The Fortress - Another ArrowNES

Do we really need elections?

We have (at least) 2 candidates to Mayor, who is pretty much the guy that is going to be directing the colony's policy and resource expenditure. So far, I've been doing that, but just provisionally, until the Mayor was actually chosen.

So, yeah, I think we need elections. It's going to be the only way to ensure there isn't a clusterf**k when two people try to give contradictory orders, like it happened in the last season.

Well I can't see the point of the NES if we have an elected leader.
"directing the colony's policy and resource expenditure"
What else is there to do in this NES?
I am not going to vote for either of you. I agree with SamSniped.

Do not vote. The people will vote. You just want anarchy to rule over our colony. You are really a traitor to our people.

You will not pick a King. Elections will take place every 4 turns.

Sure, let's do it your way. No Mayor, just a lot of people discussing what to do.

And then, when you say "Hey, I need a couple of builders to make sure that the mine doesn't fall on us", the others will say "Sorry, mate, we need all of the builders to build a secondary wall that will protect our farmlands," and then you'll say "Damn, I wish I had accepted having a mayor, we could use him to determine who gets what."

Or, the people from the Empire could come and ask "Who is your leader?" You'll answer "We have no leader, we are just ruled by a council." And then one of the Emperor's representatives will say "Well, since there is no leader, the Emperor has authorized me to become the Governor of this colony, with full powers, and if anyone has anything to say then tell those soldiers, who have been authorized to kill anyone that speaks out of turn." And then you'll say "Damn, why didn't I accept having a Mayor? He actually said that we would have a chance to speak out and make our points!" And then the Governor will have you killed for speaking out of turn.

See? Better someone you know you can negotiate with than either a bunch of someones that you can't be 100% sure will work to make sure you get something or someone that will outright ignore you and choose to maximize the benefits for the Empire while not caring about our own needs.

Also, let me point out that the current system has been basically me doing exactly what I have suggested for the Mayor position. Having elections would change nothing, save making sure there wouldn't be any problems with taking the important decisions and, at the same time, ensuring that no one becomes an all-powerful overlord.

Anyway, this is all dead in the water, only yourself and Christos want to vote, myself and Sam don't. You can both give yourself 1 vote and call it a draw. Unless I am mistaken, no one else is really playing.

I will give my vote to Milarqui in order to be able to create a strong government.

Alright, that's actually getting to a borderline insult, buddy. I care about our little colony just as much as you. I don't think we need a mayor, though.

Why don't we need a mayor? Just because you say so?

Not sure if you have noticed this, but the situation before this autumn was pretty much me suggesting a plan of action for the season and then, as you and a few others made suggestions, I improved them based on them. The only thing that is changing now is that the one person making the proposals has some authority, and can be changed every year if it is felt s/he isn't doing a good job.

So, please, instead of saying "No, no, no, there is no need for a mayor" without proof of why we don't need one, say "How much is going to change if we actually have a mayor?" and you'll realize the answer is "Little".

Also, do you remember when you said this?
To be honest, the military commander/officer now would be useful, to at least act as an Expedition Leader. I also think you would make a good mayor or leader, since you've organized plans well so far.
You pretty much agreed that we needed someone to act as the Expedition Leader/Mayor. This sudden change of opinion worries me.

I'll soon make my Colony Charter proposal.
