I'll be brief on this quizz of the tiniest country of the EU so far. There isn't much to ask about it, eventhough I know it well for having lived most of my life some 80km from there.

Questions for dumbs Am... :

1) Where is Luxemburg ?

2) What's the capital of Luxemburg ?

3) About how many people live in Luxemburg

Normal questions now :

4) Who is the head of state of Luxemburg ?

5) What languages are spoken in Luxemburg and which one(s) is/are official(s) ?

6) In the end of the middle ages, the Duke of Luxemburg was also king of another European region, much larger. Which one is it ?

7) What was the national currency of Luxemburg before the Euro ?

8) How many countries border Luxemburg ?

9) What European institution has its siege in Luxemburg ?

10) I can't think of a tenth question that people might be able to answer...

I know that the smallest state is the vatikan state.

The poll is pretty dumb, what if you dont live nearby or there then what am i gonna answer?

Miyokan, you've got them all right (but the ones left unanswered  ).

Nevertheless, French is also an official language and the one used by the government, as "Lietzebuerger" is a dialect of German and cannot be written. All people speak both French and Luxemburger, can read and write in German as well (though they don't like to speak it and speak their dialect instead). Most people can speak English as well. Movies are neither dubbed in French like in France and Belgium, nor in German like in Germany and Austria, but kept in original version with French subtitles.
10% of the population being made of Portuguese immigrants (don't ask me why they came there:confused: ) , Portuguese is also spoken- and that's weird enough.

Spacecow, for the poll, I know it's dumb, but it's just for fun. If you know where it is and don't live nearby, doesn't matter. Anyway, If you can answer the first question it already says that you know Luxemburg. Take it easy...

I knew all the answers to, i just didnt want to sound as if i am a know it all.

"6) In the end of the middle ages, the Duke of Luxemburg was also king of another European region, much larger. Which one is it?"

The Holy Roman Empire?

No, not that big ! It was not an empire, just a regular kingdom. Tip : it was not very near from Luxemburg.

Luxembourg was a Hapsburg territory. So you're referring to Spain?

I should know this, I live about 40km from Luxembourg.

Most interesting thing I can think of about Luxembourg is that King John the Blind of Bohemia (he really was blind) who died at Crecy (he managed to reach the English lines, but, obviously, wasn't much good once he got there...) is buried there, as is Patton. That, and it was Christianized by a dude named St. Willibrord (for the record, my favorite obscure saint name).

Where do you live Thuloid ? We must be neighbours I guess - well, except that I have moved to Japan now.

It was John the blind of Luxemburg, king of Bohemia (nowadays Czech Rep.) I was referring to. Luxemburg became a Habsburg territory only a century later, after the marriage alliance between Burgundese and Austrian Habsburg.

Q4 & 9 are still open. For Q4, I'd be happy with the monarch, not the Prime minister.

I live, currently, in a little village in Germany about 30km from Trier (on the other side of Luxembourg from you). Incidentally, I used to live in Japan, many years ago (I was 6 when I left). How interesting.

4.Grand Duke Jean
9.There are lots of European governmental and financial bodies with offices in Luxembourg. I'm afraid I don't know enough to have some idea which one you mean. Also the headquarters for RTL are there.

Where in Japan?

Q4 : right !

Trier isn't it ? I have been there with my Japanese girlfriend last July before to go back to Japan. We presently live in central Tokyo. Ima nihongo wo benkyou wo ****eirun desu ga, amari jouzu ja nai.
Well, I don't know if you've learned some Japanese there ; maybe you were too young to remember. Where were you living ?

Tschuess !

That's funny, the forum doesn't accept my Japanese ! Maybe because the verb to be has "s h i t" in it ? Thunderfall, you should create a language detector in your superb censoring programme !

French, German, Dutch, I think. Methinks French is the offical one.

Hamlet, good to give it a try, but these questions were already answered, and eventhough you only got 1 and 2 right. "Luxemburg" is both the English and German spelling ; it is Luxembourg in French and Lietzebuerg in Luxemburger (dialect of German).

Sorry, but siege, I mean SEAT (:o a slip of tongue, or keyboard I don't know), which is the headquarters of a political institution.

Of course HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE! Think of Karl IV. 1346-1378. I thought you're Luxemburgian, so you should know better!

And btw (to all Americans), it's HABSBURG, not Hapsburg! Someone must have taught you wrong.
