I Story
Back to the Index
The Mid-Evil Times - TMET:
The year is 500AD. Rome has just been overwhelmed by barbarians, and is now fighting to keep the barbarian horde out of Rome itself. After the Roman leaders left their lands, and after the barbarians looted all they could, the surviving people have started new nations, bound to take control of this vast and beautiful region.
Length: 400 turns, 1300 years.
Place: Fictive map, but it has some resemblance with the Europe of 500AD. This has allowed me to create many tactical areas & very different playing styles depending on your civ/where you are located.
The map is full of rivers, lakes, mountain ranges, swamps, forests & also has one desert to fight on and to fight for.
NOTE: The civilopedia still lacks pictures, but the texts are accurate & available for every unit/improvement/tech/government.
II Civ Descriptions
Back to the Index
There are 15civs, and all of them differ in their playing style & tactics.
Rome:
Ex-Superpower, now in war with the barbarians which have conquered everything except Rome itself. The ancient Roman greatness is being slowly forgotton and soon Rome will fall into Anarchy and forget how to build the great Legions that once were part of the best army in the world. After destroying the huge hordes of enemies, Rome is propably the easiest nation to play as.
Greece:
Old nation with deep roots in Hoplite warfare. It has recently been "liberated" from Roman rule (like the rest of the world) and is now fighting against the barbarians.
Egypt:
The third old & glorious nation which is in war with the barbarians. These three "civilized" civs are the easiest to play although they have a large portion of their income going into keeping their cities happy.
Germany & Russia (united in the MP version):
Two new civilizations north of Rome. In the beginning they are very Barbaric but will grow into great nations in the later ages. They are not in war with the Barbarians as they are Barbarians of sorts themselves, but war is inevitable if they wish to expand.
China & America (united in the MP version):
Two civs south of Rome. These two are more into cavalry than infantry, and can build the feared Cataphracts (which are only surpassed in the Middle Ages by Knight Cavalry). They are not in war in the beginning but will be, depending on the direction of their expansion.
Iroquies (part of the Barbarian Nations civ in the MP version):
The Desert Nation, it is located on the only river crossing the Eastern Desert. The also rely heavily on cavalry & horse archers. As they are quite small, warmongering is not something they are likely to do. Although they might go north of the river to destroy the Persians.
Persia (part of the Barbarian Nations civ in the MP version):
Small, 1 city nation which has lots of horses, both Cataphracts & Archers, and a settler in the beginning. Although small, it could through a nasty surprise on its southern neighbours.
France (part of the Barbarian Nations civ in the MP version):
Situated on the West Isle, it is a Seafaring civ that will have time to grow on its own until larger ships are invented. It will most likely grow into a strong Naval Power and is easy to defend due to the hilly isles which are far away from everything.
Babylon (part of the Barbarian Nations civ in the MP version):
Resembling very much the Vikings, they like on the Western shores of the Great Mountain Range. They get a few longboats at start, and in the Middle Ages their Berserks will be a major threat to anyone who gets in their way.
Zulu (part of the Barbarian Nations civ in the MP version):
Living on the very southwest corner of the map, these barbarians should be easy to contain, but don't let your guard down, as their units have the ability to cross the Swamps & Jungles where no-one dares go.
India & Aztecs:
These are the two unplayable barbarian civs. They are very effective and scary in the beginning but as their troops do not upgrade, they are stuck with ancient units. They are usually the first civs to go as they are scattered around, fight each other, and also fight Rome & Egypt eternally in addition to Greece & Japan from the beginning. Typically all civilized nations declare war on them to gain more territory easily. But an intelligent leader does this only after most of their troops have been destroyed by the larger nations

VI Download & Installation
Back to the Index
If you have ANY problems, please read the FAQ first.
a) - Downloading
b) - Installation
*If you can't open the files, you need to download & install WinRAR (here)*
Now, make sure that "Use Folder names" is ON (it is on by default, so if you don't know what this is, don't worry about it)
It's installed now! Simply start Civ3 Conquests > Civ Content > and select "The Mid-Evil Times". The Mid-Evil Times MP is the Multiplayer version of the scenario.
*New!* The Random scenario has a random map!
c) - Future patches
In the future, check back for any new patches in this post. If you don't know/remember your version, check the first line of your "Readme for The Mid-Evil Times.txt" in the "Civ3\Conquests\Scenarios" folder OR start a new game and check the version number from the scenario's name. Check for a new patch once per week or so. I'll keep incremental patches of earlier version available so that if you miss one update, you don't have to get the Full update.
ps. To make the changes in an update work, you'll have to start a new game. I'll inform you if a new game isn't neccessary.
d) - Playing
The loading process will take 1-10min depending on your computers speed! This is still very fast compared to other scenarios.
The first few turns might take a long time, as there are a lot of barbarians being killed
Also, if you're playing Rome, I suggest turning off battle animations for the first few turns (Press Ctrl+P ingame to access the preferences) until the huge barbarian hordes are killed.
One thing you're sure to notice is that running an army is very costly! Check the 'Loot' unit from the Civilopedia for a tip on that
The civilopedia is your friend, make good use of it.
VII FAQ
Back to the Index
These are the most common questions/problems and answers to them:
Q: What do I download?
A: Downloading & Installation
Q: When I download I don't get 24megs but something smaller!
A: Are you using Internet Explorer without any download helping software? There's the problem. IE's downloader is a really crappy one and many times loses the connection to the server and says that the file is complete although it isn't. There are three options:
1) Re-download the file. This time hope that IE doesn't mess up the download again.
2) Get software that actually can download reliably. I use Free Download Manager. It works perfectly and I assure you, it has no spy-ware whatsoever. After installing it it automatically starts monitoring your IE clicks for possible files. When you start downloading the screen pops up & asks where to save it.
3) Get a better browser. There are loads of IE replacements out there, the most common ones being Netscape, Firefox & Opera. Google for any of them and install.
Q: I can't open the files!
A: The files are rarred and need a program to open them. I use the .rar format because it is upto 30% smaller than .zip's. Simply download WinRAR from here. After installing simply open the files. You can extract them in many ways, the simplest being dragging & dropping the files into the correct places.
Q: The files are corrupt/I get errors while trying to extract them!
A: Check the answer to the 2nd question.
Q: How do I play this?
A: Open Conquests, press Civ-Content, and choose The Mid-Evil Times.
Q: I get "File not found - art\units\*unitname\*something*.*" error!
A: Are you using a German version of Conquests? If so, go here. If you're using another language, you'll have to a) reinstall in english or b) search for a utility on your language.
Q: I get *insert error* error!
A: Are you sure you've extracted the files to the correct place? Rerty that. If you still get an error, post the exact error message civ gives you! That is the ONLY way I can help you. If you've not registered at CivFanatics, you can view my IM names/email address by clicking on my name.
Q: There is something wrong with the scenario/I don't like this thing, it's not correct!
A: Please post about it at this thread, I'll answer you asap. If you've not registered at CivFanatics, you can view my IM names/email address by clicking on my name.
Q: How can I attack cities with the Mercenary Units?
A: You have to declare war to attack cities with units with Hidden Nationality. I know, the AI can attack your cities & conquer them without declaring war. The AI cheats
If you have other questions, please don't hesitate to post about it, I'll read it and answer to it asap.
Have Fun!
