The Tribal Elders of Delphi

I've got nothing more.

((Oh, I thought you were good to go.

If you can wait another ten hours I'll see if I can find anything else to advise. Otherwise, play on! :D))

((Not to harp on with the colossus, but after looking at the save the only thing that jumps out at me is that if we did build a colossus, we gain an additional trade route for anywhere (including land route, if we decommission the cargo ship), and also the cargo ship can be relocated (by clicking 'change base city' or 'host city' or whatever), so if we wanted a cargo ship for trade with the Shoshone we could.

That's all I've got. On with the game! :D))

Melodas stood to address the Delphian Council.

"With the conquered Siamese now pacified, and for the moment the retention of their own government --- albeit ultimately reporting to us --- I am wondering if we ought to perhaps formalise the existing arrangements, at least until new arrangements are made.

"To this end, I would like to propose that the Siamese, while maintaining their own native government, formally accept King Bazil as their rightful king by entering into a personal union with the Delphian Kingdom through the sharing of one single ruler. This would formalise the existing arrangements and reflect the reality of the situation in a neat and tidy way.

"I would therefore propose, with the King's consent, that we change his title from 'King of the Delphians' to 'King of the Delphians and the Siamese', while retaining the Delphian Kingdom and Kingdom of Siam as separate administrative entities."

He looked around the room at the assembled councillors.

"What say you?"

Enyseis stroked his white beard slowly and cleared his throat. "Hmm...yes Minister Melodas, you raise a good point. At this very moment many of the Siamese are still in rebellion against the authority of their new king. A new tile would reinforce the reality and the permanence of their situation. But I object to the implication that King Bazil rule over the Delphians and the Siamese as equals. The Siamese rebels must be made to know that Siam is finished. Its achievements, such as they were, belong to the past and those that fight to restore its authority waste their efforts. The Siamese can achieve prosperity greater than any nation has yet known only by joining their efforts to ours. They can raise themselves only by raising our nation and our King, who is their emperor. I ask Minister Melodas to make a small but important adjustment to his proposition and hail King Bazil as King of the Delphians and Emperor over the Siamese."

I think surely the fact that they now answer to a Delphian king and pay taxes to Delphi Nova makes it clear and obvious to the Siamese that the old ways are done with.

My grandfather, and my late father both hated the Siamese with a passion that I will never understand.

Surely the fact that they are defeated and have been brought under Delphian dominance is enough.

Why torment them further by insisting on their inferiority?

As the Council has reached an impasse on this issue, I ask the King to adjudicate, especially given that it relates to the style he himself will be adopting.

((Actually, on the subject of styles and so forth, there's an awesome mod I've come across called 'Civ Names by Policy', which changes the longform name of each civilisation and city-state and the title of their ruler based upon a number of factors (including what policies they've enacted, how many puppeted cities they have, how many city-state allies they have, how many troops they have, and even for city-states who they're vassals of and so forth).

I plugged in the Delphian savegames that I already had on hand (ranging from turn 80 to now) for curiosity's sake and it yielded the following (which I think is pretty cool):

Delphi > Kingdom of Delphi (King)
Kingdom of Siam (King)
Shoshone Republic (Consul)
Chinese Chiefdom (Chieftess) > Despotate of China (Despotess)
Dutch Chiefdom (Chief) > Dutch Priestdom (High Priest) > Dutch Protestant Order (Grand Master)
Republic of Poland (Consul) > Polish Catholic Order (Grand Master)
Quebec City
Zurich > Zurich Chiefdom > Zurich
Kingdom of Milan > City-State of Milan
Despotate of Almaty
Kingdom of Zanzibar > City-State of Zanzibar
))

Very cool. I would be curious how these titles change as the game progressses.

((I'll look into the mod and see how to apply it. I'll do so in the next save.

In the meantime, last week I had a week of 10h a day of VMware training and was way too tired to game. I'll play it still today and upload what I can. As you've seen before, basic description and save first, and I'll turn the description into story after ;)

Just so you know, this will probably happen between 19.00 and 21.00 GMT. That reminds me, which timezones are you on? I'd like to try to use the clock code to try to do some time previews :P))

THe Siamese are gone as a nation, and while they still resist, this will surely change int time. Since we want to grow and prosper, I doubt the Siamese people would refuse that opportunity.

I'm also sure they would still prefer to be autonomous for now, and I have no desire to brin all of their debts and internal wars into Delphi right now, it would surely be more than we can chew. I would propose that we use Melodas proposal of a personal union until the end of my ruling, and after those few years, we can review that. That way, the Siamese people can have time to solve their internal issues and we can focus on what truely matters: rebuilding the kingdom.

((I'm not sure I understand the question. But if I have . . .

mrkingkong created this scenario on 20 March 2014 (source: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=522945 ).

He created it as a democracy game, where a player is ruler for ten to twenty turns and then retires, and the players in the forum thread vote on who will play the next ten to twenty turns.

