The Triumph(?) of the Boers: Yet another AoI Story.

Just finished reading through the whole story. Am now very tempted to go and start playing AoI again.:D
Though I must say, a South African nation expanding dramatically, conquering most of Africa and eventually Europe.... Your Boer Republic seems like a nice version of the Draka.:p

Geez... the Russians and Japanese should REALLY just create an independent Manchuria that they can jointly rule... <__<;

Excellent progress though! I dunno if Russia'll take it kindly you've re-created the Byzantines and thus taken away their title as the Third Rome... Or the Ottomans for usurping their title as Roman Emperors. ;)

It's neat to see Germany gobbling up Russia... A-H should be happy they're allies!

My last comment? JUST DIE ALREADY BRITAIN!!!

Haahaa, "hot potato" with Mukden... let's hope the Japanese can actually carve Russia up a tad, hmm? ;)

Excellent progress! Once Greece falls, I'd hate to be the other powers you'll be picking off. Will you be considering short hostilities against Spain once the Ottomans are gone for the sake of Belgrade? Great Yugoslavia and all that. ;)

Actually, that's one of my more long-range plans, however, I'm actually planning a short war with Russia to take everything between Germany's current holdings and my Balkan holdings... I checked with my spies and they reported that Bukharest only has THREE units defending it: A home Guard, a Russian Maxim MG and a Cossack  If Russia hadn't declared peace with Germany when it did, it would have likely lost that whole territory... Not to mention that the Russian military, according to my adviser is "weak" compared to ours.

After consolidating my European holdings, I'm going to launch "Operation Desert Storm" and "Operation Desert Fox" to drive the British out of Africa and the Mid-East.

Poor Britannia... slowly being eclipsed in world affairs by the upstart Boers... :mischief: Well, at least their African Empire will be replaced by their Asian Empire... except, oh wait... they don't have any secure shipping lanes, West or East, from Asia! The British will lose lots of money in any war with you from now on! :) Heck, at the rate things are going, the British might as well dissolve their empire and form a Commonwealth/Confederation composed of Asian-Australian states!

Well, that IS the plan.... :mischief:

And another thing, on the "first African nation to take European soil" thing; I hate to be a jackass about this, but technically wouldn't the Carthaginians(though as descendents of Phoenicia, they could've been Asian more than African...) have been the first? Unless you mean in the modern age of course! In which case, the Scramble for Europe, is about to begin!

Actually, the Phoenicians are Middle-Eastern... their original territories are what is now Lebanon and parts of Syria and Turkey (Sidon, Tyre, etc), but I guess you're tecnically right, since the Boers are also of originally non-African stock as well....

Scramble for Europe! I like that! :D

I'll be watching your progress eagerly, Führer Takayama!

Actually the word you're looking for is "Aanvoerder" (commander) :D

This Page has been a big help with coming up with names for things (i.e. if you take apart my Foreign Ministers name, you'll find that Sleg = "bad" and mond = "mouth", i.e. Foreign Minister Badmouth :D)

Edit: Well dang, you updated again already! I'll comment on that after I'm done reading. ;)

I'm sneaky like that :ninja:

.....

I'll take that as a compliment, even though the Draka (at least acording to Wikipedia) are about as bad as the "Triumvirate of the Strong" in your story. :p

Let them be upset... If they have any problems with it, they can take it up with my armored cars! :p BTW, latest intel on the British military indicates that they have 1 Armored car division... By the end of the next two turns, I'll have THREE! :D

As for the Ottomans, they won't last long enough to be TOO upset about it.

THEY won't be spared due to having some 2-tile island city with two freaking infantry units blockading it.

.....I'll take that as a compliment, even though the Draka (at least acording to Wikipedia) are about as bad as the "Triumvirate of the Strong" in your story. :p

That's why I said a nice version. Instead of going around enslaving everything in site, you're going around being nice to people and granting them freedom. It's probably confusing all those folk your conquering.

Reading the Draka books was... interesting. I would have to put them down at times to shudder at their cruelty and feel like taking a bath to wash the evil off. Nasty indeed!

Elsewhere, Loerenzo Maarkes launches an Early DD, the FRS Tubaman
I'm a ship! :woohoo::D

I'm a ship! :woohoo::D

Yeah, I'm trying to keep up certain Navy traditions....

