THE My most absurd starting location THREAD

Barb galleys I think are about four times MORE likely in 3.17 ;) (seriously, I think that's how its coded). A couple months back I complained like hell because of them and their impact on the LHC games (isolated starts). Eventually I got a bit used to them. I had a clump of 2 galleys and later 3 on the eastern part of the island, and the expansion rate I used actually fogbusted some of the problem area where they can spawn. The exception was that I could get them from the east (I'd see them from the west a mile away), but they're only truly bad with insufficient fogbusts or terrible luck. Obviously on a map like this you can't rush MC too quickly, so abuse coast defense as much as possible and fogbust! Similarly fast expansion and well-placed archers are how I took the island over from the barbs. I didn't get axes until I had 7 or 8 cities or something, IIRC. PRO is actually at its most useful here (though still not very).

Edit: Getting beat to lib isn't the end of the world. If you cottage and put the correct multipliers in, you can catch up. Hell, with tech trading off you can catch AIs with a tech lead that managed not to get a key military tech.

I've won games where I lost liberalism while not even having paper yet, although admittedly tech trading was on (although that's largely how I fell behind in the first place so eh).

To replicate that startingposition, use the parameters that threadstarted said he used, this works even in 3.17. The mapgenerator has a "bug or feature" (choose yourself which one) when you use the "Custom continents, one continent per team" map. In my experience in 99% of the mapgenerations, one or more civs will start on a one-two tile island of the main continent. I've even had one where a civ started on a one tile island, cut of from the maincontinent until second borderpop, or optics or something (don't recall exactly how it was).

But these maps can be pretty funny to play, the AI doesn't handle it very well to start in such a location so the human has an advantage. Though the AIs that do start on a main continent will have an early advantage.

Would be cool to play a "rush to the continent" map, where everyone starts on the little island off a main continent, and have nobody start on the mainland.

You all have had it: a game where the starting position is pure irony compared to what you would expect from the map name.

Please post your favorite nonsense start, the ones that make you laugh loud, and restart. My best/worst one so far:

A custom game, custom continents. I chose 'one continent per team' and get this:

Good one, hu?
But wait: it gets even better! The world builder reveals on this very map:

If you go and build those Easter Island statues and your capitol will be a great capitol. You'll get off to a massive tech advantage very early. This might not be so bad. You have your own little Kingdom of Tyre going on there.

I did indeed put moai there but that's a terrible capitol location due to colonial maintenance. It's probably possible to win without moving the palace, but it's definitely better to move it.

Surely, I agree that moving it as your empire expands is the best course. I was just saying that early on it's not so bad of a starting location. You don't really have to worry about you capitol being pillaged and you don't have to waste time working the tiles.

Seafood is pretty much the most suspectible thing there is to pillaging. ;)

Pretty obvious Maoi site though.

Just abandoned my second attempt when I got a barb events followed by losing three 95% battles in a row within 20 turns - the barb event took my to-be capital with Axemen and razed another town, then I got unlucky and lost a town to barb warrior/warrior/warrior when defending with three(!) archers.

:aargh:

It seems this map no like Simple Simon :(

Random events are not balanced and they're the one setting I *ALWAYS* turn off unless I'm in a forum game that defaults them on. Runaway AIs or instant loss by chance! No thanks.

Ok, guys this is what always happens to threads like these. One person shows something, the rest of the thread is about that one. So stop spamming (I think that includes me :P)! Let's get back on topic and start showing some absurd starting locations.

Edit: In fact, I think you should reset this thread, no offense to TheMeInTeam, I appreciate your suggestions as how to win this save, however, this thread is about absurd starting locations. If you want to post your game, please do so in another thread.

Now, I am assuming the thread starter agrees with this, if not. Forget what I said... ok?

I don't mind criticism, but the thread starter specifically asked me to show a way to play from this start ;).

That said, I'm also up for seeing some more odd starts.

Frankly, I don't consider it spamming. I think it's a good idea to post horrible starts and see what people can do with them (I'm actually surprised it hasn't been done before). So, I say, keep the thread rolling and bring on some more horrendous starts. I'm sure we can give those Funny Screenshots guys a run for their money. :)

I love the discussion, but I also would like to see more absurd starts!

:)

I apologize immediately, as I didn't realize that the thread starter had asked for a walkthrough.

Nonetheless, I too like some absurd starting locations (already put mine in!).

Edit: Nope, I didn't! But as I was looking through, I remembered I asked for the walkthrough too! How wrong of me!

Edit 2: Ok, so here is my absurd starting location. I thought I put it in this thread though... must of been in another one.

That's alot of marble, Dude.

WOW, that's a lot of food, even more impressive with food than the marble! Any meaningful increase in the :) cap makes this a prat whipping god city, you might even want to split the food up a bit actually in starts like that as that amount will be difficult to make use of early on (even the seafood start had that issue!).

If I roll something odd when looking for HoF games I'll put it here.

WOW!

this really calls for a tight build, so as to share the food around a bit!

I'm kind of late on this thread, but I custom-made one a few months back... I still have the save, though it is for regular civ 4, no patches, no expansions. Interested?