We are currently up to turn 145, in the Late Middle Ages, and King Bazil is the current ruler.))

((I know this has already progressed into the Middle Ages and all, but is there room for a new player to join? This seems like a fun game! :)))

((There is always room for more people IMHO. Unless someone objects something, welcome aboard. If you need any help or catch up, just tell us and we'll do what we can))

EDIT: ((checked the mod, pretty nifty. I might make a run with it, worst case, I can simply repeat it after if needed.))

((I've had a brief look at the last turnsets, and at the latest save, so I think I'm up to speed with what's going on game-wise. Might have to read up on some of your stories though but I think I've read enough to introduce my character at least! Oh, and I must say this: nice move to use Buddhism as base for Hellenism because now there won't be an AI founding it just because they couldn't have their favourite...))

It was a festive day in Delphi Nova because of the Siamese visitors that came from the north. Many were astounded to see her, riding in on an elephant with a big smile on her face waving to the people in the streets. It was hard to believe but this cheerful energetic lady was in fact over 60 years old. She was Queen Sueang, mother of Ramkhamhaeng, former King of Siam. Along with her grandson and a Siamese guard who were riding on another elephant behind her, she paraded through the city until they reached the Delphi Nova shrine, where she dismounted with ease and walked in.

It had been well-known at the Siamese court that the Queen Mother was immersed in Hellenic rites and Delphian religious traditons. When the news of the Siamese surrender to Delphian forces reached the Royal Palace on that dark day years ago most of the royal household had decided to take their own lives, but to no surprise Sueang welcomed the outsiders and when the Delphian general entered the palace in Sukhothai she and her grandson Loethai had been the only living people in the building.

Sueang was thrilled to finally be standing in a shrine dedicated to the gods she had worshipped for so long. With her she had brought an ancient Siamese crown jewel, the Gemstone of Muang Saluang, which she left there as a sacrifice before walking out again. She looked Loethai in the eyes, smiled, and said in her lovely Siamese Greek accent: "Let's go, my Cêā, I don't want to miss my audience with the King of Delphians."

((I thought perhaps my character, the Queen Mother, could help bring unity to the Delphian and Siamese kingdoms considering her Siamese background but great respect for Delphian culture and adherence to the Hellenic faith. Plus, it gives me an excuse to not know all about the intrigues surrounding the Delphian court. ;)))

((Incoming turnset, I'll re-write it until tomorrow, but you can check the save and status right now))

Story
=======================

The arrival of the Queen Mother was unexpected, but not undesirable. If the people were to be unified at some point, we needed to show that they could work together. And who better to do so than the Siamese that gathered more acceptance? Still, it would still take time for them to be accepted, so this would have to be managed carefully.

King Bazil observed her ostentatious entrance and wondered how different she was from her son. Perhaps he should've taken more from that liveliness, and less from the shaddy statecraft. But today was not a day to think about that. Her arrival would surely help the people to forget about all the bad days, at least for a while. That would give him some time to be with his family in the meantime.

Turn 6 - Game Turn 146 // 720 AD

Fishermen talk about strange islands in the southern area of Khirra. Maybe it's nothing, but we'll have to investigate it in the future, maybe it holds some secrets.

A general arrived in the city bringing news from the western side. He tells of the new troop moves, and how the barbarian are being handled. While tactics are not my area, it seems to work pretty well.

The following day to the arrival of the Queen Mother, a small meeting was arranged for formal introductions. A very lively woman full of energy, I wonder if I'll be able to be like that when I'm older... The afternoon runs late as we discuss the latest project our workers have started, the great roads connecting both sides of the Kingdom. She smiles sayng that such a project would've been very useful on her travel to the city. I tell her that it will be useful when I decide to meet her in her palace. She seemed pleased with the idea and left after one hour of what she plans to do when the day arrives. I swear I don't know where she gets all the energy.

Dostana's population could use some more food, so a few changes were done in the social structure to reflect this. It seems to have please them, I haven't seen so many miners happy to go back into their old lifes.
((> Change in Dostana (@Melda), a miner goes to fish, and a citizen that was working plains went to Pearls.))

Turn 7 - Game Turn 147 // 740 AD

A great monument has been finished finally. A grand festival is held to celebrate the achievement. The architect has named this wonderful piece of architecture and art "Notre Dame". Sueang's ideas about the celebration seem to have been well received, and the population's mood has largely improved. Long seem to be the days of unhappiness, and rebuilding seems to be well on the way.

Speaking of rebuilding, we can't ignore our coffers, so a new Caravan started being prepared.

One of the latest reports from the north reveals a bit more about Poland's territory. Nothing too useful as of now, but we must keep pressing.

One of the war units has been having issues as their warriors are in a constant unrest state due to being stationed. I guess that war can take a toll on your ability to stand around... I order them to check the south of Delphi, as this seems to have been an issue in the council as of late. That should appease them both.

