Sunday evening, Jacques Chirac, the French president, declared he would not run for the next presidential election.
Out of curiosity:
Did the news speak about it in your country, and what did they comment?

I've not seen the news on TV and there wasn't a mention on the Radio. It's been reported in the serious newspapers. There'll probably be some xenophobic rant in The Sun too.

I'm glad he's gone simply because I'd rather sleep with Mme Royal than Msr. Chirac, I never liked his employment reforms ;)

He stopped Le Pen from becoming president in 2002. Just for that I think France and Europe owes him a big thank you.
You know, it's the French people who voted 82% against Le Pen. Chirac didn't do much to stop him.

I heard about it on the radio here in the US, but I was listening to the BBC, so I guess it doesnt count. So long Chirac, make way for Napoleon Sarkozy.

I heard it on the news over the weekend. They didn't really comment on it, they just stated it matter-of-factly.

STT (if I remeber correctly) said that it wasn't any news. Helsingin Sanomat wrote that Chirac said that he stands behind the things he have done, and tried to serve France as good as he could. Much of the news was about Sarkozy, if Chirac supports him and the differences in their politics. Oh, and there was about Chirac opposing Le Pen &co and neoliberalism.

What particular aspect about the news you're interested?

A majority of American people do not know who Chirac is.I can garantee that.

Until I started learning more about him here from the French posters, I always got him mixed up with this guy:

I was surprised when I saw this in the news - I somehow thought that it already been announced previously

I'm not interested in something specific, just wanted to know if this kind of info was reported outside of France
Like others, I already had the impression that Chirac wasn't going to 'run'.

same here, I thought he'd said it earlier already, so I wasn't surprised when I saw him announce it in the news last night ...

btw, I a few months back my local paper ran an article on Ségolène Royal. what are the resident frenchmen's views on her chances of actually getting in?
