The Gang of Four - FRFR Redux

Got it.

Island Reporter due in mail tomorrow.

500
Raise the lux tax and fiddle with specialists to get Engineering in 12 and reduce the cash burn.

Can't trade with anyone because of Chinese war.

Our military ranks strong against all.

Xerxes will offer 74g for Feudalism.
Cleopatra will pay 45g for Feudalism or Monotheism.
The Netherlands are broke.
Gandhi will pay 37g for Monotheism or Feudalism.
Mao gets really angry when I ask him for a city.
Henry has nothing to offer for Monotheism.

Looks like we no longer hold the monopoly on Feudalism or Monotheism but nobody can offer anywhere near 2nd or 3rd price.

Looks like Tsingtao and Chengdu are next on the list for capture.

Chinese swords attack our MDI in the south and although he promotes on the first attack, the second finishes him off. A Chinese sword also kills an archer in front of Tsingtao and one city defender is now crippled and in the open:hehe:

The people admire us so much we get a veranda for the cave.

Arbela completes the SoZ.

T1 510
A vainglorious, marshal's baton seeking warrior attacks the exposed Chinese swordsman, whips him in one but doesn't promote. No promotions for killing cripples.

Cats bombard Tsingtao and expose only two defenders and deal casulaties to both. A baton hunting archer nocks an arrow and..a spear dies dealing no casualties. A medal hunting archer fails to win his cross and the spear is decorated for valor. A third archer takes the village and a slave.

At Chengdu an archer opens the ball and gets his decoration for a flawless performance as Spearkiller. An MDI cuts in, wipes out the last defender and also wins a decoration.

The citories bring the Treaury into the black so research gets turned up to bring in Engineering in 8 at a net loss of 8g.

So far, so excellent

Mao is now doubtful on giving up Shanghai and is considering giving up Nanking but not Xinjan.

T2 520
Advance continues along both coasts. A sword and pike load into galleys to provide advance pillaging in the west.

Feudalism is only worth ~150g from everybody. Let it ride a little longer and hope Henry doesn't get greedy. If he does we can proably take it back from him for Monotheism.

The Babylonians learn Feudalism and start SunT. Should have taken the 100g when I had the chance as Hammi is now broke, though I can't figure out where he spent the money as Henry is still broke.

T3 530
Advancing slowly, oh so slowly.

T4 440
Slowly, oh so slowly.

A single Chinese sword threatens our advance on Nanking.

Three Chinese swords (one from the open, two from XInjan) attack the Nanking advance and are eliminated while crippling our sword. The defense at Xinjan should be stripped and our archer gets a decoration.

T5 550
The Nanking force halts in the open to heal up and await the events at Xinjan.

As the Xinjan assault now consists of nine units of various types (including two elite units, 1 archer and and MDI), and there are no reinforcements visible I don't think the city will hold out beyond 560.

A Chinese sword attacks the resting troops and kills an archer.

T6 560
An elite archer takes the Chinese sword out and is covered by an injured sword. A couple of cats, an archer and a warrior join the train. The battle reveals the extensive raod net connecting Nanking and Xinjan.

Battle for Xinjan
An elite archer attacks first, kills a defending spear but doesn't win a baton. An elite MDI finishes the defense and the village is ours, but still no batons are handed out.

Troops from the Xinjan assault move onto boats for a ferry trip to the choke point south of Nanking.

War weariness causes riots in Bergen and Rekyjavik and Oslo as we lose an archer to a Chinese sword on the road to Nanking.

As soon as Engineering comes in we will revolt to Feudalism as keeping the cities quiet has led to the hiring of lots of clowns

T7 570

Lose a sword in a fruitless attack on crippled Chinese sword. Troops in Xinjan destroy roads.

Chinese swords counter attack at Xinjan and kill our exposed troops :splat:

T8 580
Garrison troops at Xinjan wipe out China's counter.
Cats bombard sword threatening the advance on Nanking, wound the sword, an elite archer takes him out. Bede's Bows are christened and Healfdene is born. :dance:

Healfdene heads north to form an army in Hangchow.

Everybody in the world is still broke and Henry got to Enginnering the same time we did.

Start the long glissade into Feudalism (eight turns, sorry, Strider)

No sign of a Chinese counterattack

T9 590
Four units seize the landbridge.
The others form up for the assault on Nanking while the useless cats try to destroy improvements. A galley heads back to Chengdu to pick up the new army with a single MDI.

Trondheim starves.

Egypt starts SunT's.

T10
Assembling at Nanking.

An MDI tries the defenses at Shanghai and kills a spear. A second MDI kills a spear and is decorated for valor.

