Can't someone just use the "Mark forums read" button at the top if they don't want old threads to be unread?

I think you mean for threads to be marked as "read", but yeah, that's how the current "Unwatch" Button works.

Yes, they sure can.
But... I think I had for a test set this limit to like... I don't know... a very long time. Then all forums popped up as unread, and I wasn't sure anymore in which forum something new had been posted. Was not convenient either.
