The lack of a unique model for a unique unit from Great Britain is an embarrassment.

Did they fire all of their artists after launch? Is this why they hired Suk? This is kind of embarrassing.
That's probably it. 2k probably wanted to screw them out of their launch bonuses, so probably fired them 10 months early or whatever the contract is. And they're under hard NDA.

I think this is why there used to be a whole, pretty good UI in the preview videos. There was probably some contract reason why they couldn't use it by firing the person out of their bonus, so they likely hired an outsourcing studio to throw something together at the last minute.

This is viciously conspiratorial and I am enraptured.

I might need a source because I don't remember the UI being good in any preview video.

This is properly the straw that breaks the camels back for me.
Indeed.

It was at least completely different and far more detailed.

So this feels like a fever dream a little, but someone on Reddit found remnants of a different (old?) UI, with all the elements being drastically different. For some reason the devs may have abandoned a n arguably prettier design? I have no clue what is happening. One of the screenshots is from the first gameplay showcase! Why would the devs, instead of tweaking this version, throw it out of the window entirely?????????

We could have had PRETTY CITY BANNERS? I'm going crazy.

This may explain why the UI looks unfinished, that's because someone made a (stupid, in my humble opinion) call to abandon the former project half a year ago, which is not a lot of time to procure something new? I don't understand.

This is a let-down. Not the most glaring issue, but hugely symbolic given much of the game being incomplete.

What I don’t understand is that much care and effort has gone into so many of the visual touches in this game, the few graphical corners Firaxis decided to cut are all the more glaring.

It was bad enough when they reused the Han Great Wall improvement for the Ming. But for the first paid additional content to not have a unique unit is a terrible decision. This decision will have been made a while ago, but the last thing Firaxis needed was a another PR disaster, and they have set one up for themselves within a month…

I think it looks fine?

I’m also a bit disappointed with how Battersea Power Station looks. It’s not terrible, but I don’t think the artist has done a great job of capturing the architecture. I mean, it’s art deco! It is all about elegant, clean lines, even on a utilitarian structure. What we have in-game is just… blocky?

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought this, I just didn't want to voice it.

I think what it needs is some more exaggeration of proportion. Just elongate the towers and add some extra groovy embellishments to communicate "deco."

Of course, I think part of the problem is they seem to use the base architectural assets in designing some of these wonders.

Times like this I wish Steam had more than Positive and Negative review choices because I’m hopelessly addicted to this one and can’t say my personal opinion of the product as a whole is negative but would want to warn others of the massive issues and to wait on purchasing for some time.

This is a big part of what makes this whole situation so painful for me. There's very clearly been a good amount of passion and attention put into the game, myself having seen several examples of specific members of the team being very obviously passionate about what they're doing, such as Mr. Johnson's extensive notes or the one artist who took time outside of work to put together unique buildings for the Maurya. What this reads to me as is the developers having a clear vision, working towards that vision, and then having to scramble to put together something releasable with whatever they've made when the deadline comes knocking. That's not good for the consumer, and it's far from sustainable for the developers, either. Bug fixes and content patches for the base game they couldn't finish in time need to be coming out while they also work on bug fixes and content patches for the DLC they couldn't finish in time and at the same time 2K's already set the date for the next DLC to hit the shelves so they need to be working on that... it all just doesn't fit, especially if the rumors about layoffs are true. I so desperately want them to just pump the breaks on the whole thing, make some statement about how they're reevaluating things, and take a few months to get the game ACTUALLY FINISHED (and maybe toss in that first DLC for free) before starting this whole grand monetization plan that'll get 2K their spare yachts and people who are fans of the creative direction of the game (read: ME) their years of content.

I think they went with a Satanic Mills theme, and adjusted the structure to reflect that era rather than Art Deco. Modern era leans heavily 1890-1910

I had never heard of it before, but apparently this is what the real thing looks like. Much more iconic looking and stands out really nicely.

Well, the thumbs up or down on Steam reviews is whether you would recommend the game, not whether you like it or hate it. I just can't recommend it for the average player. Firaxis has had a month to address the problems, and they've done almost nothing except shovel out unfinished DLC.

Can someone please explain to me how these released a civ without the model being completed ?
Presumably they thought they could get away with it.

That is literally what the Battersea looks like. Ya'll complaining about nothing there.

I do agree, the UU model is disappointing.
It doesn't reaaaaallly look like that, though.

The base structure was very monochromatic brick that I think contributes to the deco "carved in stone" aesthetic. By contrast, you can clearly see the wonder model just reused British city assets, which all have that grey framing/moulding on literally everything.

Battersea also has a very deco glass roof covering the entire upper structure, which is totally absent in the wonder model and replaced with crappy greenhouse-style roofs. And, in general, a lot of the additional glasswork on the wings is missing.

Granted, the Byrsa also looks like it was phoned in with reused assets, too.
