How do you use the Conquistador? Is this guy any good at all? I mean he isn´t very strong, comes late and when I saw the price shield I nearly keeled over. :crazyeye: Whaddaya think?

I had to say very special if you know how to use it. That's pretty much how it is. It's not some super buff unit, but more like a stealth unit in a way. It's weaker then the knight, which is available earlier, but the six moves per turn thing is just totally awesome if you know what to do with all the movement. You can usually outflank the enemy pretty easily.

On the other hand though, I'd say that the expense of them should go down, they aren't worth all you put into them.

The explorer idea would be much better if it came earlier but since it doesn't it is pretty worthless. The conquistador fixes some of that with a little attack but it's still close to dog crap.

Excellent, but I was the one who pushed for it to be how it is instead of the lamer low-powered low-cost cav that they had it as before. At least this one has an interesting use. An army of them can pillage nine tiles in one turn.

I Have never really tried Spain in a normal game, but the Conquistador is very good in the Age of Discovery Conquest. The always 6 movement is very useful in the rough terrain of South America and Africa, they make an extremely good barbarian and native civ killer, and can move back to heal after attack. Even the Amphibious ability was useful(but I think that is only for the AoD scenario). I won Age of Discovery easily with Spain, didnt even use knights once.

And an army of conquistadors can be very effective....

an army of Conquistadors are VERY effective. but just make sure you get them out before the AI overtake you in tech otherwise they're plump targets.

I love Conquistadors :hammer:

On Emperor+, the AI is ahead of you by definition, so I assume they are plump targets always, unless you play below Emp?

I played an SG where we could only use Conquistadors to attack. It was actually pretty easy. Don't underestimate Conquistadors in large numbers.

Yeah I hosted the said SG, and it did a pretty good job. Only unit we allowed ourselves to attack with. The game was regent, so it was easy to be up in techs, but you know, they come so late...

An army of conquistadors is the bane of any land. It pillages just too many tiles a turn. Those make the spanish a good AW civ, despite their rel/sea traits.

Ah, you are the culprit! ;)

I must say I´d be perfectly happy with a 5-3-2 Conquistador that ignores terrain like the Scout (always move 2) and costs 60 or so.

And that's the great thing about civ, you can mod it to be that.

You are right of course, but it would somehow feel like cheating; after all, Firaxis may have intended them to suck. :p

I doubt they even thought of the 8-Pillage-Exploit. :crazyeye:

It wasn't an exploit; it was supposed to be the ultimate pillager.

Not really, they would resist attacking armies, but they become plump targets for bombers and (possibly) MAs and Tanks.

the AI will occasionally take pop shots with whatever artillery they have handy. if will get to a point where the AI will attack the army regardless.

Hmph; sounds ahistorical. The Conquistadors were about conquest and plunder, not scorched earth policy as such.

It was also meant for attacking enemies lower tech than you.

Sure, but this leads to: Better player=> Higher Level=> Stronger Enemies=> Ever more useless Conquistadors.
