Thank you very much for ditching that old deity model. (pre 1.29)
Some quotes from Soren Johnson (firaxis) in a posting below

The crazy tech rate of the old deity was imbalanced and was
easily overcome, so it was hardly an increase in difficulty.

Acheiving Industrial Age before 10AD

Using an expansionist civ, a huge map , with huts its possible to
acheive industrial age by 10AD. With trading, buying cheap techs
combined with a war, the tech tree is easily climbed. Its even
possible to get to the Industrial Age. (This has been done)

The old deity was imbalanced as the ancient era passed quickly

By the time you send you bowmen for example to attack you may
come across some riflemen in the BC`s year :( In my first game
the Aztecs had Riflemen in BC and I thought well thats not the
way to go. So the initial progression was change to knights/cav

Thanks for the new model :):):) (1.29f patch)

A quote from Soren Johnson (Firaxis)

They value techs higher so a pure research strategy should be
more viable

Thank you again

This also means you are less likely to get techs in a peace treaty

I will almost be sad to see the old days go... the game will be a bit easier to play though. I guess I won't be launching spaceships in 1250AD anymore (and Sirian actually won a diplomatic victory in 750AD with the 1.21f patch)!
