The Jena 6

that makes it grievous bodily harm or aggravated battery or whatever, but not attempted murder...
what was that story about the guy spitting on a police officer?
shouldnt murder be an action that leads to someones death thats planned out of base motives and attempted murder the failed plan to do so? how did they prove the guys had planned to actually kill the other? i know nothing about the us legal system, but that's sick...

It was a 6-1 brutal beating. I don't care what was the colour of the participants, they should be punished. Should I forsake my reason just to look PC? I would think exactly the same if it was 6-1 against a black kid, so don't pull a race card on me please.

but is a brutal beating attempted murder? they will be punished with the correct charge, assault and battery.

I agree that the murder charge could be too much, but some pepole want this 6 guys to go free for what they've done. This is too much also.

no one here or with a grasp on reality, or of any clout, is saying they should go free.

I stand my statement that this whole episode is blown way out of proportion.

Sort of. That's one side of the story, but not everyone agrees on those essential details. (All bolding mine)

And according to the New York Times, there's even confusion about how this initial tree incident went down - according to other town residents, it wasn't a "white" tree at all.

Things are not as clear-cut as some in the media have portrayed.

Well, I would have reacted the same way if I saw three nooses, my uncle(actually, great, great uncle) was lynched in New Orleans in the late 1800's after immigrating from Italy. I would have beat the crap out of the kids who did it also. Would I have been right? No, but I really can't blame them.

However, I think the attempted murder charges are a bit too much. Aggravated Assault would be more justified in this situation. What a mess.

Absolutely agree. I think what gets me is the reaction (and overreation) on each side. The kids who put up the nooses (wrong!) get an expulsion, but its downgraded to a 3 day suspension. The kids who beat on that kid (also wrong!) get charged with attempted murder (then just battery for most of them, thank god), which could mean jailtime and a mark on thier record that could follow them for the rest of thier lives. Seems a bit of an overreaction to a schoolyard fight...

If the nooses weren't hanged, no conflict over this would have happened.

You know people keep bring up attempted murder, but he wasn't found guilty of that, he was found guilty of assault. So everyone, including the courts/jury found that silly. And no harm done from it.

He is still guilty of Assault, there is no denying that.

So your reaction to seeing a couple of nooses in a tree (And seeing your fellow students, black and white, playing with them) would be to get a couple of your buddies together and go beat the crap out someone else three months later?

They are just mad that a kid with a criminal history gets to spend extra time with the big boys.

Wait, I was lead to believe that the nooses well put on the tree, and the next day, some black kids beat the crap out of the white kids who did it, right?

No. There were fights and the police were called later this week, but the beating that resulted in attempted murder charges that got everyone riled up, where six blacks beat up one white happened in early December. The nooses were hung sometime in October. And the guy who got beaten up was supposedly beaten up for taunting one of the black kids for getting beaten up the day before for trying to force his way into a party at someone's house - he was not one of the students who hung up the nooses, as far as I can tell.

So the nooses are basically unrelated to the beating. Huh, you see, I could have understand it and even sympathize with those kids if it was directly because of the noose, but if it wasn't, they were completly and utterly wrong.

come on, attempted murder for some bruises resulting out of a school yard fight?

If someone is on the ground and you and your buddies are kicking the crap out of him or her then it can be considered attempted murder and rightfully so. Lots of people have met their maker this way. People just don't realize how easy it is to kill someone like this.
