Why do people insist on making generalist statements about opposing parties/ideologies/thoughts that serve no useful purpose in a debate except as an attempt to minimize their opponent? Do said people realize it makes them look unintelligent?

I remember no reason being used by Kerry, basically just a campaign of, "I'm not Bush!" and of the 2006 and 2008 elections where all the democrats who won seats that I am aware of basically used, "we didn't support Bush!" as their rallying cries.

Manchester, perhaps slightly south. Given how different the dialects are twenty miles east or west in Liverpool/ Sheffield we can narrow it down to a strip about twenty miles wide centered on Manchester and perhaps thirty-five high from Manchester down to near Stoke-on-trent.
Perhaps I'm imagining it but I thought there was a hint of Scottish every now and then.

Not so much any more, esp with 50% of kids going to uni. But the degree of difference in what are now accents (rather than the dialects they were) was so great that a hundred years ago people could tell what part of a village people were from.
I remember a few years ago seeing a recorded interview about the Blitz with a woman who lived her whole life in London. Couldn't understand a word she said. In the US there are regional accents and a bit of dialect. But TV, radio, movies, and mobility are lessening that.

Well, as a homosexual who has never been to a gay bar. Nothing. Good for business I suppose. Being able to go to a bar to enjoy drinking, club music, dancing and being drunk with friends without being groped or hit on is something that plenty of women want.
And then they miss the attention towards their breast..
And they also go: "Sigh so many hot, sexy, successful man and they are all gay." Get depress over their last pathetic balding, sweaty, blind date and drink a lot. Which is good for the bar...

Anecdote: I've been in a gay bar once, and the women I saw were obviously with teh gay as well. So obviously so with their dancing that they could of been the entertainment.

I'll be honest: I don't. I just don't see how it affects me or the international community. It's their own business, as far as I'm concerned. Though I'm happy the media decided to report something else other than "Michael Jackson died".
