The ICS Experiment informal thread

just dont see how the lux bonus of arabia is any useful if u r wide and flooded with multiples of lux anyway and proly at war a lot and not even trading
and the camel archer? not like xbows dont do the job same good

the lux bonus is less useful since it requires bazaars but the trade route bonus is much better now that AI is always broke. and wide really needs the gold machine to support itself.

I've played maybe 10 tries with Egypt on Emperor and Im kind of bummed about the War Chariot. Its nice to not need horses for them, as many of my games didnt have any in my first 3 cities, but even with 1 less range strength than Comp Bows they seem even weaker. If i buy archers and upgrade to comps the total cost is 280g vs 260g for War Chariots. (ToA and stables do stack for fast war chariot build times though. It helped by 1 turn faster in the one game i built ToA.)

In the games where I went comp bows I fared much better because they become Xbows. The war chariot has such a limited window of usefulness that they arent worth it in bulk numbers. Only 2 or 3 at most is all thats useful long term. And Burial Tombs are nice for ICS because in most games I didnt get Pagodas (1st or 2nd religion always took them) so their happ really helped. I also took the temple side of Piety, mostly because I rarely play with a temple UB.

They will be nice for this challenge but not as nice as I hoped. I wish WC's were better than that.

Yeah, the upgrade path is the killer. I do find them to be invaluable in very specific encounters. Namely, when going wide you tend to piss off all your neighbors, and there are times when you have to juggle units from one side of your empire to the other, depending on the current war.

It is largely dependent on the map, and like you said, such a small window. Do they still upgrade into knights? May be possible to use them as replacement for CB's, then transition into a strong trebuchet/cannon machine with knight support later on.

im in another test game that is going poorly. wasnt aggressive early enough, didnt get a good science machine going but ive got happiness taken care of. i actually had room to settle 15 cities without really needing to go to war. i have two really easy caps around me that im saving for later but hiawatha is a runaway on emperor. didnt really plan for that. im 2nd in pts with 860 and hes first with 1400+. his military dwarfs mine in number and tech. i can finish everyone else but it'll take air units to get to him. there are at least 8 cities in a direct line to his cap which isnt on a coast, so no sea units to surprise him with.

i did build 2 WCs and i upgraded them to knights so they could take cities. i pretty much only use horses for sniping cities or finishing off very low health units. im currently on xbows and muskets and will have gatlings in about 15 turns. i will have a hard time beating hiawatha before t300. sad, sad, sad....

edit. ehh, i just quit it. i lost 3 gatlings to 4 frigates in a decent sized lake that couldnt go anywhere else. stupid AI will build a fleet in a freaking lake. aztecs cap had 4 spaces for frigates to sit by and protect. they were focusing fire and taking one out every turn while i was getting into position.

i think i'll have 2 maps ready to go tomorrow. i made 2, one on Emperor with Egypt and France and the other on Immortal with Arabia and Maya. I just have to test them to see if anything isnt where it should be. I'll start a new thread for this with an intro and explanation.
