Oh, and by the way, when I was about to exit the game to save it, I pressed continue game to check on something I forgot.
Unfortunately that exited the game automatically, so I had to reopen the save and replay the turn before saving.

That's exactly what happened to me with that fateful turn I played in the MTDG, where I forgot to turn down the research slider the second time. (No, I haven't gotten over that yet )

I'll see if I can play the save (much) later tonight, after the ruckus dies down.

nice time but I was already doing different things...
I'll certainly need another 12 hours to GPS.

When I try to open any of our PBEM saves with CA2 I get the message "cannot open file, access is blocked."

No problems opening our MTGD saves with CA2.
No write protection on.
Computer restarted several times since I downloaded (some of those files).

Any idea what's wrong?

No idea. I have no problem opening any of the PBEM files with CAII. Sounds to me like an OS problem rather than anything to do with Civ or CAII.
