I do my own oil changes, wiper blades, etc. However, I recently had the "check engine" light on my '01 Mitsubishi Eclipse come on. I checked what I could (oil pressure, fluid levels, belts, plug fouling) but couldn't find anything. I took it to a mechanic who hooked the car up to his diagnostic computer. The problem was with the oxygen sensor. I didn't know the car had an oxygen sensor and I certainly couldn't check it's functioning myself.
Nowadays, you need a mechanic to do anything other than the basics on a car. 20 years ago you could buy a kit to rebuild a carburetor. What cars built in the past 15 years have carburetors? None that I know of.
