The stupid intro vid!

Because that FORCES people to watch the same cheezy video over and over and over (or at least the amount of it that plays before the game loads). If you like the intro it doesn't matter; if you don't then you're stuck! As opposed to a progress bar, which isn't subject to people's opinions on how much they like it. A progress bar also tells you how much of the game has loaded and how much is yet to be loaded.

If you don't like the video ... uh, don't watch it? Look somewhere else or count sheep or something? I don't really like the video myself, but it's just a loading screen, I'm not going to get hung up on it.

The movie is part of the loading screen, wait 15 seconds and press escape ONCE to get past the video. I mean not being able to wait for 15 seconds means your ADD medication is NOT working.

Well how many loads on your PC did it take you to figure out how long anyone else has to wait on their PC? Or what someone else considers a lot cumulative time spent waiting to skip the intro movie.

If i try to skip the intro the game crashes, it's only me?
So it's really impossible to skip or it's just my problem?

Move along.
Moderator Action: Accusations of being a troll are seen as trolling itself.
Do you know what you've done?

I've tried to check what's this boxxy thing you're mentioning and... I've spent four hours reading about the stuff on Encyclopedia Dramatica, reading about fourchan, watching youtube remix of boxxy - that way I got into Ratatat and started watching them - you've derailed my whole evening!

"You bastard!"

Can we talk about how stupid the video itself is for a second? For one thing, they obviously have the same voice actor for the tribal elder/chief/whatever that does the game narration, which messes with my head. More importantly, who are these people??? They're living in teepees, so I guess they're supposed to be american indians, but then the younger guy comes in looking totally different- arabic maybe? And then it shows the "visions of the future" which is all western history. It's like some horrible mashup of of national racial cliches.

I understand the whole game-loading thing, but my problem with the video is it lacks grandeur. I want to feel a sense of awe as I watch what my civilization could acheive. I want spendour, pomp, kings, flowing banners, buildings and wonders of the world rising from the ground and airplanes soaring through the sky. I want a video that fills me with a dream of adventure and hints at a fabulous game to come, not just a bunch of people camping by a river.

Well, goody for you! Now, can someone tell me (because I'm quite dumb, I'm afraid) what's wrong with putting a video as a loading screen?

It's fundamentally bad UI design as it doesn't give the user any information about the fact that the system is busy, how much longer the system is likely to be busy and about how and when the user can interact by the system.

By all means show a movie while the game loads, but you should also show a loading indicator, preferably also some kind of progress estimate and, above all, let the user know when the loading has finished and he can interact with the system again. Anything else is just shoddy workmanship.

Even a message "Please wait..." after a key or mouse button is pressed would have been nice. As it is, people get frustrated clicking buttons and keys repeatedly, not realising the game has already accepted their input and is just waiting for the game to load. Then they learn that the video is actually just playing while the game loads, but it doesn't make them feel better.

Why would you wait 15 seconds?
You can press escape as soon as the first logo appears (I don't remember, is it 2K or GameSpy?), you don't have to wait for anything.

Btw to the topic - I don't have problems with the video because I'm lucky enough to usually see only the hole in the "ceiling". Only rarely I get to see the elder and my Windows would have to be downloading some updates or something like that to make me hear him talking.

Exactly. Its hard to believe how blind [most] people on here seem to be in relation to usability or acceptable software design.