The Sino-Viking war is moving ahead. We have control of the choke point and Shanghai appears vulnerable. The northern forces are assembling at Nanking but still lack offensive punch, As soon as the army gets there I would add in a couple of Archers or an archer and a pike for defense and go for it. I think we have chewed up the last of China's swords (cross fingers)

I'm afraid I was asleep at the switch and hadn't positioned the workers to plant trees at Rekjavik once Engineering came in. They are on their way now.

File #34061: Destruction of China

That was fast. I've got it. A post by late morning Pacific Time. Stand by Stapel :D

Well done, Strider.

Finish 'em off, Bugs.

It looks like I am the only one without some fighting with the Chinese :( .

Though I am standing by, I lack internet at home, due to a server crash. Not the server itself, but the video card went down. It shouldn't take too long to fix it, but you never know.

If Bugs is fast, I can download it at the office and put it on a 3.5" thingy.

Sorry this took so long to post. Real Life reared its ugly head. Our home internet line was tied up with the daughter researching Pol Pot of all people :rolleyes:

Pre-flight – 700 AD – Switch Nanking to a harbor and whip it.

The Chinese are down to two cities. Fabulous job gents!

We’ll need to rearrange Shanghai. We need a city on the gems and one on the chokepoint to be a canal.

We have no defense. As soon as the war is over, we need some defense. It isn’t like we can get someone to defend somewhere in a hurry.

Pillage some ugly roads. Cats are nice like that.

Tsingtao is in a bad spot too. Should be one tile south on the horse.

IBT – Hammi demands Literature. Given the fact that we have no defense in most of our cities, I fold.
Nanking: Harbor=>
Birka: spear=>spear
Molde: Harbor=> Spear

1. 710 AD - @ Beijing: 4/4 archer kills 3/3 sword (redlined)
5/5 Med Inf kills 2/3 Sword Beijing falls. Five resisters. I will whip a settler and abandon the city as soon as possible.

Iron is back on line.

Trade Hammi Engineering for Dyes.

Cleo gives us 7G, Incense & Wines for Engineering.

Much MM.

IBT – Bergen: Archer=> Pike

2. 720 AD – Much pillaging and some slow movement.

IBT – Babs start Knights Templar

3. 730 AD – Whip a settler in Beijing.
Cats are nice for pillaging.
Copenhagen now has a forest. It is starting to be productive at 3 spt. :rolleyes:

IBT – Beijing is abandoned in producing a settler.
Oslo: Pike=> Pike

4. 740 AD - @ Canton: The Abbott’s Boys take out two spears while redlining and the fledgling Chinese are destroyed. [dance]

More MM with the coming of peace.

IBT – Birka: Spear=>Pike
Stavanger: settler=> Spear
The Palace gets an East wing.
The Indians are building Sun Tsu’s

5. 750 AD – Found Bodo on Gems. Start harbor of course.

IBT – Trondheim: Market=>Pike
Odense: Pike=> Pike
Hareid: Harbor=>Barracks
Persians are building Knights Templar

6. 760 AD – Pillage improvements.
7. 770 AD – Pillage and move.
8. 780 AD – Henry has invention, but won’t sell even though we are only five turns from discovering it.

IBT – Tientsin: Harbor=>Barracks

9. 790 AD - :sleep:

IBT – Bergen: Pike=> Archer
Alesund: Harbor=> Barracks
Indians start Knights Templar
Egyptians start Sistine Chapel

10. 800 AD – Invention is due next turn, science slider goes to 10%.
Found Karasjok on the Horses to the south. Start harbor.

After Action Report: Canton, Tsingtao and Shanghai need to be abandoned and moved. Canton can be whip when it has 20 shields in the box. That will drop it to pop 2 and the city can be abandoned when the settler is produced. Tsingtao is presently at pop 1. I was going to merge a slave into the city to make it pop2 and then abandon it. Shanghai is a very unhappy place. There is a very unhappy place. There is a slave to merge in when it comes time to produce a settler.

There are a total of four tiles left to pillage.

I don’t think we want to forest every tile. Probably want to do a checkerboard type pattern so fast movers can move two or three tiles.

Next post will have the forest record. I think it is accurate.

Good luck Stapel!

I was up just before in 2 other SGs... One of them being a 31 civ huge map, consuming quite some minutes on the interturn. I won't play this one before wedness day evening, so I's better change with Gengis.

Ok?

Right then. Roster Check

Gengis - UP
Stapel - On Deck
Bede
Strider
Bugs - Still stuck with explaining the Cambodian Civil War :rolleyes:

Looking good guys! Got it.

Flight Check: The continent sure looks better without all those pesky Chinese running around.
MM our cities & change a few builds.
Stop the 2 slaves that are planning outside Trondheim & move them next to the river.
Switch like 4 galleys into the build.
Change lux from 20% to 0.

