Seriously, It's completely unreasonable..Most forums limit it at 20 kbs.

Any chance I could get my avatar up or something? It's 16 kbs

Be awesome like me and you can have larger...:mischief:

Yes, it's arbitrary. That doesn't make it unreasonable.

As far as I'm aware the avatar size hasn't varied for a long period of time so it would be reasonable to have an increase since generally connections have improved.

If you allow avys to be hosted offsite, then it's less of a problem to allow them to be bigger.

This is the one I use the most.

I must admit I like larger avatars too, and it would be nice to have animated ones... but some people are still on dial-up. Too much animation makes pages godawful slow to load, which isn't fair to anyone.

I wonder... if it came to a choice, would people rather have larger non-animated avatars or smaller animated ones?

I'd prefer to keep it non animated. The animated ones distract me as I read. It took me easly twice as long as normal to read your post because of Cutlass' thing above it always made my eyes wander up. It detracts from the text, which is the important part.

I'm all for larger ones though.

Please keep in non-animated, it's one of the things I love about CFC (and no pictures in sigs, too).

The size doesn't matter IMHO, 100x100 is perfectly ok for me, but please don't allow avatars that skew the forum design (anything larger than 100x100 is too big). I don't understand why the limit on size though, as long as animated ones are banned.

I am also all for larger non-animated avatars. In this time and age, bandwidth is not such an issue I think.

So how about it, TF? :)

Larger = Yes
Animated = No
Sigs? = No

I would vote neither! I think avatars are just fine the way they are.

Its not quite the same thing, but there exists today an option to upload a larger picture into your profile. It can be found in your control panel. HTH

One of the nice things about CFC is that avatar size is in kept at a reasonable level. The main purpose of avatars is to help identify the poster, which they currently do just fine.

While making them bigger would give people more room to express their creativity, chances are that the people who can't find anything suitable for 70x70 would still produce eyesores if the limits were increased. They'd just be harder to overlook.

As for animated avatars:

When I go on other fora, and I see great big animated avatars, and also immense sigs that dwarf the actual posts and are full of dancing junk, I am very glad for the policy on this site. Personally I think avatars are a total waste of time and a distraction in the first place and I would be quite happy not to have them. To have them actually animated and therefore even more of a distraction is just an atrocity. If you want to see dancing things all over your screen then go and play a game!

My PANIC! avatar was better... (if only I could find it...)

I really like having avatars. Pictures are easier to identify quickly than names, and it allows posters to wiggle a bit with their identity.

They're just big enough. Any smaller and they'd be too difficult to fit anything good into (my current av excepted :p), any larger and they'd be too much like Abaddon's. (Actually I don't see a problem with Ab's size, but larger than that would be too much.)

Animation is a terrible terrible terrible idea. I would adblock any animated avatars. There's enough crap on this planet trying to grab my attention by flashing pretty colors, I don't need more of it here.

It would be nice if the file size was upped a little bit, though. I've run into problems with that before. I can't imagine a few extra kb would overwhelm the servers, especially considering most regular users end up with most regular avatars cached anyway, right?

lol @ people here being so against larger avatars & sigs...saying it's too distracting :lol: - as far as i know every site i have ever posted on you have the ability to NOT see sigs & avatars...so why not just shut them off...

as much as i love his site i think it is filled w/ some crabby people who dislike change. this is THE BEST civ site for information and knowledge. people are ridiculously great at this game...but the site looks like it's still stuck in 2001

live a little >:O

:lol:
