Presenting a world...

It looks and sounds like our world, but is it really? We can see the Americas to the west and the bulk of Eurasia to the east. The multitude of creatures are definitely the twins of those which inhabit our zoos. Even the people are indubitably our brothers and sisters. And yet, presenting a world...

The lengthy progress of nature pales to the rapid and abounding achievements of civilization. Civilized man shapes nature and his surronds to reflect himself. Through this process, mankind provides itself with its own theater of tragedies and golden ages. Even more potent than the forces unleashed upon nature by man is the forces man releases upon himself. In the following pages of a history there will be glorious triumphs. Great rulers will stride across a continent as though they were walking across a narrow street and the sun will never set on their empires. Until it does.

With the dropping of the sun comes chaos. The darkest times always emerge upon the fall of an empire. The world shudders and trembles and gives a great groan as the old order of society collapses. Cities burn and tyrants rise, religions preach the end of times. For those who live in this nightmare, dawn never comes. Until it does.

"All the world's a stage." Come then one and all and view the greatest show ever played. Be fascinated by civilization's rise. Be astounded by the magnificent wonders of the civilized world. Be shocked by the triumphant marches of armies. Be awed by the glamor of the gold of empires. Be terrorified by the horrors of the plague. Be saddened by the tragedy of the fall of nations.

And then there was light...

Rules

Sample Stats

Viking Empire: EQandCivfanatic
Era: Stone Age
Government: Despotism
Religion: Paganism
Economy: Stable
Army: Palace Guard Stone Age
Navy: none

Era

This is the general technology of your nation, and is often reflected by your neighbors. For now all that is available is Stone Age technology. Copper Age is the next level and upon its development several new options will be available for your spending.

Government

You may choose any time of time-period related government that you'd like, government changes must be justified by a story of some sort.

Religion

You may have any type of religion that you'd like, however, if you are creating a new religion you must once more have a story behind it. The exception to this rule is that you can convert to an existing religion without a story. The default religion is Paganism.

Economy

This is how you pay for stuff and build your nation up. To increase economy all you have to do is nothing. Quite likely this will be changed later on in the NES. You can either bank your economy, build up 1 particular stat (such as +1 Army level) or lose an economy level to gain two levels elsewhere (such as +2 Army levels)

Economy levels:

Chaos-Depression-Recession-Declined-Stable-Developing-Growing-Prosperous-Booming

Military

Army and navies are used to fight wars. About military campaigns: As a hint plot out your whole war in the orders you send, not tactically, after all these first few years will just fly by. Costs for building up military is above in economy section. As of the Copper Age, military training will also become available. Military upgrades can be done for free with the expense of losing one army size level.

Military sizes:

palace guard-miniscule-tiny-small-medium-large-very large-huge-gigantic

Wonders

Wonders can be built in the Copper Age (not long from the start I promise). To build wonders you must merely tell a story about the wonder, describe it and name it. From that I will judge what stats it will improve and by how much. There is no build time, but there is a limit of 1 wonder per civilization per age.

Stories

Stories ARE required for several things, though you can still be here without them. Wonders, government development, and new religions all need stories. Stories can be written in any type of format you feel comfortable with, history book or artistically, or any other style you can imagine. All stories will be compiled in another thread for the benefit of other readers.

Orders

These can be in threads or by PM, thread is preferred since we want people to learn from ancient experience after all ;) . These can be done in any fashion, just I'd recommend saving your best writing for the thread itself.

Expansion

Quite simply you can only expand in one way at a time. You can say expand east, west, north, or south or you can colonize an island. Just remember: only one way at a time.

One final note, please post nation stats, governments and religions now. If you want to create a government or religion now would be the time to write that story.

IC:

Ignacius surveyed the lands around him. Dawn rose. He gave his thanks to Ra and Helios (Relios?) for the warming gift on his kingdom.

It had been generations since his ancestors had arrived from Greece in the west. They had built a colony in the north. The Egyptians had built theirs in the south.

He remembered his grandfather's tale of how the two had fought. It had been long and difficult, and neither side had won. But it had brought about the way to unity and peace. After a generation of fighting, the two sides realized that their path would only lead them to destruction. Barbarians, pirates, and other outside forces would destroy them.

So the Peace of Nicosia was made between the two forces. The two leaders joined their nations together and made amends.

The power of the combined Cypriots drove off the pirates and defeated the barbarians.

Now, thought Ignacius, is time to look beyond our island...

A nation is born.

How about Cypriot Polytheism instead?

Mick Rising

Seán McChip looked over this little village. The sheep, herded by his people, baahhhed and munched on the lush green grass that crunched below his feet. His leather shoes, made from the hide of a now-departed cow, were dampened from the morning dew. Resting on his wooden staff, he surveyed the country side of beautiful Dublin.

An ordinary observor would see thatched roof huts in a odd arrangement around grazing fields for Cows and Sheep, and planted fields full of cereals such as Hops, Barley, and Yeast. They were used to brew the FANTASTIC beer of the village.

They would have seen the River Poddle intersect with the Liffey, and they could have followed the Liffey's path to the aptly named Irish Sea. On the coast were small wooden docks that led to small wooden Fishing boats that provided the Village with another source of food. Dublin had a good deal of Fisherman among its mix, and Sean was glad of it. They would see the Wicklow Mountains to the south, and perhaps even catch a glance of Lugnaquilla rising through the fog to touch the sky.

