Does anyone know if you need to have TEFEL certification to teach English abroad?

Depends on the country, I believe. The more developed the country the higher the qualification that you need. The less developed the less qualified you must be.

TEFEL, if I remember correctly, won't get you a job in France teaching English. But you might do fine in S. Korea.

What country are you thinking of?

I knew a woman went to teach English in Latin America but I've lost touch with her. Mind you she had a languages degree and was pretty fluent in Spanish as well. I think knowing the host language helps for teaching English generally. I don't believe the pay is good, though, wherever you go.
