My speakers (which mom dropped and was too cheap to replace) were being stubborn and wouldn't stay on for more than a few seconds. The button kept popping out. I was using half a roll of scotch tape to keep it in place (it worked before when this thing was stubborn). But then it switched off every 5 seconds or so.

So I pulled out my spare speakers (which are also broken but work if you arrange them properly) and said to my speaker "if you don't behave, these ones are replacing you." (Don't ask, it's 5 am here.)

That was 5 minutes ago. It's still on.:lol:

I threatened to replace my speakers and it stopped misbehaving.

Never underestimate the power of threatening a piece of machinery/electronic equipment  it works :D

Id...get a new set of speakers. They're like 15$ for a cheap set. Maybe a little more for a decent 2.1 setup such as:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121014
(I know those are fairly decent. Not as nice as the Z2300 but definitely cheaper )

I'm planning to -- except they're really expensive here. I'm not paying 40 dollars for low-quality ones. I'm hoping to look in another store today where I've always gotten my speakers for decent price (15-20 dollars.)

Have you thought of making your own? I can find the drivers used in a standard IPod cradle for just a few dollars. You could glue or screw them into a small box with a little pillow stuffing.

If your current speaker are intermittent though, you probably just need to inspect the joints, maybe solder or push them on, and maybe test the wires along their length if you have a tester.

Yeah. I pulled out the speakers to inspect them, and found out one of the cables was wrapped in electrical tape, which I think is why it misbehaves. I don't hear anything rattling when I shake it, so I don't think there's anything loose. (The problem is that the on/off button won't stay down, so they keep switching off on me.)

I got them for 2 dollars at a yard sale. If I had the tools, I'd just open it up and replace the wire -- when the speaker is working properly it has great sound. (It's a Philips model MMS140 CS. I found this on a sticker on the bottom. Googling only has one result which isn't useful.)

Maybe I'll take it to school and see if they can do anything there in the workshops.

I told her not to, but mom went and opened it up and started hacking at it with a screwdriver. And destroyed it. :(
