I'm pretty skinny for my height (120 5' 7"), so what would be the best way to GAIN weight? The anti-atkins diet? Eat only carbs? My guess is no but i thought of this while reading the atkins thread so whatever. Got any ideas?

As a man who is the same height as you and weighs 50% more (5'7" 182lbs), I can tell you excellent advice on how to gain weight :) (I'm not fat BTW). You may not want to do the Atkin's diet, but you should still take in a good amount of protein.

-I suggest a serving of pasta an hour before you work out.
-Take 2 teaspoons of honey right before you workout (works like natural, cheaper Creatin).
-Then eat half a serving of carb, and a serving and a half of protein after workout.
-to avoid gaining fat while gaining weight, eat a big breakfast, smaller lunch and yet smaller dinner (but make sure you're full)

I heard nto be stuffed full, but at a comfertable level. Another suggestion i heard was not 3 large meals, but 5-7 smaller eating sessions. Also make sure you have protine for breakfast to help you metabolism out

Mow down the protein, and lift weights habitually.

You don't want to gain weight like my dad, who simply ate way too much for several years (including the present time) with hardly any exercise.

Just eat alot. :p

I'm skinny too, and its probably because I don't eat enough meat. Most meals I eat are pasta-based....

I'm not interested in gaining weight quickly or right away though, because I'm on the track team. Maybe later ;)

Do you do long distance running by chance?

Not terribly off the topic but:

For those of you who advocate a high-protein diet, are you able to satisfy the recommended dosage with a regular meal-based routine or do you need to supplement your diet with protein shakes/bars? I find it would be incredibly difficult for a person with a light frame to ingest so much protein with food and milk alone.

Well, how much do you weigh? The usual recommendation is 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight..and there's about 50g of protein in a chicken breast..add to that the amount you get from milk throughout the day and eggs, other meats, etc. it's not that hard to meet your requirements especially if you don't weight that much.

Adding more grain and meat to your diet.

This will surely f*** up your intestinal health in the long term.

Be happy you are lean. 120lb for 5'7" ain't that thin. You gotta remember most Americans are overweight and though it is socially considered rude to point it out to them everyone seems to love telling healthy folks that they are "too thin".

If you want to bulk up - work out. The more excersize you get, the more efficiently your body will use whatever fuel you give it.

If you really want to gain weight just for the hell of it though go on Depakote.

P.S. : If it makes you feel better, just remember, the average American has 20-30lbs of undigested crap in their digestive system. So I say, better to be thin and pure than average weight and full of s***. :)

You don't need that much protein. Besides milk protein is pretty much indigestable and drinking alot of milk will probably make you sluggish and create a lot of flem. When you cook meat you destroy about half the protein in it. Even athletes need only about 40-50g's a day. Best source of protein is hemp seeds, mung beans and sea vegtables are also excellent sources. If you eat alot of meat and drink alot of milk you probably won't have the energy to excersize much anyway. Remember that when you consume excess protein your body has to work harder to get rid of it. This stresses your digestion and takes energy away that could be used elsewhere.

Power Bar pushers and the meat industry would like to have you think that you'll die if you don't get enough protein but really it's not a problem. How many people do you know who go to the hospital for protein definiancy  ? America is a culture of overindulgence. Our diseases come from overconsumption rather than deficiencies. So have no worries, just excersise and eat when you're hungry until just before you're full and pay attention to how what you eat makes you feel.

As a test, try eating 1000 calories worth of bananas, about 10 (on an empty stomache) and then a few hours later see how you feel.

The next day, try eating 1000 calories worth of meat or grain and see how you feel afterwards.

Good luck Mum!

You're really wrong about the protein (milk protein indigestable, milk makes you sluggish, etc..where do you get this stuff?), but absolutely right about the Depakote. My doctor put me on it to try to prevent migraines and not only did it not help, but I went from about 155 to ~185 pounds.:(

"this will surely f*** up your intestinal health in the long term."

hmm sure. Any studies supporting this?

"Be happy you are lean. 120lb for 5'7" ain't that thin. "

Are you kidding me  ? Also keep in mind theres a difference in adding weight and adding muscle...