IT- Learn Invention. Trade Inv for Chiv & 7g with Hammi. Start on Gunpowder with a single scientist.

1- Not much, bringing some vet archers back to our core for upgrade.
We have 59 turns left on Leo’s, which means we won’t get it & if we did we’d have long ago upgraded all our archers to Zerks. I switch it to Knight’s Templar.

IT- Persian galley is sailing along our coast, looks like an AI sneak attack.

2- :sleep:

IT- Persian galley keeps going, he’s headed for the unsettled island to our left.

3- Upgrade a Elite* arch to Zerk for 150g.:eek:

4- Start shipping pikes down to our southern cities.

5- Start mixing a worker or two into our builds

6- Everyone except Gandhi has Theology, however I’m waiting till he gets it cause he’s still down invention.

7- Xerxes demands 25g & I cave.

8- Keep shuttling troops.

9- :sleep:

10- Settler in place to refound Whatchamacallit on top of the iron.

**End o Turn Report**
*Since I normally write a 15 page report, you guys will have to forgive my brief one today. It’s been a super busy day.
*Gandhi still doesn’t have Inv or Theology.
I’ve been stacking our extra Zerks & Trebs in the bridge between the N & S parts of our continent, this is a centralized location where they’ll be ready to mount an attack on anyone once we get a few more in place.
*Zerks are freaking EXPENSIVE!! Especially when producing 5spt.
*Tsingtoa & Shanghi are both set on settlers, it’s up to you whether you’d rather wait the 20+ turns it will take for them to grow or just bring a settler from a core town. I’d go with the latter, both cities need to be moved 1 tile south.
*Knights due in 7 if we’re lucky.
*I’ve been blowing pretty much all our money every turn on archer, cat, & spear upgrades.
*I havn’t chopped a forest yet, but the NE tile of Birka will be the first.
*I’d also recommend some workers & settlers getting produced asap. We currently have the budget for 100+ more units without going over our cap so we’re good to go & need workers for foresting operations.

Good luck!

Edit - Did you guys see that Charis has started plying the original FRFR? It will be interesting to see how we can compare.

Got it, will play friday.

Zerks are expensive, but imho, the single most powerful unit in civ.
Any chance on Leonardo's?

Not a prayer, even if we did get it Zerks would be long obsolete.

Hi guys! Thanks Bugsy for the kind words... I'm looking forward to how FRFR turns out myself. I feel kind of attached to that Indian nation. What victory goal(s) are you going for anyway? I was surprised to see two nearly empty decent sized islands to your south.

Playing Vikings you guys have an interesting opportunity here. You guys have no doubt noticed that you're hurting for 2 things -
i) shield production, and
ii) movement across land in attacking and responding to attacks

The Berzerker has the unique opportunity to attack from the sea, moving at a fairly brisk pace in doing so, and immune to counterattacks. That in combination with the huge number of coastal cities here suggests at least as an option a huge zerk offensive before rifles get here. Hopefully your GA combined with good cash for upgrades (you did make a ton of archers, right? or no?) might give you enough production to pull it off. If you can do nothing else but raze the capitals or top few cores citeis of a couple of opposing rivals, it would be a nice coup. Unlike with any other unit, you can surprise attack - declare war outside his territory but in the same turn, have a dozen screaming Berkzerer units descend on their finest domestic cities and leave them crying in the streets! :help:

Regarding Leo's or other wonders... with Zerks, who on earth said you have to *build* a wonder to *own* it?! :groucho:

Just a thought :P Good luck guys! :hammer:
Charis

I like your approach, Charis. It takes advantage of our strengths and mitigates our weaknesses.

I think the intention in these last rounds was to secure the home island before venturing further afield as the home island held needed resources and trade goods that didn't involve sea travel.

Now's a good time to start colonizing to our south.

That is possibly the most brilliant statement ever! I can't beleive that didn't even cross my mind.

To answer your questions: We just took out the Chinese, and are still repositioning cities on our home continent. Hence us not being able to strike far out into the Ocean for new territory, it's definatly #1 on my "to do list" though.

We have probably 20+ archers still able to be upgraded, unfortunatly upgrading an archer to a Zerk costs 150g.

Also unfortunatly we'll need a wave of galleys to transport our horde, I think we should make whatever city controls the Great Light our first attack, then after controlling that launch attacks on everyone else we can. We'll also want to get the Library before we hit Education. We're gonna need like 60 galleys for this though. :lol:

Thanks for the tips! Feel free to chime in anytime, you are the expert after all.

It is so nice getting input from fellow regent players. Thanks, for your input Charis