I.e. all my Cruisers are named after Land-locked cities (the US Navy names Cruisers after land battles, i.e. USS Cowpens, USS Gettysburg, etc), all my Coastal Defense Gunboats after Coastal Cities (Loerenzo Maarkes, Port Elizabeth, etc), and Destroyers after famous people.

When I ran out of military characters in my story (President Kruger, Hikaro Takayama, etc), I started naming them after AoI scenario design team members (El Justo, Klyden, Adler XVII {Adler17}, and Seven Ronin {7ronin}), after which I started grabbing names of people who responded to this thread (Tanicius Fox, Redman, etc)

When I can finally get submarines, I'll name them after ocean-going predators (Shark, Barracuda, etc) and when I can FINALLY start building Coastal Battleships, I'll name them after states and sovereign republics in the Boer Federal Republic (much like the US Navy does); I.e. FRS Transvaal, FRS Orange Free State, FRS Namibia, etc....

Bangwela launches another Early DD, the FRS Tanicius Fox, which is sent to patrol the West Coast.

...Well I'll be danged!

I had missed that, but after reading how you named ships after posters, I had no choice but to check myself... sure enough, I found it!

It's an honor to serve the Great Boer Federation's rise to power! :) What am I, Chief Cartographer and former Navy Critic from Hell?

No, you're a key military analyst/commentator on the war efforts.... I was kind of inspired to do this by TupacLives naming armies/MGLs he pops after people who posted in his thread. ;)

BTW, I forgot to mention that one of the goals of "Operation Desert Fox" will be to inaugurate the Dakar Off-Road Rally in grand style! ....The Route will be from Alexandria, through Benghazi, Agades, Timbuktu, Bombaka and then on to Dakar. :D

BTW, I still find it hard to believe you've almost accomplished what I have in your German story about 10 game years ahead of me... I must be slacking, or something.

I have a ship named after me? How? Oh well. Don't let the little bugger sink. I won't be happy. Good job, taking the Balkans that quickly. :goodjob:

Well, Marius and Hikaro Takayama are alike... seeming to randomly pop up at different times and places and lead countries to glory... :mischief:

Good luck pwning Britain a second time!

Well, there's SEVERAL logical reasons behind my easy string of victories. ;)

A. Germany starts off with a larger empire than the Boers.

B. Germany, overall, has far better troops than the Boers. (Thankfully the colonial troops are weaker, or it may have been near-impossible for you to capture Namibia!)

C. Military alliances were available to the Great Powers at the start of my modified version, hence Operation: Asswhooping's effectiveness on Britain.

D. Germany starts with a few extra cavalry in my version, to simulate it's position as the strongest in Europe at the time. These troops explain the easy overrun victories in the Netherlands and some of Scandinavia; Russia's stacks of Cossack Doom, however, easily balance it out.

E. Numerous changes that have affected gameplay a tad(some attack/defense values have shifted(though the huge casualties the Battle of Liverpool will show will tell you I didn't give myself a huge advantage), while troop-spawning for the lovely Naval Infantry happens more rapidly, etc.)

Overall, however, I attribute it to how Germany already starts off fairly potent and with the units to match that potency. The Boers start off weak and their units can be fairly subpar until you start getting machineguns and a few extra cities. ;)

I wish us both luck on our respective campaigns!

Chapter 15: Operation Manzikert
Part I: The Shots Heard Around the World

It is currently the middle of April, 1908, and Veld Marschall Hikaro Takayama is in the "Special Room" in the presidential palace of Pretoria, talking to special agent "Elena."

"Elena, this is Flying Ace," he says into the handset, "What is the make-up of the Ottoman forces stationed in Antalya, over?"

"Sir, there are three Ottoman Maxim Machinegun Battalions, five companies of Ottoman Infantry and a single Turkish Cavalry company garrisoned in the city, over," Elena replies.

"Copy that, Elena, Flying Ace over and out!" Hikaro places the handset back onto the radio's hook switch and takes the latest report to the President and Defense Minister Voorhees.

The President, after seeing the report says, "Great work, Veld Marschall! We may be able to take Antalya this week!"

