The Gaia War

Trying to keep updating, despite finals starting on the 9th (What better way to celebrate one's birthday?)

Part XIV
Infinite Energy

June 10, 2013
Schripian Research Camp, Main Impact Site

It was the same drill as last time. The black ops swam to their target under the cover of darkness. Security was even more lax here than the Arigosian facilities; no sentries were found on the shores as the black ops surfaced. Like shadows, they moved towards the lights of the Schripian camp.

The silence was torn as light flashed through the darkness, accompanied by a booming noise. One of the black ops went down, clutching the stump that was left of his leg. Another moved to assist the man, before another flash brought him down. The realization that they were standing in a minefield struck the ops hard, and they froze in place, eyes desperately looking over the ground for any sign of the mines.

With the noise and lights of the mines alerting the Schripians, they opened up on the beach with artillery fire. With no cover, and trapped from retreat by the water, the Omegians were forced to push forward through the minefield. Casualties were heavy, and by the time they came in range of the Schripian's small arms, only a handful were left. With nowhere to hide from the bullets and artillery, the black ops were all mercilessly cut down. Within minutes, the Omegians had been wiped out, and the skies were lit with cruise missiles soaring towards the Omegian transport fleet.

Omegian Military Command, Austin, Omegia

"We've had how many casualties?" The disbelief was evident in General Peter's voice. He was hoping that somehow, the second time he heard the numbers, they would be different.
He was talking to a screen, showing the outskirts of the Schripian Research Camp. Smoke was rising from the camp, and explosions from inside were still visible from the screen. The captain whom he was speaking with was currently the highest ranked surviving officer in the area. With the confidence of a man who has already gone through hell, the captain responded, "Two groups of black ops, an infantry division, a tank division, two attack helicopter groups, one transport flotilla, a Kraken Class Cruiser, one Deathwing Fighter wing, and five Reaper Bomber wings."
"What of enemy casualties?"
"Still difficult to determine at this point, but we think we may have destroyed one of the national guard divisions defending the camp. At the moment, we control the southeast half of the area. Bombardment has destroyed their SAM sites, but they have so many fighters in the air that we still can't effectively use air power here."
"What assets do you currently have?"
"We have one intact infantry division and an intact tank division, half a helicopter group, and a heavily damaged tank division, most of which are low on ammo and fuel."
Peter nodded. It was better than he'd been expecting. "We have another infantry divisions and a black ops group within range of you; they'll be moving up to support you by the end of the day. When they arrive, you will launch an immediate attack to take the camp."
"With respect sir, we will experience heavy casualties if we do that. The Schripians have booby trapped the entire place, and are fighting tooth and nail to kill as many of us as they can before we kill them. We'll probably lose at least two more divisions if we were to attack now."
"Captain, we need to take this camp now. The Erebians are being routed in the north, with only the Tannhauser Gate preventing the Iustitians from completely breaking through. We need to finish up our operations here and begin moving soldiers north as quickly as possible, or we are going to lose this war."
The captain saluted. "It will be done, sir."

Imperial Square, Austin, Omegia

"... and with this glorious new energy powering our industries, soon the world shall tremble at our might! Rule Omegia!"
Emperor Sean stepped away from the podium as applause and responding calls of "Rule Omegia!" went out. A black limo was waiting for him away from the square; the door was held open for him by a heavily armed man in a military uniform. Coeus was waiting inside the limo, still wearing his white lab coat.
"Impressive speech, my lord." He said to Sean as the emperor sat down.
"Yes, it was, wasn't it? Shame the readers didn't get to see it."
Coeus let that nonsensical remark pass uncommented. "My lord, while I know better than anyone the potential benefits of harnessing Gaia for energy production, is it really wise to put so much emphasis on something we have so little understanding of? The seemingly unlimited amounts of energy we can create for free from these stones is blatantly in breach of the laws of thermodynamics, and we still have no fully documented all the effects Gaia seems to have on its surroundings. Have you read the reports from the crews we sent to the main crater site?"
"Of course."
"And yet you still aren't worried at all? We've already had 4 cases of suicide there in just the few days since moving into it. Men have reported hearing strange noises, or of hallways leading to completely different parts of the facility than they should. We've had trouble with the time there; sometimes they claim that their clocks put them a few hours behind us, other times a few hours ahead. We received a report from them where they claimed they could see the sun setting, despite the fact that it was only mid-day for us. And our electronics technology acts strangely in the area. More than once we've been completely cut off from them for hours at a time. And despite all of this, you intend to not only mine large areas of Gaia, but also use this unstable energy we know next to nothing about to power our cities?"
Sean thought for a moment. "Yes, I think that would describe my plan very succinctly."
Coeus let his jaw drop, and held it in silence, hoping for some other response from the Emperor. When it didn't come, he sighed. "Very well, my lord. I suppose you want me to continue to research Gaia, so that we don't accidentally kill us all by tampering with it?"
"Of course. Now, if you'll excuse me, this would be my stop."
Coeus looked out the window. "My lord, we are still a block away from the palace."
Sean patted him on the shoulder. "I'll walk the rest of the way. Healthy exercise, fresh air, and all that good stuff. You really should try it sometime." He motioned for the driver to stop, and got out of the car, followed by a military man. As the Emperor got out, the limo began to move forward again, leaving Coeus in the back to ponder his disquieting thoughts about the future.

