The Raw Meat Thread

I thought raw meat was supposed to be bad because of all the diseases that can be found.

It depends on the meat and the preparation. Obviously with anything raw it can be sometimes a gamble, however it is like that with cooked food too.

There are some animals I would never consume raw--poultry, for example. But some meats are fairly safe to eat raw, especially if you prepare it same-day and have good sanitation and hygiene in your kitchen (or in whatever restaurant you like to eat at).

My mom used to make a meatloaf-type dish in Poland. You take ground beef, mix it with salt, pepper, garlic, breadcrumbs, a chopped up onion.. mix it all up, make small patties, fry them, serve with mashed potatoes.

Well, while she was making the meat, every once in a while she'd make me a "raw beef sandwich". Which was basically the beef stuff with all the spices, uncooked.

REALLY good. All you need is to put it on a piece of rye bread with some butter.

Also raw whale meat (as sushi) and raw horse meat (eaten like sashimi, but I think it has another name that I can't remember).
桜肉 (sakura-niku) or 馬刺し (basashi) if served as sashimi.

I had it when I lived in Nagasaki (just to the east is Kumamoto, where I read it's popular.) I don't really remember the taste, but I'm not a raw meat person unless it's fish.

I like sashimi ok but I don't like paying for it.

I used to have steak-tartar on occasion when I ate beef.

The idea of eating raw chicken seems pretty gross to me though I knew a guy online (on a raw food forum) who managed to get it down.

I haven't really eaten raw meat, although I have eaten a couple of rather rare steaks. I'd be perfectly willing to eat raw fish in sushi or otherwise if it is safe.

I wouldn't want to eat raw fowl of any kind, it is so bloody delicious when cooked! Especially the wonderful dark meat *drools slightly*

Ive had raw chicken straight out of my friend's coop before. Its quite good. Like with sushi, if you deep freeze it, it will probably be better off. I still wouldn't try it again though. I didn't get sick but once is enough imo.

The quality of meat and processing is really important as salmonella is only one of the lesser diseases you might get.
I once had basashi which was uber delicious but couldn't find any in Germany till now :(
Raw chicken is one of the things I would not eat as the chance of them being contaminated with salmonella is quite high. (IIRC one out of every twelve for Germany)

Yes, it's a high risk just about anywhere, possibly one of the most gamble raw meats you can eat I think.

When I was in San Francisco, one of my friends from San Jose took me out to a fancy Japanese sushi house.. It was a trendy place.. Everyone had suits or nice dresses on, the place looked very fancy, there was techno playing. Made me feel like a Yakuza boss

So we get int here, and my friend is like "This one's on me".. which is fine with me, the guy's got a good job at Yahoo. We sit down and are greeted by the most professional waiter I have ever dealt with. He even bowed and stuff and he didn't look Japanese at all... Anyway, I let my friend order whatever sushi he recommended and looked through the Sake menu (which was at least 5 times as thick as the sushi menu)

Anyway, the sushi we ended up getting was AMAZING. Some of the best food I've ever had.. Most of it was sashimi, I think. Basically pieces of fish or steak, not wrapped up in anything. Man.. I still can't get over how good some of that stuff tasted. We had this whitefish thing that was.. just incredible. And the sake that I ordered? Best stuff I ever had.

Anyway, I'm addicted to sushi now.. and not the "all you can eat" kind, which is what I usually eat here in Canada. Too bad it's so goddamn pricy..

You could try looking at Metro. The seafood in that store is usually well priced, especially the shrimp.

The grocery store? No way is it as fresh as the stuff I ate at that restaurant. I think for that I'd have to find an upscale sushi house here, and even then I doubt it'd be as fresh - we aren't anywhere near to the ocean here.. whereas SF is.

Probably not fresh, no. You'd have to go to a market at a port town or city to get something resembling fresh fish.

Well I had some Bratwurstgehäck the day before yesterday. It's the raw filling of a bratwurst and mostly spiced up with pepper.

that's what we all would be eating if the brits had won the war.

wait...

Thanks. :)

馬刺し isn't very popular in Tokyo I think. There weren't that many places I could find it, and most of my friends hadn't tried it or didn't like it. But it's really, really good!

If you think you're eating fresh fish, do yourself a favor and save money by not going to trendy japanese places. You won't be able to tell the difference.

Edit: actually, do go. There's no reason to go there unless you enjoy the atmosphere. And it seems like you do.

Well, the one place in SF we went to I REALLY liked... and mostly for the food, even though the atmosphere was great too.

I frequent an all you can eat sushi place here.. it's pretty good, but has nothing on the place in SF (Wish I could remember the name)

I'm gonna try a fancy sushi house, I know we have a couple.. and see how that compares

I eat raw meat (as in not cooked or heated by other means) quite often in the from of raw sausage or raw ham. It didn't occur to me until now that other people might never eat raw meat.