So it was that General Veers and Admiral Tromp got orders to begin the assault on Antalya. The upgraded Pretoria Battle Group actually manages to score several successful hits on Maxim MG bunkers around the city, while the 7.5cm GebK Mountain guns' massive follow-up bombardment reduces all the remaining defenders to less than 1/4 strength. (15 hits, baby!)

As soon as the guns fall silent, three Commando companies along with an elite Boer Light Cavalry company and a veteran Boer Rifle company surge forwards. The three Commando Companies wipe out all three Ottoman Maxim MG battalions, then go on to attack an Ottoman Infantry and two Home Guard companies. One of the veteran Commando companies is wiped out by the Ottoman Infantry, but the other two Commandos take them out, along with both Home Guard Companies.

The veteran Boer Rifle company sustains almost 50% casualties, but they manage to wipe out one of the few remaining Ottoman Infantry companies. Meanwhile, the elite Light Cavalry company takes out the last Ottoman Infantry company as well as the badly-mauled Turkish Cavalry company, capturing Antalya along with the Yivli Minare Mosque (another 1 happiness wonder)!

This victory makes the front-page headlines on every newspaper around the world: While this isn't the first city belonging to a major colonial power to fall to one of the minor powers, this IS the first HOME CITY of a major colonial power to fall to a third-world upstart. Even the famous British "stiff upper lip" has begun to twitch a bit..

All the remaining artillery that was still loaded up and ready is shipped to the outskirts of Angora, where they bombard the city and hit military targets with four of their salvos. (That ought to give an idea of the absolutely SICK amount of artillery I have in Turkey!)

Meanwhile, Cape Town launches the Armored Cruiser, FRS El Obeid, which sets course for the Horn of Africa (the ships in that region will be playing a major role in the up-coming "Operation Desert Fox" and "Operation Desert Storm" :D ). Reinforcements for "Operation Manzikert" and Raw Materials also continue to be loaded onto Steam Transports at Alexandria for shipment to Turkey Anatolia and the Byzantium Provisional State.

Elsewhere, military campaigns during the last week of April and the first week of May see Britain capture Lanzhou in China, and Russia re-taking Ashgabat from Persia.

During the second week of May, 1908, the Byzantine cities of Thesalonica, Athens and Pristina produce the Boer Federal Republic's first three "Gepantser Groepeer" of Renault Armored cars, which are loaded onto transports in Athens and shipped to Anatolia to participate in the liquidation of the Ottoman "Empire."

Special agent "Rude's" report from Angora reveal the city is defended by only four Ottoman Maxim MG Battalions and two Horse Artillery batteries. Special agent "Reno's" report from Constantinople indicates that it is defended by a whopping four Ottoman Maxim MG Battalions, one ELITE City Guard company, and eight companies of Ottoman Infantry! Good thing we have enough artillery to knock them back a good bit, not to mention that the three Armored Car "Gepantser Groepeer" should help make short work of them! (Note: Is it just me, or does the Afrikaans version of "Panzer Gruppen" sound like something horribly perverted? )

Meanwhile, General Veers' artillery blasts Angora, reducing all four Maxim MG battalions to 1/4th strength! General Sephiroth van Niebelheim's 1st Light Horse division, a Renault Armored Car Gepantser Groep and two Commando companies charge headlong into the city. One of the Commando companies is mowed down by Ottoman machineguns, but the Renault Gepantser Groep and the other Commando company wipe out two of the Ottoman Maxim MG battalions, suffering only light casualties in the process. The 1st Light Horse only sustains about 30% casualties mopping up the last two Maxim MG battalions and the city is ours!

We capture the Angora Citadel (Wonder that makes 1 person happy and doubles city def) along with two Ottoman Horse Artillery Batteries. The Horse Artillery batteries are loaded onto transports at Antalya and shipped to Alexandria for upgrade into Field Guns.

General Veers begins moving his artillery and all full strength companies (including two Renault Gepantser Groepeer) into the hills outside Constantinople. He then orders all ready artillery pieces to bombard the city, landing eight salvos on the defending forces. The Pretoria Battle group moves into Constantinople's harbor and starts lobbing 5" and 8" shells into the city, destroying Constantinople's Coastal Fortress and Naval Base.