Counterattack

Mephi, Omegia

gaiacore.jpg

"....and in other news, the city of Mephi has constructed what they are calling a 'Gaia Core', a large powerplant which uses the recently discovered Gaia energy to produce vast amounts of power. Proponents of the Gaia Core claim that it will be able to produce energy for every Omegian city on the continent, with very little cost. Preliminary work on constructing the Core was ordered by Emperor Sean several weeks before the public announcement of Gaia energy. Back to the war, Iustitian forces continue to attack the Erebian Tannhauser Gate line...."

Outskirts of Arigos, Arigos League

This was the third invasion of Arigos that Pwnzoria had attempted. While the first two had minimal success, this attempt had the makings to work. The Omegian navy was moving in on the city, and would soon be in range for bombardment, and the Pwnzorian ground forces were large enough to take care of most resistance after it had been softened up. The invasion consisted of a cavalry army, a division of colonial infantry, and a 9001 tank division.

The battle began during the night, as Arigosian laser artillery opened fire on the Pwnzorian positions. The bombardment tore through the Pwnzorians, destroying most of their cavalry army and hundreds of tanks and soldiers. With their enemy in disarray, the Arigosian soldiers moved in.

The Arigosian's prototype infantry battle armor had been rushed into production at blinding speed since its invention a week ago. They certainly proved their worth on the battlefield. Prince Arigo's royal guard, equipped with the new suits, attacked the Pwnzorian invaders. It was a massacre; the Pwnzorian's bullets just ricocheted off the armor, and the 9001 tanks were shot full of holes by the massive guns carried by the royal guard. The cavalry army attempted to recover the situation, using anti-tank weapons and mortars to actually damage the Arigosians, but it was too late to win the battle. The entire Pwnzorian invasion force was wiped out.

I imagine they all died shouting "AGGRO!!". :)

Either that or: "WTFBBQ?!! OMG, TOHSE GUYZ R USIN A AIMBOT!!! F***ING WALLHAXXORS!!!!!111111shiftone"

The latter seems more likely.

With most of the islands taken, there's going to be a lot of turns of stalemate now. I could theoretically build a gigantic stack of 70+ laser artillery, blast through the enemy lines, and blitz their cities, but that would end the game much too early, and I'm trying to show off everything in it. And also I already blew most of my treasury rushing infrastructure in my cities. Bloody building contractors, you'd think they'd give their supreme ruler a discount....;)

Thanks to my obsessive working on both this and the Playground Mod since break's started, I've actually finished the scenario! (Hooray![party])

Ta Da!

I'll still be writing this story, though. Hopefully it will buy me some more publicity.;)

Psst. If you want publicity, link the story in your sig. ;)

Well, I didn't realize you had this until you linked it. And I was semi-active during the summer on CFC, so it's not like I was lazy and didn't peek around.

But yeah, now that it's said and done with, it makes little difference.

At first I thought this would be some lame anime crap when I saw the leaders and stories...

Then I played it :) and it was still anime crap but EXTREMELY fun anime crap I cant stop playing as Lustaria or whatever and I am rolling with this: Send in Spec Ops, capture worker, build airfield, steam roll in a ton of tanks and infantry supported by carrier groups.

