The Rood and the Dragon - the Anglo-Saxon scenario

Possibly he meant that there are some threads that are in this forum even though they're not completed scenarios, whereas this one is. I couldn't possibly comment!

But yes, I did my best to throw in lots of "deliberate" errors to keep the discussion going for a while, as you can see from the first few pages of the thread. Evidently I didn't have enough. Well, I'll make sure that the next scenario is so buggy that it'll *never* leave the first page!

well done
COMPLETELY loved this scenario...

i was playing it happily for 2.5 hours as mercia: I had expanded to fill my borders; built sutton hoo and the warrior hall (dig those pagan warriors!!); just enteredthe early christian era;

was on the verge winning my first war against Lindsey, taking 4 of their five cities, and poised to take that too... when...

i suffered a diplomatic loss. huh??!!

i noticed a few people had this problem in the early days of this (fantastic)scenario. anybody any clue as why this might happen?

Well, basically, that shouldn't be happening. Are you quite sure it wasn't a cultural loss? I thought that the couple of people who reported diplomatic losses had simply got them mixed up. At least I hope so.

I'll have a look through all the bits and bobs to make sure I didn't accidentally give something the ability to cause a diplomatic victory - although if I had, you'd think a player would have managed it. Most mysterious! Glad you liked the scenario though. And welcome to CFC, too.

ok so i played again this evening as essex amd it was fine.
perhaps its a bug with mercia? but it was definitely a diplomatic loss. oh well!
and thanks or the welcome!
:)

great job, this is the best scenario ive downloaded yet. its extremely fun, historically acurate, and when you play you just get that vibe that it was made by a pro. Im lookin' forward to your next scenario, whatever it may be, but might i suggest the hundred years war, british civil war, or something like that....

[KingArthur] I didn't know that the different versions of Conquests can lead to that labels difficulty too. But that must be it, as I've checked the text files and I don't seem to have mislabelled anything. This scenario needs Conquests 1.22, so anyone trying it with an unpatched version of Conquests will get oddities like this.

[jellywes] Welcome to CFC, and thanks for your comments - glad you enjoyed it. It might be quite fun to have a series of scenarios set on the same map, with the Wars of the Roses, the Civil War, and so on - but I don't know enough about them to do them! In fact my next scenario is at beta stage right now, so watch out for it.

Glad to hear you are making another. This one has been the best one I've played so far
(or at least my favorite) It involves every aspect of the game, not just hit points.
Very entertaining design and detail so I am sure your next one will be the same. Compelled to try to make my own but finding it not as easy as I thought. I am not as well versed in this computer stuff.

Finally got a points victory as Kent. If time did not run out, may have been able to get
a cultural. After absorbing some of the "ex" tribes I ran into trouble with a large and
furious bunch of Powys. Having a near monopoly on barley was not able to help with tech trading but it did enable me to trade for other resources and placate those crazed Powys for awhile. Saw a longboat approaching from the east but don't know
what happened to it. It just disappeared.

When was the last major update of this scenario? I downoaded it in late January and I'm sure it must have been since then and want to play it again with whatever changes have been made, so which post has the patches (if any)?

Hi Landmonitor - in fact there have been no updates since then. The last one was on the "edited" date of post number two, which was last December. The download link in that post is the only one - there are no patches.

As I've said, I'm planning on doing an update some time in the next couple of months, probably, though this won't be anything drastic - just a few little additions and the incorporation of some new graphics. Of course there will be an announcement when that happens!

First of all: Great work Plotinus! One of my favorite scenarios!

Some minor bugs I noticed (maybe you already addressed these, but I believe I got the 1.3 version):
- Columba's Monastery produces Settlers instead of Celtic Monks
- Metal-Smith, Bead-Smith and Brewery all claim (via CivPedia) to increase Luxury trade (more happieness per lux), but in fact they don't. They each make 2 citizens content and increase luxury production (via slider) by 50% though. Don't know if that is intentional or not...

I concur! This is one of the best scenarios I've ever played - I've come back to it again and again.

Guess it will be time for a "relifting" soon, especially with the many very nice units from Anno Domini :
cf http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3055794&postcount=2

I am sure you could incorporate some to add or to replace existing units while correcting the bugs. About that, I commend Taijian for his bug-hunting. He is good !

I'd hate to see this scenario falling on the second page.

That's the plan, Loulong! I planned to update this after Anno Domini came out, as I knew there would be plenty of units and LHs from it that I could incorporate into it - in fact there are already considerably more than I anticipated. So the updated version should look pretty good. I'll also take into account all the little bugs that have been picked up. The revisions I'm making to it aren't too sweeping - just a few little additions, and also a new civ just to stir things up a little - but they should make it just that little bit more polished.

I'd also like to do a proper MP version, with a smaller map, and I was also thinking it might be fun to do a random map version, with each civ having its own UU. That might be possible now given how many R8XFT is making. If I did that, then I think I'd make it so you could play any of the civs, even the Picts or the Vikings - although they'd lose their head start on a random map, of course! I'd be interested to know if people like the sound of that.

I'll do all that *after* I've completed my other scenario, which has been in the works for far too long, so I just want to get it done. I've actually spent much of the past week working on that, and it's very near completion, so hopefully it shouldn't be too long.

Thanks for the bump, anyway, and thanks also to Taijian and Seafoideach for the comments. Watch this space!

I would be very much interested in something like that. I tried almost
every other civ in this scn already and always wanted to try to be Pic or Vik.
(always looking for a good Viking scn)
It would have to be modified to make it fair but I don't try it myself.
Wish I could pick your brain about making scn's.
Regardless looking forwards to your new one.
(this one still my favorite) :D
