The End of Isolation and Birth of the Modern World

Ok, played for awhile as the French and here are some of the things that I noticed.

1.) I don't think the French had ironclads at the time

Sorry you are wrong, the first ever ocean going ironclad in history was La Gloire, launched by the french in 1859.

I have it working now - it looks like I had an extra folder in the directory messing things up. Can't wait to get it going!

1. I thought I fixed that and I thought I checked but I guess not. I really didn't mean to have that, I wanted only the USA and CSA to have ironclads.

Ah - Great Britain and France should have them too.

AWESOME Scenario I love the CSA THE RISE OF GENERAL LEE :) But why is the capital in montgamery it should be in Richmound but its Awesome the Confedracy is my favorite Civ ever !!!!1

It was a very tough decision for me of where the confederate Capital should be. Historically it began the war in Montgomery but quickly switched to Richmond. I chose Montgomery for this to keep it a little bit safer right away in the beginning to prevent the confederates from losing a capital immeadiately.

I have decided that all countries will be allowed to make Ironclads but only the confederacy will start with one.

The next version (1.1) will probably be released today. I know it's quick but there were a lot of little fixes to add and I am now including Italy as a playable country.

I have a couple of questions about version 1.1. Did you disable barbarians? I completed a game of the previous version last night, and by the end the barbarians had built at least 4 cities in northern Canada, and my guess is you didn't intend this to happen.

The other question is about forges. You mentioned that you added forges to the European cities, did you add forges to any American cities?

Hi. Been playing your scenario for the past couple days and would just like to comment on a few things I've noticed.

First off, Good job! I know this doesn't get said as nearly enough as it should be - you are a scenario maker doing this out in your spare time and as a fellow mod maker (albeit only a beginner) myself I know how annoying it is to see an endless list of seemingly petty complains without a single "Thank You" for all the hours you put into this. So I before I start my own "nitpicking" I would like to say Thank you, well done! :goodjob:

That being said however....

1. City Size/Population - This may sound petty to some but it just really annoys me how in so many Civ scenarios I play the Civ modders always seem to underestimate, and in some cases severely underestimate the appropriate city sizes. I mean, great cities like Milan and Munich should not be a size 2 or 3! I am not asking that you get out a thick history book to get the exact numbers on each and every city, but at least make "big" cities look big!

2. Relationship between Euro civs - I believe this has been touched on before but I think that more relationships and alliances between the civs, esp the Euro ones could be beneficial here. In the late 18th century in Europe, it was all about keeping a check on one's power and making sure that no one county gets too strong. This was particularly the role of Great Britain. Yet in the scenario I played, hardly anyone went to war, besides me of course :p (even the USA and Confederacy never went to war! I think you should consider putting them on permanent war) and I was able to (as Prussia) conquer most of Denmark, all of Germany and most of Austria without anyone getting too upset over it. Then I declared war on France, France started to beat me up and Great Britain then got MORE upset at me and not France!

In reality, if it really looked like France was about to conquer virtually all of Central Europe, GB would definitely have something to say about it. This really isn't all your fault though, one of the most disappointing aspects in Civ as far as I am concerned is diplomacy; there are far too few diplomatic options and even fewer than in previous versions! Very disappointing.

All in all, good work and I look forward to the next version!

Oh yea one more thing, if possible, would you mind putting up leaderhead images (even static ones straight off Yahoo images) that might correspond with the actual leaders of that time period? For example, an actual picture of Jeffrson Davis instead of Peter the Great, a modern Italian leader instead of Caesar and anyone Dutch instead of Alexander the Great??

I could help you find a few pics if you like, otherwise, it's no big deal, just help add to the realism.

1. As far as the populations of Italy goes, I needed a way to economically weaken them to represent the fact that they were just coming out of a revolution. However you are right about German Confederation cities, they probably should be larger. I'll take that into consideration for the next version. :goodjob:

2. About the relationship between Euro civs, you're right about me needing to have them hate each other more. I tried to make Prussia hate Austria and Germany and Britain hate France, but it never seems to spark any wars. When I add religion in the next version, probably just Catholicism and Protestantism, it'll create more inter civ hate and hopefully, wars. For instance, France is Catholic while England is primarilly Protestant, and Prussia is Protestant while the German Confederation is mostly Catholic. :religion:

3. If I can get some leader heads from one of the good civilization mods that move, I'll use those because static leaderheads really annoy me. They don't move and make me feel bad. :crazyeye:

Well, I just added religion to the game and it sure adds a ton of diplomacy that just wasn't there before. I played a game about 3/4 through as the Spanish, and here's what happened.

France declared war against me on 3 different occasions.
Portugal invaded.
Denmark declared war twice against me but did nothing?
Austria declared war once I was mostly destroyed.
In 1863 the USA reopened the civil war and in the same turn was invaded by Britain.
The Confederacy captured Washington for a few turns before Union troops took it back.
Netherlands invaded the German Confederation and took Cologne!
Also the Netherlands, Portugal, Denmark, Italy, and France all made defensive pacts between themselves which were canceled a lot because they kept attacking other countries.
Unfortuanately Italy didn't invade Naples as it should and Prussia stayed very uninvolved in diplomacy.

Sounds great. I'm glad you're still improving this scenario, I think it's going to be even more popular when some of the kinks are worked out. I think it might be a good idea to add in research at some point even if it's a limited tech tree that allows, say, the ability to get artillery and stuff like that. I got into a war with France as Prussia after taking everything in continental europe except Italy and I got into a stalemate that lasted 30 turns. It became boring and I lost interest in the game. Without taking over France I could never catch up to Britain's score. I think research would prevent that kind of situation from happening because I could have used some of the smaller cities to get me ahead technologically. I don't know, maybe this religion will add enough diplomatic options that it won't be necessary. In any case, you're already working hard so that's not a big priority. If you'd like though, I can think of a custom tech tree that's more broken down for the time period covered by this scenairo...

Very good scenario, small but fun.
There is only one small historical mistake.
In 1861 Belgium was independent so Brussels shouldnt be a dutch city
Since i am Belgian you maybe schould change it

completed it as spain, very fun and a great mod.
There is one problem however.
Confaderates have destroyers,battleships and transports!!
This is because there is an uranium recource near montgommery.
In your next version you have to remove that.

I suggest you rename the name of the people of the Confederate States to Confederate American.

It seems odd that the President of the United States is like "The Americans are evil! We must destroy them together!"

I also say this because if a European nation were to tell me this, I'd be like "North or South?"

Also, are you going to actually do anything with Africa?

(And it'd be nice if you didn't remove barbarians from the game entireley, like you plan too, and made them appearable in world builder)

Is the warlords expansion really worth buying, it really doesn't seem to bring anything that new to the table.

I think it's worth buying if only for the ability to have more than 18 total civilizations and the vassal states. The Unique Buildings really make choosing your civilization more important, as some civilizations now have great UBs (Ottomans and Korea for example) while others are near useless (Celtic Dun anyone?).
