The Very-Many-Questions-Not-Worth-Their-Own-Thread Thread XLIII

Well, we do have the AI thread, and videos/music could be posted there as an example of its present capacities/limitations.

And we do have an AI art thread:

Hmm that's a good Step One

Why is there an Egyptian smiley among the base set of smilies? :egypt: Seems random.

How often does one need to Egyptian up one's comment?

This is a CivFanatics site after all. Likely one of smilies to fit the theme of the site in ye olden times of early 2000s.

:spear:

Yeah, I thought of that. But it still feels random to me. If that was it, one would expect smilies representing other of the world's great civilizations.

Unless Egypt is to be taken as the ur-civilization, the icon for civilization as such (a status to which it might have some claim, I suppose).

What is the correct procedure for cooking mussels?

I always thought the rule was throw them away if they are open before you cook them, and throw them away if they are not open after you cook them. Neither the beeb nor Raymond Blanc mention the second rule, and both give different qualifications on the first.

I throw them away before if their shell is flat-out broken. Opening a little bit before cooking can just mean they haven't been kept sufficiently cold, so I don't bother discarding most of those.

I don't get terribly many that don't open, but I think I just don't bother with those. I'm eager to get the mussels on the table because they lose their heat quickly, so I work with just the ones that open easily.

But that's just me. I don't have any particular authority on this point.

Refill of prescription today. Cost of it rose quite a bit since last time. (Thankfully covered by pharmacare.) Tariff crap, or other reason?

Are they all still the same brand? I had a chat with my pharmacist a couple of days ago and he told me they had to substitute one of mine with a different brand. The reason is that due to all the crap going on in the U.S., some pharmaceutical supply chains are either somewhat uncertain or at risk. If this particular med comes from the U.S. and is hard to get anywhere else, that could have something to do with it. My best suggestion is to call your pharmacist and ask. It's a valid question, and in my case they didn't mind answering my concerns about my insulin. The brand the government lets me use is from the U.S. Others are available from two or three countries in Europe (why Canada doesn't manufacture it is beyond me, since it was invented here in the first place). Because the Alberta health minister is a heartless sociopath, she's not going to care if there's a supply problem.

Same brand.

So they didn't switch to a more expensive brand (not that any provincial government would). I'd still suggest a conversation with your pharmacist, even just to satisfy your curiosity (since you're still covered for it).

"Still covered" is critical. I'm still covered for eye exams. Others my age who aren't on a disability benefit had their coverage taken away. The provincial government desperately needs these funds that used to cover seniors and children to fund the premier's numerous trips to Florida and Washington where, she informs us, she's "saving Canada".

Gotta wonder what somebody slipped into her drink at Mar-a-Lago that first time. Her next press conference was online, from her hotel room bed (as the other premiers were meeting in person in Canada to discuss how to respond against the tariffs and "51st state" rhetoric), and ever since then she's been more BS!C than usual, and ramped up the vindictive spite against certain demographics here.

Don't think drugged drinks were involved. She's just a traitor.

I was being snarky. Danielle Smith has been a nasty, opportunistic grifter for many years. She's just ramped it up to Warp 23 since her first trip to Florida a few days before the inauguration.