Elsewhere in the Republic, around 30 more tons of Raw Materials are sold off in Athens, making the grand total 111 to date. Bangwela launches an Armored Cruiser, the FRS Bloemfontein, which gets under way to join the Kilwa Battle Group holding station off the coast of Douala. Dar Es Salaam launches an Early DD, the FRS Jason Voorhees II, which sets sail for the Mediterranean (it is intended to replace the original Jason Voorhees, thereby proving that Jason will ALWAYS be back! :D ) Moezambiek launches another Armored Cruiser, the FRS Port Franqui, which sets course for the Horn of Africa.

Meanwhile, our Civil Engineer teams extend the rail link to Kongolo... hopefully we'll have it all the way out to Douala by the time we launch "Operation Desert Fox"...

The Ottomans sign a peace treaty with Spain during the last week of May, in a desperate attempt to forestall their impending doom... Sorry guys, but nothing can save you now!

After a long, back-and-forth war in Africa, which sees Britain losing control of Sardinia, Britain and France sign a peace treaty. Foreign Minister Slegmond's announcement that Brazil has dragged Portugal into an alliance against the Balkans has the entire cabinet rolling on the floor laughing... Yes, we have the world's two most pathetic 1-city island nations, who are only surviving because the only landing points on their 2-tile islands are blocked by neutral troops, at war with each other!

The news that the USA has signed Russia on in an alliance against China sobers things down quite a bit.. It would seem that China is quite truly doomed! (Well, if Russia and Japan can ever settle their endless dispute over Manchuria, that is  ) Russia then turns around and convinces the Spanish to declare war on Japan!

Meanwhile, the Ottomans move two companies of Ottoman Infantry into the forests outside Antalya....

And so it is, with the Ottoman Empire rapidly crumbling, that this part of "Operation Manzikert" comes to a VERY successful close. :D

Can I have a ship named after me?

this IS the first HOME CITY of a major colonial power to fall to a third-world upstart
How does Athens not qualify as a home city? Is that a special title certain cities get in this mod?

Can I have a ship named after me?

Just be patient, you're turn will come. ;) (Probably sooner than you expect, too!)

@ Tubaman: The Balkans are one of the MINOR powers, such as Mexico, Central America, the Boer Republics, etc...

The OTTOMANS, on the other hand, are one of the "Big 12" COLONIAL POWERS... I.e. the factions that can build improvements that auto-produce flag units, start the game with a gadzillion units and (in most cases) their own pre-set overseas Empire (in other words, Britain, Germany, the US, Austria, Italy, Russia, Japan, the Ottoman Empire, Spain, France, the Lowland Countries, and Portugal).

And even though some of the home cities of the Major Powers (i.e. Lisbon, Porto, Brussels, etc) HAVE been captured by other nations, NONE of them (unless you want to include some of Russia's hinterland being snagged by Persia off-and-on) have been taken by anyone BUT another Major Power.

I anticipate the next update will be the Ottomans getting bad karma in Constantinople? :mischief:

Chapter 15: Operation Manzikert
Part II: Constantinople (Not Istanbul)

Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks Boers
-They Might Be Giants (corrected to reflect the current reality :D )

Dr. Frankenstein, the Science Adviser comes waltzing into the President's office during the first week of June, 1908 to announce that we've completed research into "Colonial Admin V."

attachment.php

President Kruger, in another planning session with Veld Marschall Takayama and Defense Minister Voorhees, looks up and says, "Good job, Victor, now please get your research team to look into 'Howitzers III'."

Victor says, "At, once sir... I'll have Igor start rounding them up right away," and leaves.

The President then looks at Veld Marschall Takayama and says, "Now what was it you said your spies told you again, Hikaro?"

"Well, Mr. President," Hikaro replies, "They say that Trabzon only has two Ottoman Maxim MG battalions defending it, along with a single company each of Ottoman Infantry, Turkish Cavalry and Home Guards! If we can conquer Constantinople this week, I predict that we can completely eliminate the Ottoman Empire by the end of the month!"

"Good work, Hikaro," the President replies, "Serves the bastards right for declaring war on us! Anything else?"

Defense Minister Voorhees says, "We've finished re-building the Naval Academy in Kerkyra, Mr. President.... We'll eventually get some Naval Infantry companies out of it and finally be able to either drive the Italians off of Crete and land our forces or take Iraklion directly from the sea."

