They're All Barbarians.

cathy is so far away though...plus, when we raze her cities, we're just clearing them for another AI. I like hole up with some active defense and work on the homefront. i wonder, though, if holing up will only put a few nails on our collective coffins re: AI tech lead.

I'm hoping that nobbling her current stackette and reclaiming Shim City should be enough to get peace with Catwoman. We don't have open borders with barbarians of course so we'd have to annihilate the mongol barbs first.

In terms of keeping up with the AI: expansion can be vertical as well as horizontal. While we're diverting resources to unit building we're working fewer commerce tiles, running fewer specialists etc.

Had another closer look, as I guess I'm still up. :p

Regarding Russia, I think it should be possible to recapture Shimo with our stack that's on the way back, meanwhile annihilating the Russian stackettes that are roaming in the north. I suppose that should be sufficient for peace with Russia on our terms (or at least straight up peace).

Will keep on pumping military generally. Some infra should be whipped in newer cities.

We probably should throw a golden age and swop civix.
Well yes! I noticed we have a GM hanging around since like forever, as well as a scientist. Moreover, we have no specialists hired whatsoever in our NE city, but hiring 6 of them gives another one in 7 turns. A GM would bulb banking after guilds. Hence, I'm thinking that either we launch a GA with the GS now, with the idea of bulbing banking with the GM after guilds and switch to vassalage and mercantilism. The latter will be a decent boost for us with specs in all cities and the most logical econ civic anyway with our variant (well SP later possibly). Or alternatively, launch a GA with whatever great person we pop from Tokyo in 7 turns and as well bulb banks and take vassalage+merc. GS could then be saved for something else. It could bulb philo now, so we open up the path to nationalism which looks interesting. In that case, supposing we bulb philo and banking, what next after guilds? Nationalism or gunpowder?

I'm not sure if I can play a full set tomorrow or Saturday, on Sunday I should have a lot of time though. So latest I'll play is by then.

After reading carefully the flood of feedback on my proposal, I adjusted accordingly and went ahead and played on. That's to say, I went ahead with my plan.:(:mischief::) (mix of emotions here, also because of a CTD)

While Cathy moved her stackettes of HAs, WEs and wounded siege to the east, we moved our stack back towards Shimo, meanwhile diverting some troops to our NE, in case Cathy would make a move. However, she seemed more interested in the Barb city way east. Unfortunately she's moving her troops just across the border through Mongolia which makes it impossible to peel off units without DoWing the Khan. When our stack reaches Shimo, it encounters only futile resistance.

TAAB_3_Civ4ScreenShot0413.jpg

Meanwhile tweaked the cities a bit to speed up Guilds slightly, timing it to be in at the moment our next great person is born in Tokyo. When that happens (a GS), launch a GA with him, bulb banking with the GM we had hanging around forever and revolt to vassalage and mercantilism.

TAAB_3_Civ4ScreenShot0417.jpg

Contemplate here whether it is worth it to bulb philo with the GS we had hanging around and continue nationalism. Notice we can probably tweak more cities to have nationalism before the GA ends, so we could go for nationhood and have the draft available. While gunpowder is nice, muskets are not better than our samurai, so go for it and bulb philo and continue nationalism.

After capturing Shimo, Cathy will not talk peace yet on reasonable terms, as she wants Shimo back. We laugh at her face and hope she will make a move back in soon. Some turns later she actually does, moving her stackettes back and positioning it at the gates of Yokohama, where her units are duely slaughtered. That makes her see the wrongs of her ways and she pays 245 gold for peace. Take it as we have no more pressing business to do with her (screenshot lost).

Continue producing units and move them back towards Fukushima, where we see no signs of instability in reactors 1-4 by the way. Only encroaching Indian culture. Other than that been producing some infra in newer cities.

As I hand it off we have 6 turns left on the GA, while nationalism is due in 5, so we could still revolt. Do note I put 5 or 6 cities on wealth to keep our research rate up. Also, a great person will be born in Kyoto in 5 turns, with another one following in Tokyo shortly after (says 6 now, but that will obviously be some turns more). I thought it important to keep pushing a bit with great people as bulbing seems to get us forward still a bit, or alternatively, a subsequent GA with these 2 great people won't be entirely awful either.

