As a military historian and someone who works for a living knowing things about military history, and past and present capabilities... I just want to say that you are completely wrong. :) They very much used their "wings" in combat, and Winged Hussars were constantly used in real combat for more than 120 years.

What did they use their wings for, exactly? I mean, they look awesome but surely they had a practical purpose of some kind?

I love the ability to "push" the enemy out of the way...I've used it quite effectively in my current game to knock enemies back and disrupt their ZOC or to push them back through rough terrain so they can't attack the next turn and my Hussar gets away.

Poland in general has become one of my favorites of the expansion. :)

Mostly looking awesome, I think. Some say the wings vibrated in the wind to create a disconcerting humming noise, but that lacks scientific credibility. Riding on horseback is quite rough; the feathers would be bouncing too much to create a resonance from wind drag. On the other hand, if the wings had been semi-flexible, they would bounce up and down in rhythm with the horse's gallop and would look like they are flapping. That would be damned cool and probably terrifying from the perspective of the target.

Yes, Poland was a super power. They saved Hungary from the Turks. They don't teach that in school around here.

It is completely true that Hungary and Poland were freindly nations for a long time, even before the turk, but the Poles did not have all that much to do with our war against the turks. Also "saved" is a really funny word to use anyways, as the ottomans pretty much had us at our balls for 150 years.

I've only played as Shoshone and Poland in BNW, but I can definitely see Poland being my go-to civ, because their UA SP bonuses are amazing. I like being able to tailor my civ through SP, and the fact that you get 7 free SPs throughout the game, make it that more customizable.

Oh... and I haven't even gotten to building WInged Hussars yet! :mischief::mischief::mischief:

Winged Hussar is a good unit, probably in the top 25% of UU's.

Even before Ducal Stable adds extra xp, it gets

1) Shock I for free
2) 3 extra combat strength
3) 1 extra movement
4) a unique ability to knock-back defending units, or do extra damage to units that can't retreat

With Ducal Stable and the Barracks-line of buildings, it can end up with a high-level promo as soon as built.

However, two things prevent the Winged Hussar from being a top-10% unit:

1) It's still a Lancer. Upgrading to Anti-Tank Gun makes a lot of its abilities irrelevant if the unit is quickly obsoleted by enemies.

2) It's still a non-ranged unit. The main use for mounted units in numerous strategies is simply to capture the city after ranged units have reduced it to zero. While this is a mounted unit with quite a kick and a lot more usefulness, it's still not a Keshik or Camel Archer.

My verdict: Somewhat powerful, but not exceptional. It's in the same vein as the German Panzer UU: if you are slightly ahead in techs, getting to this UU will be quite useful, but even then there's still issues: anti-tank guns for the Panzer, and the fact that pikes are still a reasonable opponent for the Winged Hussar when on the right terrain. Both the Winged Hussar and the Panzer are fast, mobile, and get extra strength and speed compared to the base unit, but are still limited in some ways, with the Winged Hussar being even more limited than the Panzer because of the upgrade path.

I think Hakkapelits are better when you have a GG. The push isnt always to your advantage. Dont like the lance line very much tbh.

I found having helicopter gunships with Heavy Charge to be rather interesting, though I wasn't able to make good use of them.

Winged Hussars weren't the first ones to use "wings". There were cavalry step people that used them before, in the belief that it made their horses faster (lol).
The Winged Hussars used them because of tradition. It was a great pride in being one of the chosen Winged Hussars. The Wings showed everyone that it was an elite unit. It also made a strange sound when they charged enemy ranks in the thousands. There are some very detailed firsthand reports from the Battle of Vienna where people describe a very loud and dark humming noise as they charged the Ottomans army. Some people heard it from inside the city, one or two kilometers away.
That charge by the way was the largest cavalry charge in human history. And they defeated the Ottomans and saved Europe from Islam. It was such a humiliating defeat for the Ottomans that Ottoman officers strangled their own commander (Pasha) with a silk rope... they never tried to invade central Europe again.
The Winged Hussars often fought vastly outnumbered (some times 10 to 1) but always won. They were undefeated for 125 years.
If I were of polish origin I would be very proud.

10 to 1 is bit overestimate IMHO Battle under Kluszyn was ~6000 Hussars and other cavalry (plus 200 infantryman:) ) versus 38000 Russians and Sweden mercenaries.
Wings had few appliances. Outside humming voice they had psychological effect (would somebody like to stand with pike against charging hussars?), similar to Rittbergers of Teutonic Knights (those gentlemen had helms with horns) and it's said, that those wings were useful, when hussar was caught with lasso. Not always those wings were attached to the armor, often to the saddle. About being unbeatable, Sweden were able to come up with good tactics against pure, old fashioned Hussars charge.

I'm very proud of them, as well as ours desperate stopping Soviets from trampling whole Europe after Great War. But I think every nation has something to be proud of and something shameful as well.

Check on wikipedia, when Winged Hussars were fielded and just don't jump on such assumptions anymore. Against Mongols no one was strong enough. Lithuania rose thank them (they rampaged mainly in Russian lands), we were rich enough just to pay tribute and that would be all. But I will turn it other way, which nation, outside Mongols was able to get a hold on Kremlin ? :p

Poland was kinda awesome back in the day. Biggest country in Europe, largest cavalry charge in history, saving the Austrians, occupying Moscow, early example of a democratic state (though with a very small franchise, of course), warring with the Turks, even stopping the Soviet advance in the 1920s... it's kinda a pity that all the West knows about them is the partitions/WW2/Communism.

And the Winged Hussar is a great UU! Very deadly in the right situation.

I'm now going to have a game with all cavalry warmongers in it. May the best cav win.