Turn 8 - Game Turn 148 // 760 AD

The great road project's first part is finished, and new trade routes are immediately established. There's a great curiosity between the populations. Gold influx more than doubles, from 11 to 24, which is amazing! Later that year, a new cargo route is established with Quebec, almost tripling from the original influx, to 30 gold. Gold won't be an issue in the following years it seems.

The population's social structure was reviewed to better suit the current needs. Delphi gets more food and Dostana gets more production as it's more beneficial.

((> Slight Change in Delphi (@Melda), a miner has been changed into a farmer , now we're growing well there and we haven't lost any turn producing a caravan

> Change in Dostana (@Melda), realize that I can add two turns growth and cut two turns production by changing pearl fisher for a miner again, which puts me in 5 turns for growth and 5 turns for a fishing boat, which sounds very synced for my tastes ;) ))

The latest reports from the south of the capital have been discussed in council, and the area is looking clear of troubles. That seems to appease most of the council, but some still seem not to trust these reports. We will see who's right in the future.

Turn 9 - Game Turn 149 // 780 AD

Some months after, the reports are that the south area is completely clear of barbarian forces. Still not enough to some, but it's good enough for me. I leave orders for the unit to check the area, as I believe that stationing them again will just bring unrest in that unit. On that same topic, our generals have been discussing the western strategy as chinese scouts are seen near the fighting areas. It's best not to let them pillage the remains of the barbarians, we don't want them gaining an advantage at our costs.

Turn 10 - Game Turn 150 // 800 AD

One of the great travelers of our world, name Ptolemy "the lonely" has visited our capital. he provided us with his latest findings in general production of the known countries, which worries me. According to his finding, China and Poland are 33% faster than us when it comes to building and training.

A small contract for general improvements on the kingdom is signed, which will provide a new farmable area near Delphi, and a needed mine near Khirra. During negotiations for Delphi's new caravan some harsh news are received during conversations. The scientists that arrived with traders seemed to mention us losing 2-4 in technological knowledge for Netherlands, and a terrible 2-6 from the Shoshone. Go for Zurich as I want them getting our religion and we still get some decent gold.

Since there's nothing that money can't solve, a new Market area is commissioned in Delphi. Unfortunately our last standing deal with Poland seems to have fallen, which means that we're alone when it comes to the greater nations. This worries me, I do not wish to face them all in the future.

To the council, I ask for their opinions on what route should we follow in Delphi. It seems to me that boats and Lighthouses in Dostana and Khirra are the way for now, but what about our great capital?

((I thought perhaps my character, the Queen Mother, could help bring unity to the Delphian and Siamese kingdoms

((That should ruffle the Council's feathers somewhat!

New players are always welcome. :D))

It was night in Delphi Nova. Queen Sueang was in the city on one of her occasional visits, and slept soundly in her bed when she suddenly woke up. She had fear in her eyes and got dressed quickly in the simple clothes she often used to wear to look just like any other common Delphian in the streets - she liked not being recognised here, back in Siam everyone knows who she is. Not that many were out this late but this just couldn't wait.

On her way out she couldn't think of anything but her mysterious dream, while walking as fast as she possibly could - considering her age - to the holy shrine. None of the priests were there but she knew of a hidden side door she could use. The Queen Mother often had trouble sleeping when away from home and nothing helped her like a moment for herself in the shrine, in presence of her gods.

It was morning already when the High Priest entered the shrine, finding the old woman sitting on her knees silent. He walked towards her to see if she was okay when Sueang suddenly shouted: "Apollonia!"

Later that day the Council met with the King to discuss the current state of the Delphian Kingdom. While an honored guest, Sueang was not there in person as she had no position in the Council. The King was just about to begin when a guard came through the doors. "There is a letter for you, my King. It is from Her Royal Highness Queen Sueang, she says it is of utmost importance."

Queen Sueang greets King Bazil of the Delphians!

I have seen visions of the future, of death and destruction but also of life and happiness. Last night the great God of Gods - our Apollo of Delphi came to me in my sleep and showed me the fate of your Delphian settlers in the west. A great city to be built in honour of our gods. A city possibly even greater than Delphi Nova herself. In order to bring good fortune to the Delphians and the Siamese for years to come, I urge you and the Council to send words to your settlers that when they are ready to do so they shall found the westernmost city of Delphi and name it
Apollonia after our great god Apollo. May his kingdom forever reach from the Eastern to the Western Ocean, from sunrise to sunset, for eternity.

It is also my belief that this kingdom needs unity - Siam and Delphi must become one if the people are to see you as their true ruler. My humble suggestion is that you let a Siamese representative join your Majesty's Council so that also my people can feel represented in the government of our land.

I will be travelling back to Sukhothai tonight but hope to see you again soon. Until then: dūlæ tạw xeng læa rạks̄ʹā s̄uk̄hp̣hāph d̂wy na khrạb!

((And before you say anything, yes I know that the Settler is just standing there waiting for now.))

((Edit: updated the story a little after reading Bazil's finished log.))