Tech picture doesn't look all that awful, especially when we hit nationalism. The only AI that really worries me is Cyrus (with Saladin as a good 2nd), who has education already and who incidentally is Asoka's master. I think we'll just have to build up an enormous SoD, helped by the draft, and then try to romp through the subcontinent and start chewing off the Persians. A 2nd GA might help with the preparations. In any case probably gunpowder after nationalism so at the end we can add some muskets as stack defense. Some pikes may help too. More siege won't hurt either. I wouldn't bother with the Indian islands, I think if we want to have a chance to win the game we should start stomping the Persians rather soon, say within a turn or 20, 30 maybe.

Gone a bit quiet round here. Sure sign we're doing badly

The barbarians despite their 'advances' seem to be ignoring gunpowder. Have to check GP preferences but research gunpowder, GS bulb chem, tech steel sounds froody.

In the meantime we could beat up on GK a bit (keeping a defence down south to avoid repetition of recent embarassment).

nice job on russia. i wonder if it would be worth gobbling up the smaller nations as we can up north, and makign a move on persia later on down the line....

myabe we can send a spy or two westward to see what sort of units Persia's got sitting around, too.

RRRaskolnikov seems to have disappeared. I'll try one of these flash pm things, if no reply in 24 hours then time to skip to cripp7.

No word from RRRaskolnikov.

Skipped/swopped.

cripp7 is UP.

Defend down south. Kill GK.

I really wouldn't bother with GK and rather concentrate on India and Persia instead as suggested.

It's all well and good saying 'focus on India and Persia'. The question I have is 'how'? Medieval warfare seriously favours the defender; we'd need to spend a set or two building up a decent force of trebs to knock down castle walls or whip our cities to the bone and nerf our economy in the process. The downside of that is that we'll end up fighting rifles with sams and trebs.

GK is the only barbarian who's actually less advanced that we are and therefore the only target we can take out soon.

Alternatively we could hole up, build our economy and wait for steel.

Spending a set or 2 preparing is what I proposed in the report. Build an enormous sod helped by draft. Beelining steel sounds like a plan. GK can be taken out any time, now he'd only be a distraction while his turf wouldn't mean a great addition to the empire.

Yup, GK can be taken out as soon as we want. India too ... the issue is the big blue blob known as Persia....

I agree with nocho. We need one or two sets of army building to take out those foes ... but one thing we can do in between is to finish the Chinese. Yes, they have a city in the southern India and India will not OB with us so soon IIRC, but we need to take the chinese culture out of this world. I'm sick and tired of them putting cities in holes with their culture and/or getting AP resolutions to give cities back to the chinese. And we are already in war with them :p

Deciding with the group a buildup round is in store here.

Most bizarre. My machine crashes half way through loading the save.. (three times in a row)...

Really:confused: I tried it myself, crash...tried the last 4 autosaves and same result, finally found one that loaded. I'll replay those 4 turns and resave

Ok, fixed the save and pics in the turnset.

Just a building round, didn't whip at all. Drafted a few samuris for up north for GK while building trebs. I think putting a few cities on :gold: duty will help push through GP fast @100%:science:

We do have enough to take out India to our west, just need some LBs for new city CG duty. One settler in Fuku and another being built in Kyoto.

India looks fine, we just have to worry about the persian barbarians claiming some kind of feudal relationship and declaring on us (particularly as they have open borders with all the other barbarians), but do we care? Nah. Kill them all.

Sorry for disapearing again (OT, but I am finishing the report of my phd, I had to finish a first version for this week... anyway I should be a bit more reliable now) Got it for tmr. Killing India is the plan it seems...

Killing India in India will probably give us the same headache as killing China in China, they'll keep reappearing demanding cities from AP and being a general pain. But of course they'll be a pain, they're all barbarians you know.

@ RRRaskolnikov: does this mean you'll have to change your boardname to DrRRRRaskolnikov?
