I'll be brief on this quizz of the tiniest country of the EU so far. There isn't much to ask about it, eventhough I know it well for having lived most of my life some 80km from there.

Miyokan, you've got them all right (but the ones left unanswered ).

Nevertheless, French is also an official language and the one used by the government, as "Lietzebuerger" is a dialect of German and cannot be written. All people speak both French and Luxemburger, can read and write in German as well (though they don't like to speak it and speak their dialect instead). Most people can speak English as well. Movies are neither dubbed in French like in France and Belgium, nor in German like in Germany and Austria, but kept in original version with French subtitles.
10% of the population being made of Portuguese immigrants (don't ask me why they came there ) , Portuguese is also spoken- and that's weird enough.

Spacecow, for the poll, I know it's dumb, but it's just for fun. If you know where it is and don't live nearby, doesn't matter. Anyway, If you can answer the first question it already says that you know Luxemburg. Take it easy...

No, not that big ! It was not an empire, just a regular kingdom. Tip : it was not very near from Luxemburg.

Luxembourg was a Hapsburg territory. So you're referring to Spain?

I should know this, I live about 40km from Luxembourg.

Most interesting thing I can think of about Luxembourg is that King John the Blind of Bohemia (he really was blind) who died at Crecy (he managed to reach the English lines, but, obviously, wasn't much good once he got there...) is buried there, as is Patton. That, and it was Christianized by a dude named St. Willibrord (for the record, my favorite obscure saint name).

It was John the blind of Luxemburg, king of Bohemia (nowadays Czech Rep.) I was referring to. Luxemburg became a Habsburg territory only a century later, after the marriage alliance between Burgundese and Austrian Habsburg.


Q4 & 9 are still open. For Q4, I'd be happy with the monarch, not the Prime minister.

I live, currently, in a little village in Germany about 30km from Trier (on the other side of Luxembourg from you). Incidentally, I used to live in Japan, many years ago (I was 6 when I left). How interesting.

Trier isn't it ? I have been there with my Japanese girlfriend last July before to go back to Japan. We presently live in central Tokyo. Ima nihongo wo benkyou wo ****eirun desu ga, amari jouzu ja nai.
Well, I don't know if you've learned some Japanese there ; maybe you were too young to remember. Where were you living ?

Ich spreche auch ein bischen Deutsch, weil Ich habe Ausstauchschuler 4 Monaten in Berlin gewesen. Aber ich kann nicht mehr errineren. Es macht schon 4 Jahren dass ich nicht mehr Deutsch benutzt habe.

Hamlet, good to give it a try, but these questions were already answered, and eventhough you only got 1 and 2 right. "Luxemburg" is both the English and German spelling ; it is Luxembourg in French and Lietzebuerg in Luxemburger (dialect of German).

Sorry, but siege, I mean SEAT o a slip of tongue, or keyboard I don't know), which is the headquarters of a political institution.