"You gotta remember most Americans are overweight and though it is socially considered rude to point it out to them everyone seems to love telling healthy folks that they are "too thin"."

Yes, you also gotta remember that this guy obviously doesn't want to put on fat as a source of weight but rather muscle. I dont know about you or anyone else, but I would rather gain some muscle then be "too thin".

"If you want to bulk up - work out. The more excersize you get, the more efficiently your body will use whatever fuel you give it."

First off your wrong here. Weightlifting is an anaerobic activity so the chance of burning many calories/body fat is pretty low. Second of all, hypertrophy doesn' just take place from working out. You yet to even list the volume, rep ranges to lose, TUT, frequency, etc. Yes, it does get more complicated then simply workout out. So you don't even know what type of hypertrophy the person is aiming for.

"P.S. : If it makes you feel better, just remember, the average American has 20-30lbs of undigested crap in their digestive system. So I say, better to be thin and pure than average weight and full of s***. :)"

I'm not sure if your trying to be a moron or it just comes naturally :) . For the 3rd time this post, the guy has said he wants to gain weight (muscle).

Once again I'd like to see some studies backiing up your bull**** claims. Its been shown athletes need more protein and if you'd like, I actually have studies.

"Best source of protein is hemp seeds, mung beans and sea vegtables are also excellent sources."

These protein sources are incomplete. You obviously dont know what your talking about.

"If you eat alot of meat and drink alot of milk you probably won't have the energy to excersize much anyway. "

why not? Its protein.... since when does protein slow you down?

"Remember that when you consume excess protein your body has to work harder to get rid of it. This stresses your digestion and takes energy away that could be used elsewhere."

Eating more protein has the same effect of eating more of any macronutrient. Calorie levels will increase. If you knew better, this would do the exact opposite of what you just said. The protein would be used to recover muscle tissue and build new muscle.

"Power Bar pushers and the meat industry would like to have you think that you'll die if you don't get enough protein but really it's not a problem. How many people do you know who go to the hospital for protein definiancy:"

No one said you'll get sick and go to the hospital if your an athlete who doesnt get enough protien. Your progress will lack and you will probably feel weaker. Thats all. lmao a powerbar has 9 grams of protein per bar. Once again, a nice study to support your ****ty claims would be nice.

"America is a culture of overindulgence. Our diseases come from overconsumption rather than deficiencies. So have no worries, just excersise and eat when you're hungry until just before you're full and pay attention to how what you eat makes you feel."

There are also cleaner healthier foods you can eat. When people say to eat more, they dont mean 2 more pies of pizza but rather some low glyimec carbs and mono/poly fats and of course protien that are complete not like your crappy incomplete vegetables.

"As a test, try eating 1000 calories worth of bananas, about 10 (on an empty stomache) and then a few hours later see how you feel."

WTH would this do? lmfao

ps - its exercise

If you want I can give you some links so you can actually have a clue :crazyeye: .

1) First off where is the study that shows Milk is indigestible and will make you sluggish. (that is the most idiotic pseudo-science i have seen)

2) Where is your study to show that cooking meat kills 1/2 the protein?

3) What athletes are you talking about that only need 40-50g of protein? Protein are not just for your muscles, they are for vital organs and serve many purposes. THE FACT that you bodybuilding and breaking DOWN muscle tissue just shows exactly how much protein you really need. Protein = needed for muscle growth and repair. Do you honestly think that on 50g of protein a day, that will be enough to be used on Vital organs, and all those muscles you are breaking down? The answer is no!

You must be one stupid skinny son of a *****, if you think that

4) I have to give you credit on your system working harder, You are on the right track my son. By ingesting protein, it does speed up your metabolism in a way. You will certainly have a lot of energy for exercise.
*ever hear of carbs? Carbohydrates? I'm sure you have*

5) yes I have not heard of people going to the hospital for protein deficiencies, but i have heard of bodybuilders, who sweat and die in the gym, and do everything proper but do not grow, because they are not ingesting enough protein.

(maybe you need to re-evaluate your knowledge and put your foot in your mouth before you spit out worse information that a beginner might read)

6) And lastly. What the fvck did you say "Good Luck Mum" for???

And not before you exercise.

I hear horror stories from track kids who drank a ton of milk before a race...
