The Non-Midas Touch, Deity Variant, 1.21PTW

I'd like to propose my idea, then. As you see in my sig, I've been meaning to start SAAM1: Apple Attack. Leader: Woz'n'Jobs Civilazation: Cupertanians
Based on the Persians, the UU is the iBeing (Immortal). They are Scientific and Commercial (the ability to make i everything). They are a peaceful civ, but they have a mortal enemy, the Gatepeople. Bill of the Gatepeople (Industrious/Militaristic) is the mortal enemy of Woz'n'Jobs. Based on India, UU is The Monopolist (War Elephant). The Cupertanians and the Gatepeople are always feuding. They are peaceful to all others, but Gatepeople dont seem to like the Linuxians, while the Cupertainans dont see any problem in them (Industrious/Scientific, Based on Babs, Linus the Bowpenguin). The Cupertanians and Gatepeople are always at war. However, the Cupertanians wish to leave this world and head to space.

Basically, its a spruced up Space Race with a bit AW on one civ. Any comments?

I'm sad because this is my 1st SG loss. Okay, I haven't played a lot, but still... Next time you give this variant a try, be sure to have enough fertile land to grab !!! I don't think I'll go with your next idea, Nad, I realize I have way too much Civ going on, and 3 SG at a time is too much with all those other Civ games going on... I plan to run a personal SG one after the other, a bit like you. The 1st one is already well engaged. The 2nd one could start in a few weeks (depend on my holidays). If you have any nice ideas to give...

BTW, I'm sorry, because I know I'm quite responsible for the QUICK decline of our civilization. I "assume" (don't know if it's English, I mean I reckon the responsability) that mistake. But no tears, time to get some glory on other fields !

Krys please dont assume responsibility for this loss,

I'm sure I speak for most of us when I say that we had a snowballs chance in hell BEFORE your turn.

Tis a shame these games can go both ways, and the victories we shall win from dire straights will be all the sweeter after this loss...

Still THE TEAM still has a 2-1 win-loss ratio and Nads next game should be fun :satan: although if Nad chooses Deity a quick one ;)

And so it has come to pass that Alexander in his wisdom relinquished control of his once mighty empire, it would seem that the halcyon days of youth had inevitably faded once more into the long dark winter of the soul.

The Czarina in the west stamped an iron fist upon the earth and our once proud land trembled and fell. This widespread growth of capitalism was anathema to our simple views of the republic and the solidarity of the polis.

Our friend eternal, Plato, had these words to say
every man, from his very boyhood, fancies that he is able to know everything. Speaking generally, our glory is to follow the better and improve the inferior, which is susceptible of improvement, as far as this is possible.

Good game all

If you try this variant again on Deity, I'm willing to give it a try (if you have space of course). In case its relevant, my strengths are with MM cities, though I usually don't do more than a couple in important ones thoroughly, unless I’m in real trouble. I'm good at defensive warfare, but my offensive warfare skills are limited (I only go into offensive wars with overwhelming force, and even then I find them boring). If you are going for conquest or domination victory I probably won't want to play. I usually go for spaceship or UN. I've had one deity win but that’s mostly cause I got bored with it after the first one and got stuck doing OCC's (which invariably failed on deity , though emperor is easy).

Anyway, enough about me, its your choice ;). If it’s ok with you, post on this thread when the new thread starts, so I know where to look. Also, I wouldn't mind a small map, as we are going to have to do a lot of diplomacy, and the less civs to check the better. This would be my first succession game, though I am an avid lurker.

A different game for those who are interested. :D

Stuck: that's a great idea you have there! Are you going to do the modding yourself? And are you going to get some apple leaderheads? :D

You should definitley start a thread for that game, I'm sure it will fill up quickly.

Krys: good luck in your SGs and I hope you'll want to be back for the NMT Grudge match when we do that!

Mopheo: the rematch won't start for a while yet, but I will PM you when it does, or post a link in this thread. There seems to be a lot of interest in this varient! We might even be able to do 2 teams when we come to replaying this game.

Sorry to reactivate an old zombie... Black memories from another world, the World of the Forgotten.

Hum, I was just thinking again about Nad's 1st turn. Building a barracks first seemed to be very weird to me when you did it, but I said OK, there are those barbs, ready to pop out of their hut... Now, I wonder if this was a wrong decision or not. Sure, delaying a granary on this crappy start (how many times did I mention this "crappy start", like other people, reading it again is some fun :D ) is very annoying. But what did we care about the barbs ? We could just have hidden our worker behind a warrior, and if we hadn't been able to stop them, we would just have lost some gold coins, and that's where I come to my point : WE DIDN'T NEED THAT GOLD !! :goodjob: I don't recall anyone talking about this, but maybe we could have done better... Who knows ? Nad, you did what you thought was the best to do, but wouldn't you think this was a mistake ? (we all made some, BTW :p )

Hehe, no offense there. Just a friendly analysis. :)
I hope to be in the NMT Revenge, though I'm not sure of my "Civ future" at all... :( Kinda feel depressed by MY problem (see current sig).

Krys: don't give up on Civ 3!! Soon you'll find a game you'll really like and your enthusiasm will be rekindled.

About the barracks first....I don't think it was a mistake at all, and I don't think it slowed us at all...our biggest limit at the start of the game was food, not shields. We had tons of shields with those bgs and fur forests. Athens needed to grow before it could start producing settlers, and slipping the barracks in 1st to avoid barbs did not slow our growth at all. Look at the end of my first turn...Athens is size 3, even though it's been running max food. In any game, you want your capital producing settlers around sizes 4-6...what would we have built if not the barracks?....it took a while to research pottery, so we'd simply have ended up building even more warriors...

As it was, we did not get a break, the hut was empty...if we'd popped a settler out of that hut, we'd have been laughing. Speaking of which, this was over a month ago, but check out Sirian's recent first turn in ST-1...he does exactly the same thing I did here, build a barracks first with a non-mil civ to avoid barbs from a hut that will pop after 10....and he got lucky, he popped a settler. Those are the breaks.

So it's a very interesting question that you've posed, but I think the barracks was the least of our problems, and it was actually a benefit that we were building vets rather than regulars.

Oh, if you say so, you could be right after all ! :goodjob: I've been so OBSESSED by the settler factory since the day I saw it working perfectly ! So it's the crappy start ALONE that definitely slowed our growth (in terms of population and cities).

About my little and egocentric problem, I'm not sure you know what it deals with. I can't play US (or UK, or whatever) modded games. :( No GOTM, and I don't want to continue thinking about my hypothetical mod now. It's been days since I started trying to really get a solution to this, but I somehow failed (it's not the end of it, though). Now I feel a bit depressed, and I'm losing the taste of playing some Civ games. :( That's why you can see me more often in this forum !! ;) And holidays and a bloody school year to come don't make me Civ-happy again. Pah...

Now going to read Sirian's game... That makes me think I'm lazy/unwilling to play the Epics solo games I had planned to play.

That was krys' sad post. :goodjob:
