The Numidan Mercenary sucks... haven't tried the dromon yet! Doesn't the berserk require iron? I thought it did! Very funny comment on that one though! :D

A 2.3.1 unit that comes with a tech you can research from the start? Sounds pretty good to me.

Its fine. I must play with it before I can make a true judgement, but its sounds like a great UU. Better than any other naval UU I can think of...:mischief:

Although they gave the English UU a boost, right?

They gave it enslavement

The Dromon is great, finally more naval power in the game. I would rather see the Cataphract but oh well. Hey, you know what? Why doesn't somebody just make a mod two add 2 UUs to each civ.. yeah that sounds much better.

The Berserk by the way still does not even require iron. What is that axe he has made out of? Wood?

That is surprisingly realistic. Unlike today, there were no Iron mines in Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages. The Vikings used surface deposits (the German word for it is 'Raseneisenerz', no clue how that translates -Turf Ore?) of poor quality, which could be found occasionally nearly everywhere by that time, at least everywhere where the Ice Age glaciers had left them. For example, the nails found at L'Anse aux Meadows are made out of it.
Due to the poor quality, it was hardly possible to make swords out of it, but for the Axes, it worked.

just make ships to kill them off if youre so mad at them.

Exactly. They are pretty easy to kill, having the same measly Defence as a Galley - 2 Cats and a Galley should easily do the job.

From a historical view, the Vikings had come to what is now the USA before Columbus, (before even Americo Vespuchi or whoever we were named after). But back to my point, the Vikings had come here before anyone that evidence shows, and the Vikings and the Native Americans got along, the Vikings didnt start a war. So who is to say those Berserkers arent using stone axes?

Or maybe im just ********.

Either way, i love the dromons. The Vikings are losing ground for my favorite civ. I see no need to downgrade the unit. I just think some people have to better prepare for water wars.

Remember; The enemy is plotting while youre pouting.

Fire Triremes did not attack cities.

If you think UUs should be given abilities that have nothing to do with historical truths just because 'hey, they're UU, they're supposed to be special', let's give Jagaur Warriors airdrop capabilities with a little bamboo helicopter.

- welcome to the light ;)

Merepatra tried to tell you so, but no-no-no, you wouldn't listen :p

bah, in comparison to the cataphrac they still suck the big the one, they just happen to be cool while doing ;)

What they should do is get rid of the dromon and give us a cataphract :D

why? look at how many uu horse units there are:
war chariot :egypt:
mounted warrior
samauri
rider
cossack
ansar warrior
coquistador (if you count that one)
sipahi
keshik
war elephant
(that's 10 units)

now lok at uu boats
man-o-war
(if you need me to count that leave now)

this adds more options to the naval power people

My biggest problem with the Dromon during my game as Byzantium (Midlde Ages Scenario) was that I was at war with nations that didn't have any ships! It took me a couple of extra hundred years to launch my golden age.

While unrealistic, the land bombard of the Dromon is great for softening up cities before taking them by land. In my game I will soon add all N Africa, to Greece, and the midlde east.

Keep it the same. It's a game folks.

In a tribute to Xen, I choose Byzantium for my first MA game!!

there is a VERY good reason why that is- because in reality, almost every one had distict, and unique forms of cavalry- but a UU is supposed to represent the pinnicle of a nations military, somthing which the dromon, and all fireship fall short of, while the cataphracr, in use for huindreds of years, and responsibel for no less then THREE MAJOR conqeusts by the Byzantine empire is by far the pinnicle of its military.

not to mention, the navey still sucks balls,. even with two naval UUs added.

if you want a more important navy, then make naval resources, and other things which nessesite real navy action, dont give rather lame excuses for a UU when a unit so much more useful could have been had- a naval UU fits portugal, and the dutch, but not Byzantium

 :goodjob:

neat-o :D

I am just playing my first game with the Byzantines, on sid level, and the Dromon rocks! It's like a steroid-enhanced galley on amphetamines with land and sea bombard ability on top, for the price of a normal galley! I've got a stack of about 12 of them now and they are just the most incredibly useful things in the world. They can nip around the coast and bombard cities and improvements to support your troops. They can sneak up on normal galleys and even caravels with their 4 movement and bombard them to death without risking any damage. Plus they have an incredibly cool-looking triple fire graphic.

What more could a civ player ask for? On a pangaea map they would be pretty useful. On an archipelago map they are just overpowered. The Byzantines may be my new favourite civ.

The Dromon is quite fine as it is.

The answer cannot be to lower it's stats, but to upgrade the other naval units so that they finally start to make sense.
And a little tip: give the Dromons to the Barbarians... that rocks!

If you want to be historically accurate, Varangian Guard were a lot more unique to the Byzantines than Kataphraktoi were.
