The Loom of the Land

Wow this game is progressing amazingly. How on earth did you manage to take out Rome in those 10 turns?!

I'd be able to play tomorrow if you're willing to wait ;)

Absolutely. Once the cannons started rolling out the game started to move swiftly.

My take on the plan is; give Kublai steel and 300 gold to attack Ragnar (or not do that) , and then attack Ragnar after five turns or so.

Any other plans??

Ragnar doesn't have horses but teched to Milt trad . He has a bunch of rifles but is vulnerable. Churchill will also attack him for liberalism, but that would make Ragnar keep his troops to the south. We want them to march north.

The situation to re-cap with Oxford is that it needs to go into Boston probably, with workshops there to get it built.

Xyqtt has us in Police state(pyramids), and the units are flying off the production line. IW in Washington.

The GG can go to Mecca (already has an academy) for XP, or to Washington for an academy and numbers. You get to decide.

Merchant in Barcelona
GP coming in Mecca soon too. :)

Not sure if we should draft as the workshops are doing a good job.

Overall plan, if we take out Ragnar completely, we may have the land for domination, or we may have to stamp on Churchill which should be straight forward. Remain allied to Kublai all the way ? I don't do domination much so I'm asking for advice here.

Assume you have enough cannons reduce defence to 0 % and then try to suicido those cannons and if none of them loses. And after 3 cannons odds are >99% tou will probab;y win easy. So Ragnar shouldn't be any problem at all wiht all teh new troops which are scatted trough our lands

Wow! This game is on fire!

Er.... Sorry about that drafting grenadiers stuff....
I usually draft only rifles. I never bother with it until that era. I usually get Steel from Liberalism and :whipped: the grenadiers and cannons. Only when they start to see some competition (from rifles), I draft them to make things easier.

Well, about Nationhood: the happiness bonus is sweet and the (lack of) upkeep costs are even more! We may stay on this for longer, even without drafting. Madrid is the place for drafting because all of that seafood. But it's too far away, indeed. Don't know if it's necessary. Unless, of course, we get to draft muskets only for defense of our core cities and rising up our power rating. If the city can grow on either odd turn, that's the way to go. But before it, the Globe must be built (and it will take a while there).

Going for domination, we shouldn't bother with Kublai. Ragnar and Churchill will be enough for hitting the limit. We can try conquest, of course. But that means turning on the auto-raze button. Don't think, raze the city! Don't know if that's what we intend to do. There's always the vassal option, but if we wipe the civ out in less than 10 turns, like Xyqtt amazingly did, we won't be able to ask for capitulation.

IF Ragnar has no horses, he has no cavalry. IF he has no Cavalry, we have nothing to fear. Declare and wipe him out. Why give Steel away? I suppose it's still a monopoly tech. I don't think we are that short on cannons that we cannot win this war easily.

About the tech, I don't see we going any further on the tech tree than Rifling. Once we get there, switch to Universal Suffrage (when WW lets) and buy a round of grenadiers and cannons. I know I already said it, but we don't need Infantry. We need numbers!

Righto! Just looking at our power rating, it is comically high. I love the amount of cannons we have! Plan is to crush Ragnar. With his lack of horses I really don't think we'll need to enlist help from Kublai and giving up steel doesn't sound great.

Great General goes to Washington to build academy to really crank out the troops. Going to send the GM over to England for money to help us buy troops later if we want to. Started Oxford in Boston - 24 turns but this will half once Cumae's borders pop and we hook up the stone.
Inherited turn - 1600 AD : marshalling troops in preparation for a 2 pronged attack.
Turn 1 - 1605 AD : declare war. Take and raze Tonsberg (Ragnar's city between Medina and Mecca), no casualties. Madrid starts globe theatre - 43 turns! ouch. We can't built lumbermills yet so in the interests of getting it built before the end of the game I'm going to workshop its 2 forests.

Turn 2&3: moving troops.

Turn 4 - 1620 AD: We discover Economics. I don't see a free GM appear though - have we been beaten to it? Revolt to free market - we go from -53/turn to -43/turn. Next teching towards Rifling as someone suggested so we can go draft happy. Unfortunately the next thing on the road to Rifling is the rather useless Printing Press! Ragnar attacks our stack but doesn't kill anything. I take out his mini stack but lose a cannon.

Turn 5 - 1625 AD: Both Kublai and Churchill have PP. I'd rather trade with Kublai but we'd have to give him steel or military tradition and that doesn't sound like a great idea, so I trade the relatively harmless Nationhood to Churchill for it. Now researching Replaceable Parts. Lose a couple of cannons taking Uppsala, but at the rate we're producing them thats inconsequential. Wipe out another small stack Ragnar was threatening Baghdad with.

Turn 6 - 1630 AD: Take Nidaros again losing a cannon or 2. Stop for a quick heal. Our GM reaches London and brings home 2300 gold! I do a wee bit of upgrading, mainly old Elephants -> Cav.

Turn 7 - 1635 AD: Lose 3 cannons which I thought had an escort but in fact didn't. Doh. Then another 2 grenadiers at 90% odds! Whip the Globe in Madrid for 5 pop. I've done a bit of pillaging around Nidaros (after all we aren't allowed those cottages...) for some extra cash.