"Good work, men! See to your duties!"

Defense Minister Voorhees and Veld Marschall Takayama salute and then depart to begin issuing orders, via radio, to the troops and ships outside Constantinople.

The Pretoria Battle group begins the show, landing four salvos on target, blasting gaps into the Ottoman's fortified Maxim MG positions. The 7.5cm GebK Mountain Gun batteries soon join in, and by the time the shelling stops, every single Ottoman unit defending Constantinople has been pounded into hamburger, with mere platoons left where companies once stood.

The assault to destroy the Ottoman Maxim MG nests is led by one of our Renault Gepantser Groepeer accompanied by three elite Commando companies and two veteran Commando companies. The Renault Armored Cars take out a battalion of Ottoman Maxim MGs without taking a single loss! A veteran and an elite Commando company are mowed down by the heavy machinegun fire coming from some of the old Byzantine fortifications, but the rest manage to wipe out the last three Ottoman Maxim MGs without too many losses.

In another section of town, another assault, also led by a Renault Armored Car Gepantser Groep, two regular Commando companies and an elite Light Cavalry company wipes out the elite City Guard company as well as four companies of Ottoman Infantry.

attachment.php

The city, along with the Hagia Sophia, another industrial center (Industrialization resource) and a third Export market (victory point) are ours! Constantinople is added to the Byzantium Provisional State, and is made the state Capitol.

The remaining artillery bombard the Ottoman Infantry threatening our stands of Quality Timber in the forests outside Antalya, and only manage to hit the offending Ottoman Infantry with two salvos. The slightly under-strength Renault Armored Car Gepantser Groep attacks and is destroyed in heavy fighting with the Ottoman Infantry  A slightly under-strenght veteran Commando company, on the other hand, defeats both of the Ottoman Infantry companies, and all the Greek conscripts from Thessalonica in the unit defect and join the Commando company, forming it into an elite unit.

The Pretoria Battle Group, along with General Veer's artillery and their defending Maxim MG battalion move into the hills outside Trabson for the final showdown with the Ottoman Empire.

Antalya is re-named Adalia, and it is incorporated, along with Angora, into the new Provisional State of Anatolia.

Domestic Minister Veldhuiser informs the president that Disease has struck Aswan, yet again! On a more positive note, Tanganyika's infrastructure is now developed enough to admit it as a full state. The Boer Federal Republic's political structure now looks like this:

Full States:

Transvaal
Orange Free State
Namibia
Commonwealth of the Cape of Good Hope
Zambia
Madagascar
Moezambiek
Tanganyika

Provisional States:

Kongo
Kameroon
Somalia
Egypt
Byzantium
Anatolia

Sovereign Republics:

Rep. of Swaziland
Sovereign Bantu Republic of Ndongo (Angola)
Rep. of Rwanda
Rep. of Kenya
Rep. of Nubia (Sudan & Ethiopia)

All captured Horse Artillery are unloaded at the port in Alexandria and shipped to Cairo by rail for upgrade into Field Guns. More troops and Raw Materials are loaded onto Steam Transports at Alexandria for shipment to Anatolia.

Elsewhere, Port Nolloth launches an Early DD, the FRS The Omega, which is named after one of General Sephiroth and Defense Minister Voorhees' protoges. The FRS The Omega sets course for the Kilwa Battle Group.

In order to prevent further border incidents with our ships trying to enter the Mediterranean through the Pillars of Hercules, as well as give us an additional path to hit British-held Lisbon easier when we launch "Operation Desert Fox," Foreign Minister Slegmond hammers out a Right of Passage agreement with Spain.

Sign RoP with Spain… We’ll use spain as a corridor to attack British-held Lisbon!

The middle of June sees the Spanish ambassador trying to get us to betray Persia (we have a RoP with Persia) and sign a military alliance against them... We politely decline. (Remember: You can't spell "ambassador" with an "ass" in there somewhere :p"

Brazil drags the Dutch into their war with Spain... Bye-Bye Netherlands! The Balkan Ambassador comes whinging about one of our Steam Transports in their coastal waters. Even though they should consider themselves EXTREMELY lucky to be alive right now, we apologize... Foreign Minister Slegmond notes that they "Fear our Renault Armored Car Gepantser Groepeer".... And well they should!