Anybody wanna do multiplayer, I'd kill to have an effective ally or even a clever enemy to counter my special forces teams :P

Edit:

Armored forces need to balanced, infantry destroy and defend against them like they are fighting spearmen. Erebian miltiary units overpowered in general, just watched an elite tank at full health get killed by a one health tank which and killed one of my infiltrators.

it was defending.

And again I lost another tank, I'm playing on the third difficulty level.

And again. Seriously these infantry men are killing my tanks and spec ops guys with bolt action rifles

Edit again:

This is getting outrageous.

16 strat bombers destroyed by AA and interceptors in my turn.

with five automated sams protecting my units all 23 B-1s were able to decimate the tank battalion I was sending in.

Defender's getting owned by Erebian troopers.

Omegian tank at 1 health killing three, three of my tanks. I'm not playing this scenario for a few days.

Not sure what to say about losing so many units to the Erebians like that; stat-wise, their units should be weaker than the Iustitians. It's likely a combination of the Random Number Generator just deciding to hate you for a while (it does that from time to time.... Just look at what happened to my air force early on in the story....), and defensive bonuses (Most of the Iustitian/Erebian border is hills or mountains, so all defending units get a 50-100% defensive bonus for fighting on that terrain) If you want to avoid results like that, I'd recommend lots and lots of artillery, though even then, there's still the chances of getting legions of troops slaughtered by a 1 hp infantry soldier (I know, it's happened to me). Best bet is to just play it out, use artillery to put the odds more into your favor, and hope the RNG doesn't keep messing with you.

As for the air force, bombing cities will result in many casualties. The AI tends to put Automated SAMS and fighters in their cities, along with building SAM sites and Automated Defense systems, which means there is a very high chance of losing planes whenever they do a bombing run on the city. If you really want to bomb that city, best way to counter is to first have fighters go over the city, so that there's a better chance of them shooting down any interceptors, and then using so many bombers that they can't shoot them all down. I tend to just use bombers to hit stacks of units outside cities (much lower casualty rates), and then use artillery on the cities.

To deal with pesky AA:

MOAR DAKA! Sometimes I bomb their cities for the explicit purpose of killing their interceptors, for aircraft are the first units that get hit when bombing.

It works well if you can out produce them... :p

I have been doing ALL that and more

Oh decided to play a little more, my defender army+tank company that was protecting my 14 laser arties died.

Pwnzoria is now the proud owner of that firepower..... -__-

I out produce everyone I think but this becomin like Nam, I send in twenty tanks to kill one conscript then an omegian police unit murders me

@CaptainEthan: Please be more respectful... Some of us LIKE that "anime crap" and find your comments to be highly offensive.... Just FYI...

Who do you think made the LH graphics used in this mod?

YOU might want to think before you post general sweeping terms like that, too.....

I'm sorry I jumped on you like that, but I've had my works derided as "anime crap" before and been told that I should do "real graphics" and add to that the fact that SOMEONE decided to rate every leader graphic I ever made with a 1-star rating and you can see where I might be a little paranoid.... (it wouldn't have pissed me off so much if the jackass had actually posted some kind of comments as to how I could improve them or what he/she/it didn't like about them....)

Furthermore, how would YOU like it if I said, "Oh, I just thought this was some kind of stupid DOW crap, but it turned out to be fun DOW crap..." Seriously, that sounds pretty insulting, particularly if you're a fan of that game/genre, and I'm a HUGE anime fan, so YOU might want to learn to be more respectful of those who don't share your taste (or lack thereof) in art...

Add to that fact that I've been having a bad day month year, and you can see where I might have gotten a bit touchy....

Both of you calm down.

It's the arbitrary New Year, go relax and have fun away from the computer (or at least CFC) for a few days, and then come back after you are nice and refreshed.

And on a random note, CaptainEthan, technically this is the stories and tales thread; scenario complaints go into the scenario thread. :)

Looks like you've got an interesting story going here, Omega. I'll have to check out more than just part of the first story post someday.

@CaptainEthan: That's how it always starts. We try to soften up the doubters with something cheesy yet vaguely interesting, and before you know it you have a million figurines on a shelf in your room, and you're driving a Toyota to work (true story, that last bit).

It's too late for you. You have no chance to survive; make your time.

[/humor mode]

BTW, enjoy the links :)
