The legendary Montezuma

Yeah I think he's not so bad if you're only playing on cheiftan. I played my first game on cheiftan and it was so easy that I pretty much built every single wonder that came available and when I got bored with that I just conquered the entire standard sized map to end the game.

Montezuma is  EVIL  ! In my current game he assaulted me with infantries (He couldn't have researched them himself, must have gotten them from his poor vassal Justinian) I had to load a autosave and gift him the city he was trying to get along with other bribes. I hope that will calm him down... :run:

I played my best game ever last night. On Warlord, but a few more games like that and I'll be graduating to Noble pretty soon. Anyway, Monty had been a bit of a dick for most of the game, and I'd taken a few cities off him but not finished him off, but when the Malinese asked me to join them in having a crack at Monty, I did so, partly because I was trying to brownnose them in the noble interests of keeping their UN vote.

I captured a few cities, razed a few, and thought I'd removed him from existence. But his score hadn't dropped to zero.

I eventually found him completely by accident when a scout I'd completely forgotten about wander'd into his territory and got pulped.

He'd taken a settler and escaped to the antarctic wasteland at the very bottom of the continent - a level 2 city that had zero hope of growing, hemmed in 'twixt Egypt and Mali.

I couldn't be arsed to go after him, so I left him with the painful memory of his once proud empire. Poor auld sod.

Shaka is much scarier to me. He's got that extremely aggressive belligerence that Monty carries, but he's also smart with his warring. It's a deadly combo...

I love Monty with a passion... and it's not only that deliciously fruity headdress. He's eager to fight, and he remains backwards... a good combination. If your personal little maniac techs too well, he might become a threat eventually; no real danger with Monty. If your personal little maniac actually wages war in an effective fashion, he might become too powerful for your convenience - again rarely an option.

Montezuma is very good at dragging another civilization down in a series of pointless wars, which is exactly what I want in a henchman. It's the unpredictable, backstabbing variety that gives me trouble. Give me a hardcore warmonger any day; it's the likes of Catherine and Gilgamesh that make me uneasy.

Current game, I've got Monty and Saladin vassaled and I'm great pals with Brennus, Kublai, Alex, and Mao (fellow Confucian brothers all); I just keep siccing them like attack dogs on other AIs while I tech and Improve, all the while getting "our mutual struggle brings us closer" bonuses. I love running with a pack of pit bulls!

Yeah tell me about it. 2 Games in a row now she is at the top of us all in civ points. This game she decided she wants to try and conquer my lands and has been a real nuissance. She has vassaled 4 other civs and she also brought in 2 other allies against me, including The Korean guy. Then once I made peace with Korea she declared war on him. Then he begged me to protect him and asked to be my vassall so I accepted. But fighting 4 or 5 other Civs is not an easy task. It was really getting on my nerves. I managed to hold them all off but the damage was done because I am way behind in my techs now and they've all pillaged my improvements so I have no commerce to speak of. The worst part about it is suddenly 2 neighbors I had been friends with decided they wanted to join in on the act and backstabbed me. So I had to fend off Cyrus and Ramsees too just as I was finishing a truce with Catherine.

Man, it doesn't matter what I do. The entire world is ganging up on me! Even Saladin decided he wanted to sneak attack me. At least I still got my sexy biatch Bouidica that I think I can trust (who has vassaled Ghandi). That's alright though. Not all of them have oil and uranium so if I can make it that far and get the techs I need, not only will my tanks be able to wipe them out but they'll all have some nukes waiting with their name on it. :nuke: :mwaha:

I HATE Catherine. If she's on the map, she's first on my list. I'm surprised Elizabeth doesn't seem to ever be much of a factor; she seems like she would be major pain in the ass, but the AI never seems able to do much with her.

This is a rare case where Montezuma poses a legitimate threat AND has a lead tech-wise.

First, he gets the Shock Axes event. Okay, that's not all that bad. A little tougher to handle, but nothing serious. But it gets better...

He has marble in his territory, and he builds the Oracle. Which he uses to slingshot Feudalism and promptly adopts Vassalage.

So, by no earlier than 1740 BC, Montezuma is capable of building Longbowmen and Combat III+Shock Axes. Guess who's his neighbor to the south. :run: :suicide:

I don't understand Montezuma's inability to tech; anytime I see him in a game, he has big cities that are mostly surrounded by cottages. What is he spending all of this GNP on? I know it's not culture.

I was under the impression that the AI's got a bit of a break on upkeep costs. At the same time, I've seen guys such as Stalin have stacks much bigger than what Montezuma rolls with, but still keep up in the tech race.

The Korean Guy...Wang Kon!! He's an uber-wuss sneaky backstabbing jerk. He begged for a vassal spot with me once, too. after I kept ragnar from killing him he unvassalized himself later when Genghis came knocking on MY door. Jerk.
