, it was also his attitude towards the war and ethics, Yamashita stood trial for war crimes and was executed, rightfully or not.