Turn 8 - 1640 AD: A GM is born in Mecca - what a nice bit of luck. I'll start him on his journey to London for another 2000+ gold. Take Roskilde at the cost of 1 cannon.

Turn 10 - 1650 AD: We take Haithabu for 2 cannons. A GG is born in Mecca - he could built us yet another academy or just be added to Mecca or New York for the XP. The bulk of our rather considerable army is either in Haithabu or nearby. Some of them need to heal but there should be enough on full health to set out for Ragnar's next city immediately - he's got 3 left in total. So far his military response has been pitiful, its just moving our troops into his lands that's taken time. We're only at 40% of land area needed so far, I suspect we will need to destroy Churchill too in order to get Domination.

It might be easier to take out Kublai - it'll save time as our army will already be up north from the Viking conquests, and I don't think there's a substantial difference between their military power. I should have checked earlier but Churchill has redcoats so he obviously has Rifling - we're almost at replaceable parts but it might be worth trading with him for rifling so we can go draft crazy. What would really speed up our victory more than anything are railroads though!

Next player please remember to hook up our stone to speed up Oxford - I forgot.

Nice turns :) That was fast. Next player shoudl finsh ragnar. But the problem who is the next player? In the orignal roster I was after fro but I played this time before fro. So I think mice is up now?

:ar15: :sniper: :ar15:

I love beating AI's with cannons! They are amazing! :)
Fro, I thought about railroads too, but do you guys think we can get it until the game ends? I don't think so. Well, after Replaceable Parts, it's just Steam Power and Railroads. I think we should try to get Rifling in trade, if and only if we do not have to give steel away, and then go that way. Trading Military Tradition for Rifling doesn't hurt that much, as we are getting the counter for the unit we are enabling.

Technically, I think I should be next. Mice played right before you, Xyqtt. I came to work earlier than normal today, thinking I could be at home to watch the UEFA Champions League final, but I don't think I'm gonna make it in time. Nevertheless (I always wanted to use this word!), I'll be home earlier and will have time to play in about 3 hours if it's ok with you guys.

Mice, I told you that space should be a bigger challenge. :p

Ok go and play the game. So it will be

fb(damnhardname:p)
mice
xyqtt
fro

Go and beat up those clowns form outer space!!!!!!!!!!
(you got to see that movie evil clowns form outer space it's great :P)

So, Fb , give an opinion on Fro's idea about attacking Kublai because he is closer. Kublai will spam cavalry, Churchill will spam redcoats.

To get Oxford done, just gang the workers to build workshops on the grassland there. It was me who pillaged the stone near Cumae. I forgot that it would be useful for Oxy.

pff liverpool were robbed, unlike last time we were the better team but that first milan goal was unbelievably lucky :)

Hey, Fro! I just got home in time to see Gerrard's loser face... It was so good to see it when Sao Paulo won the World Championship in 2005... I could now see it again!!! Boys don't cry, Gerrard!

Well, back on topic. I'm gonna download now the save. But, you see, cavalry have 2 movement points and Redcoats have 1. It won't be as easy as they were regular, non-protective, rifles, but I still think it should be easier.
Leave your emssages here. I'll check back before hitting enter. :)

Just looked at the save. Ragnar lives. So, it's him first. Those cities will cost me about.... 4 to 5 turns.
I can get Replaceable parts in 1. I THINK Churchill still doesn't have rifles. AND he doesn't have grenadiers. Don't know what you think, but I think he is pretty much easier than Kublai who has Grens, Rifles and Cavs...

Off I go! I don't know if I'll actually declare or not. See you soon...

Took way more time than I thought. I'll post the full autolog for you, guys, but the brief summary is:

  • Ragnar is dead
  • Kublai doesn't have Steel or Replaceable Parts
  • Churchill doesn't have Chemistry (nor Steel)
  • Both have Constitution on us
  • There are a bunch of stacks in the North, near Kublai.
  • There are some troops heading for Rome, just in case.
  • Suggestion: declare ON BOTH of them and win by conquest. :crazyeye:

As I see it, the perfect stack to attack Churchill is CR grenadiers and cannons protected with cavalry and rifles.

This is exactly what we have, so I think we should attack Churchill.

I'll move units down to the border, and possibly declare, but if not Xyqtt will have a couple of big big stacks to sort out the English.

Oh, this is a got it. I think that's right. Anyway I'll take it and set Xyqtt up

We'd win faster by domination but I guess conquest would be quite cool for a change :). If thats going to be the case then just churn out a huge number of units to have it over asap - maybe some drafting?

I was playing while you posted. I built only units, and drafted a bit but we dont need it.

Ok in this turnset I moved all our troops down south to England and formed up two stacks 2 tiles in from the border ( I'm sure the AI builds counters if they can see the stacks)

One stack to hit south, Nottingham and York . One stack to hit north , Hastings and London. This is the idea .

No building builds, only units. Drafted from Madrid, and left a few up there to deal with the northern city.

It's a devastating attack . I guess you get to do the honors Xyqqt

Mice -just played

Xyqtt - UP

Fro - on deck

If we're gonna conquest remember there's an English city on the island too.

Maybe we should just take the fast victory then. I think my previous fastest domination was by 1810 ish, we should be able to beat that one comfortably?
