As a general rule, I don't take breaks. (I know, I know, what's this then?)
This weekend, however, that rule was broken. Due to fortuitous scheduling, I managed to find a few hours to kick back. When I discovered that one of my suitemates had a copy of Civilization III lying aroumd, I knew that was just the ticket. So we fired up Hotseat and played for a few hours, mostly Rise of Rome.
That night, I came online and found TAM. My friend had downloaded it the next day, and despite a heavy scheduele and a pledge not to play until the weekend, couldn't keep himself from opening the map, nearly knocking down my door, and insisting we play.
I took Carthage, and he took Egypt. Thus far, it's been an interesting game. Hotseat does a number on the faction distribution; we have only a handful of the total numbers one would find in a normal game due to the inherent restrictions of the multiplayer format. That's okay, however, as we are both taking the time to expand and build up formidable pocket empires.
My friend surged ahead thanks to Egypt's capacity for rapid growth, and quickly built five cities to my three. He's got the formidable core of an army, and already managed to raze one Israeli city, turning Solomon's state into a tributary. I'm a bit flummoxed, sitting all alone in North Africa with only a fraction of the resources. Thankfully, however, I just stumbled onto some horses, which has given me chariots, and the means to quick exploration (and, hopefully, some expansion as well).
So far, I'm enjoying myself thoroughly. Just thought I'd share.
