Isn't the King James text "thou shalt do no murder" or something to that effect? I've never seen that commandment worded consistently, ever.

In french it say," tu ne tueras point", if i translate it give, you wont kill at all. No ambiguity here in french, but like the picture show, some poeple think they have the right to kill and be on god side, ridicoulous.

However, my personal interpretation is that the Ten Commandments mean you shouldn't murder anyone, but killing can be OK in rare cases.

The Old Testament, for example.
Wrong, i had a very good discusion about that with Lefty Scavola and the original table on wich god supposidly writh it are lost, so nobody know exactly what was written on it.
If you refer to new testament, under Jesus recomandation, you must not kill at all, even for self defense, if you do so, you save your life on earth, but loose the eternal life in Jesus kingdome.
I am preety sure some old translator use ambiguity to satisfy their own perception.
Modern hebrew dictionaries are based on the Hebrew of the bible. As a matter of fact, the Hebrew bible is the book Eliezer Ben Yehuda based himself on in order to write the first Modern Hebrew dictionary.
These are not "word of mouth" translations. Aside Slang and words that are a direct result of post-biblical languages and modern inventions, a modern hebrew speaker could communicate perfectly with a biblical hebrew speaker.

The so-called Ten Commandments are just part of a comprehensive set of instructions. Only 30 verses later in the next chapter it says "Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death." (RSV) Which is interesting, because (a) it implies that either women aren't capable of such cursing or that they are specially exempt from punishment, and (b) that most people are today conveniently forgetting this rather awkward and oft broken instruction.

This is from the original latin version of the bible. It is called vulgata, cause 'ordinary people', that is people without knowledge of greek could read it.

You can debate the history and technicality of the written text, but I personaly have no misunderstanding of the 'spirit of the Law' - as they say. It's wording changed back and forth, as you can see. But it's meaning - has not.