But that was what an ordinary person would see, and Sean McChip was no ordinary person. He was a visionary. What he saw when he looked at Dublin was potential. What he saw were a determined, loyal, superior people. What he saw was not a collection of huts, not a quaint village, but a grand city. When Sean looked to the fields, and the Bay, and the Mountains, the Rivers and the huts, he saw not an settlement, he saw the roots of an Empire!

Sean could feel it in his very bones as he surveyed his domain. He could see it in the very eye's of the Irish People, he could hear the breeze whisper these futures into his ears, he could smell it in the crisp morning air. And most importantly, he could taste it in the very earth, a tantalizing morsel of a feast greater than his wildest dreams.

Sean McChip stood straight and switched his wooden staff to his left hand. He reached out and pulled a stone axe, lashed to a firm wooden handle, out of the tree he had placed it in. Enough dreaming for today, he had to get back to the here and now. He had to train the overactive Adolescents who called themselves his Palace Guards.

Under the supple teen flesh and developing bodies, their teeming muscles and glistening exterior, lay the future of the Irish People. Their blood, and the blood of their son's and grandson's would forge the Irish destiny, empire, and dream. This made Sean remember not to be too hard on them when training them for war, he didn't want an impotent future.

"Line up boys, its time to make you men. And its time to make Dublin, and Ireland, Great"

Gesmond squinted in the dawn's early sun. The morning dew had already conquered the stone steps outside leading down from the wooden door and onto the reddish dirt that carpets the town. Wearing only hide leggings that stopped at the knees, Gesmond knew that today would be another one of the Sun God's blessed. Sucking in the sweet air, the young man made his way down the steps and to the temple at the center of the huts and shops. The pendent he wore around his neck gave him easy clearance into the temple, and from there Gesmond made his way to the center where the priest was busy cleaning up the spillings from the mornings sacrifice. The old man wore a white garment that covered his entire body, from neck to foot, and he wore a simple crown of twigs and bones. His eyes were deeply sunken in, typical of a Sun God priest, and his body was a towering five foot six. Nodding in Gesmond's direction, the priest returned to his work of rinsing the sacrificial stone with blessed water from the nearby stream. He would soon retire to his quarters above the chamber, but for now Gesmond traveled down. A small tunnel, big enough for Gesmond only when he crawled, led from the back of the circular chamber and down to the original temple, that which was built hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago by the first Valencian settlers. It was there that Gesmond would continue with his excavations and deciphering of the pictographs that covered the ancient stone and recording his assumptions on the outstretched hide with his dark piece of coal.

The tunnel was unusually damp this morning, one of the damn priestess whores most likely left the temple open durning the night, Gesmond thought to himself. It was bad enough that the King had ordered the creation of a priestess sect, but for the women to be in charge of the night maintanaince...it was foolery. The tunnel made its way downwards, under the heavy, thick stone that served as the floor of the modern temple. It finally opened up to a five and a half foot tall room, just tall enough for Gesmond to stand up in. Taking a torch he had in his belt, Gesmond lit it from the continued fire he kept from last night, and began to light the set torches he had placed previously. The room was finally lit when Gesmond returned to the wall at the far eastern end. Here he had left off last, deciphering the dozens of feet of pictures and ancient text that only marginally resembeled the modern writing of today's Valencia. Starting from the top right, Gesmond began to review what he had read last time.

The pictures showed what Gesmond supposed were a group of Valencians who were traveling from the uncharted southwest. One man who stood in front of them all beared the Valencian name Handone, denoted by the two symbols above his head. Following the pictograms left, it showed the clan fending off wild animals of all sorts and various numbers of heads. Finally, the clan had come upon what looked to be the three hills that surrounded the town of Valencia. But what seemed odd to Gesmond was the presence of two different clans in the same picture. It seemed that either the clan had split or multiplied, or that there had already been a people here in the valley. Common mythology says that the wandering Valencians had finally found the promised land that the Gods had chosen for them, a fertile valley sounded by three hills and overlooking an endless sea of blue. Nothing was ever said about native inhabitants.

Gesmond decided to stop here, and instead head over to the west wall, where records were kept by the Sun Priest, who had supposedly been one of the founding members of the town. A quick look at the beginning of the record showed a spear, and what looked to be like something dripping from the end, whether it was blood Gesmond could not be so sure. Quickly Gesmond sketched the spear onto his stretched hide, and continued to study. The next pictogram showed what looked to be the founding of Valencia, with small huts in the picture, surrounded by three hills. Gesmond could not understand what the significance of the dripping spear. Looking harder at the town, though, revealed what looked to be small sketches swurving from the hut upwards. Gesmond took his fine brush and began to sweep away the dirt that caked the stone. Slowly but surely the falling dirt revealed flames above the town. Together with the bloody spear and the pictogram on the east wall, Gesmond was almost certain. Valencia had been founded on a field of blood. The natives here were killed, their town stolen, their people banished. The next picture showed a Valencian city and what appeared to be a clan outside, crossing the hills, and very faint letters that spelt what Gesmond found to be disturbing. Revenge Will Come.
