It's so you can always best judge the cars closest to you, I think. What's an automatic like to drive?

You put it in gear and go. ;) With modern automatics, efficiency is about the same as manuals. Not as interesting to drive though. They're better for trailers and semi heavy loads (below commercial truck level). They require less attention in most respects. But you have to watch for them getting going too fast down hills. People who only have driven standards sometimes have trouble adjusting, because they keep trying to do things they don't need to do. I drive both, and in a smaller car prefer manuals. But I don't have any trouble going back and forth between them. On rare occasions I'll forget which I'm in and reach for something I don't need to, but it doesn't cause any trouble.
