Let's play a game.

I've got an idea for a community game that folks may be interested in. I propose that we establish a game where players incorporate elements of a somewhat silly hypothetical, preferably based on pop culture references, into their everyday lives. The idea is that payers would propose, in all seriousness, hypotheticals that are pretty clearly based on some sort of pop culture reference to the people they interact with on a professional, or academic, basis. Players report, in this thread, the hypothetical they provided and how people reacted to it. I would recommend that, whenever possible, the hypothetical be as serious and as deadpan as possible and be a relevant item to the issue at hand.

The whole community can play along and have fun.

Suggested (draft) rules:
  1. The topic is provided by the winner of last week's contest.
  2. The hypothetical should be proposed in someone's "work" life, whether that be actual work or academic environment. No fair proposing it to your drinking buddies.
  3. Players post their experience with proposing the hypothetical throughout the week.
  4. At the end of the week (say, Saturday) last week's winner picks a winner for this week.
  5. This week's winner provides a new reference from which to draw hypotheticals from by Monday morning.
  6. Last week's winner should be encouraged to post their own experiences with proposing the hypothetical in question to one's colleagues, but no fair naming yourself as the winner.

Do those rules make sense to anyone else? Please feel free to provide commentary to the rules and i will edit them to make them make more sense.

Example:

Hypothetical element: The rug in The Big Lebowski.

My hypothetical: "In torts class, we were talking about destruction of property. In general, damages can only be obtained for the fair market value of a piece of property, but I asked if that could be modified if the piece of property was part of a set of some sort, like a panel in a triptych or a rug that 'really ties the room together.'"

Would folks play and enjoy this game?

To get you started, why don't we make the first topic be that rug in The Big Lebowski. Try to get others to contemplate a hypothetical that, in some way, makes people consider the rug and post your experience.

For this first round, I'd like to exercise my prerogative as initiator of the game and extend it until the 22nd so folks can get in the swing of things.