We also get word that the Dutch have pulled the Ottomans into their war with France! :rotfl: I don't think the French will have anything to worry about with THAT alliance!

Meanwhile, Portugal gets Russia to declare war on the US! China and Japan sign a peace treaty, hopefully allowing them both to concentrate on Britain....

The garrison commander in Khartoum reports seeing a full division of British Colonial Cavalry in the hills outside the city en route to attack Asmara... President Kruger is tempted to call up Queen Victoria and tell her to beat it, but Veld Marschall Takayama reminds him that we aren't ready to launch "Operation Desert Fox" just yet.....

Military action elsewhere sees Britain taking Lhasa from China! Furthermore, the AMERICANS take Jayapura in New Guinea from the Dutch! This is the first major overseas victory for the USA... Maybe we can get them to go to war with Britain when we launch "Operation Desert Fox"....

During the Final week of June, Defense Minister Voorhees reports that our first Naval Infantry company has graduated from the Naval Academy, but they are kept in reserve, for now.

The Battle of Trabzon begins soon after, with the Pretoria Battle Group pounding the city, destroying the Coastal Fortress and Trabzon Naval Academy in addition to sinking an Early DD and a Steam Transport in the harbor. The 7.5cm GebK Mountain Gun batteries drop eleven salvos on target, reducing all defenders to a single platoon each.

General Sephiroth's 1st Light Horse leads the attack, taking about 55% casualties in order to wipe out two Ottoman Maxim MG battalions and an Ottoman Infantry company. A Renault Gepantser Groep wipes out a Home Guard company without a single loss, and a veteran Light Cavalry company defeats the last Turkish Cavalry company and captures the city!

We find the Sultan and his family holed up in the Trabzon Castle, and "convince" him to cede complete control of Anatolia over to the Boer Federal Republic and abdicate his throne. A veteran Ottoman City Guard company stationed in the trenches outside the city, upon hearing of the Sutlan's abdication, immediately surrenders to General Sephiroth, and are allowed to peacefully return to their homes after signing an affidavit stating that they'll never take up arms against the Boer Federal Republic. After 700 years of trying to ram Islam down Europe's throat, the Ottomans have been wiped off the map!

attachment.php

For the first time, one of the Major Powers has been completely defeated, making the Boer Federal Republic the only country besides the United States to completely conquer another nation.

Trabzon is re-named Trebizond and made capitol of the Provisional State of Anatolia.

Elsewhere, Foreign Minister Slegmond signs a Right of Passage Agreement with Russia so we can move our army from Trebizond through Armenia (there won't be any Armenian Genocide in THIS universe!) into Germany's Caspian territories, through Germany proper into France, through France into Spain, across Spain and hit British-held Lisbon. :D He also presents Kaiser Wilhelm II with a gift of gold to ensure better relations and hopefully keep him from revoking our RoP with them. A Boer Rifle company tests this route out and is able to take the Orient Express all the way to the border with Lisbon!

In Africa, Rail links to Bangwela and Luanda are finished, linking the Sovereign Bantu Republic of Ndongo to our rail network. Half of General Veer's 7.5cm GebK Mountain Gun Batteries are loaded onto Steam Transports in Adalia for transport back to Africa in preparation for "Operation Desert Fox" Durban, Swaziland's busy seaport, launches an Early DD, the FRS Dumanios, which heads off for the Horn of Africa.

Special Agent "Solid Snake" carries out an investigation of Lisbon, revealing that it is only defended by two British Maxim MG battalions, once British Regular Infantry company and two companies of Home Guards... That city should easily fall, once "Operation Desert Fox" goes down!

At the beginning of July, Chile pulls poor, doomed China into its war with France and the US drags Italy into their war with France... Looks like it might be Napoleon all over again....

In military action near Khartoum, the garrison commander reports that the British somehow fail to take Asmara!

British colonial forces prove to be much more competent elsewhere, and Britain takes Kunming, reducing China to only four cities!

So it is, with the upstart Boers eliminating one of the Great Colonial Powers that Operation Manzikert and this chapter comes to a close.
