they should make barbarians less powerful

Does barbarian spawn rate vary with difficulty level? For example, would there be more barbs when playing at Deity level rather than playing at Prince?

pretty sure it's always the same rate. First barbarian always seems to spawn at turn #10 on a camp that was there from the start.

I think you may have discovered a whole new difficulty level, the tried and trusted Tradition/Liberty openings don't help when you have a constant wave of barbarians paying your city a visit. I felt I need a garrison in each city plus at least 2 units to deal with each camp and there were usually multiple camps to deal with.

I feel it is a good way to add extra challenge if things are a bit easy on whatever difficulty level you are on. I wouldn't recommend 2 maps sizes larger unless you really know what you are doing as it can be overwhelming if your starting location is particularly isolated. My workers were kept very busy repairing damaged improvements and combat units had a number of narrow escapes while exploring and hunting.

Glad you enjoyed it, you should check out how the AIs suffer from it, they really can't handle that kind of aggression :)

I find it a lot easier to catch up to them on immortal / diety when the AI struggles to stay alive in the early game. It feels like win/win, the early game is far more interesting and you can go up a difficulty level.

Remember the grand old days of Civ when goodie huts would sometimes spawn barbarians that would completely surround your warrior (scouts always got positive returns). Now that was FUN!

-_-

I think I blocked that out of my memory. So much blood...

I can hear those warriors grunt in my head now, and the soft thud they made when they hit the ground. :eek2:

I have noticed the AI are pretty poor for a long while with your settings. But the really great thing is that horsemen are really useful, barbarian horsemen on the other hand are a real menace. I like to get the Pyramids so my workers can quickly repair all the damage, establish a defensive perimeter and then expand. Gold has to be carefully managed and it can pay off to get a number of Ancient/Classical techs. The interesting thing is that I usually have a lot of happiness until well into the Medieval era. This leads to big cities producing a lot of science.

My wife and I are trying this out in a multi-player but keeping the CS as standard for the map size. Our experiences are quite different; she is almost being overrun by barbs but they almost died out on my continent despite only building 3 cities along the coast.

Don't go near them and be more careful when scouting. Scouts aren't supposed to fight.

Isn't there an option to turn barbarians off if they are too hard for you?

Maybe for you, but I fight with scouts all the time. Then again, I'm fairly decent at asymmetric warfare in this game.

Barbarians need to be more powerful.

I mean, not in the sense of the strength of the units, but they should be able to capture and occupy cities including capitals.

Though, it is annoying sometimes when the camp spawn rate is like a new unit every 4 turns or so.

Barbarians have never been too much of a problem for me... They're annoying, but don't need to be nerfed.
