Timer dicussion

I will be OK with 12 hours shorter timer. This translates in to 24 hours more frequent turns. Right now the timer is 48 RL hours, right?

That's correct, the timer is currently set to 44 hours, which translates to roughly 48 RL hours. Since the APTMod gives each side the full timer during wartime, this can potentially mean 96-hour turns, but WPC has been doing a good job of playing early so I'd say we're actually averaging about 60-hour turns.

The current tally, by my count:

Leave timer at 48 hours indefinitely: 1 (classical_hero)

Leave timer as is now, reduce it to 36 hours after the war: 4 (Cav Scout, RegentMan, Calis, talonschild)

Reduce timer to 36 hours after holiday season: 1 (1889)

Reduce timer to 36 hours immediately: 3? (YossarianLives, Maga_R, 2metraninja?)

Reduce timer to 24 hours: 0

Of course this is all unofficial. If this is brought up again in the public thread, then I think we should hold an official team vote.

It is after the holiday season now :-) So 1889 should be count with me, 2metra and Yossarian

Just got back and am catching up, but ya, the timer could come down a bit.

Welcome back, mate. Hope you had a great time on the vacation. And as an already established tradition, "pics or it did not happened" :D

As for the timer, it will make most sense to decrease it now, when he is double. With 2x48 hours, we have 96 hours timers. When/if the war ends, shortening the timer to 36 hours will mean it is only 1/3 of the timer now. Quite drastic in my opinion. Better to shorten him now to 36 hours so 2x36 hours will result in 72 hours timer and when the war is over to increase it again to 48 hours.

But I really doubt this can be made without the consent of Ze Germans and they will not agree I can bet. So we are speaking in principle. Yossa hit the nail very well in his proposed response to RB, that if we force the Germans to shorter timer, we might lose them as team.

So, we voted and our official team position is that we agree to reduce the turn timer to 36 hours. We informed RB about our position, and they immediately posted this proposal:

Team RB, with the aim of increasing participants' enjoyment, the efficiency of this game, improving interest and getting more than 9 turns per month, would like to propose the following:

a. During wartime only, the timer is shortened to 36 real-time hours. This takes effect on the first turn after that war has been declared.

b. The game host gets permanent delegation to implement this change, and to switch back to the regular timer of 48 real-time hours on the turn after the war has ended.

c. The declaring team must notify the game host immediately upon opening war. The team that has the first half of the war turn order must notify the game host upon peace.

d. The game host gets permanent delegation to adjust the Pitboss turn timer so that the goal of 48 real-time hours can be best met, ie so that turns rolls at roughly the same time every day.

These changes are mainly motivated by the mod's approach to splitting the turn timer. Team RB was under the (mistaken) belief that the turn timer would be shared (ie half each) by the waring teams instead of what has actually happened (each team gets a full turn timer) that, effectively doubles the turn timer (in the most extreme case) during war.

Further, we would also like to suggest the following clarification to rule 5g ...

Game Reloads - All game reloads will trigger an automatic game pause (game admin will post such in game pause thread) for a minimum maximum of 24 hours or until each team that logged in to the game after the reload point has not yet finished their turn has stated in the game pause thread that they are ready to continue. A team may log in, unpause, and finish turn, but must then pause again under this rule.
Edit: Fixed strike-out / underlying as per post #2

The first change makes sure that we have an upper limit for those pauses. The second is aimed at clarifying which teams need to indicate that they are ready to continue. A team that has finished its turn as per the reloaded save has already indicated that it is ready for the next turn and doesn't need to provide that notification again. It also opens up the simple way of giving notice by simply unpausing, finishing turn, and then pausing again.

While this is not exactly what we voted on, I actually think it does a good job of addressing some of our concerns (such as the timer being too short during non-war times). I think we should go ahead and publically voice our support for this.

Caledorn, this puts some extra responsibilities on you as host. Any issues with the proposal?

I think they see us more as organizers of the game, rather than a power to be considered (maybe sharp tongue hahah), but you might be right.

I don't understand why are we increasing the timer back to 48 after the war. That is somthing players can propose if they feel it necessary. Everything else sounds good.

I think we just need to agree to it as is, or nothing will ever get passed. I actually like the change back to 48 hours in peacetime.

2metraninja, do you want to announce our support for the timer reduction? I think our vote will carry more of the influence that RB implied if our position is coming from one of the organizers of the game.

I do think it's important to respond soon, though, so I'll go ahead and post our vote tomorrow if you don't get to it before then.

WPC is yes to both.

And thanks for your comments Sommers! :)

 This was funny. Apparently, Sommersninja (or is it 2metraswerd?) earned us some brownie points with WPC. I do think it was the right call to have one of the game organizers cast our vote, and it would be great if Sommerswerd is still around and wants to get more active in this game.

It was nice to see the Germans respond positively to WPC's request in the public thread to end their turn before the timer ran out this time.

It would be really funny if they were trying to remind everyone that Sommers is on our team.

LOL, he wrote that? Yes he did, just checked. I dont know why he did that mistake. Maybe part because we with Sommers are the organizers of the game, maybe part because we are very often allies/team members with Sommers in the games we played at WPC and maybe part because Sommers (despite the controversial reputation he might have at CFC and RB, @Cav ;)) is know as game organizer, Game Master and game host over at Apolyton/WPC and Beta plays in those games, so he may just thinks of him as of authority/organizer figure, where I am more renowned for my in-game play over there. I can also bet that the wine+civ combo Beta is known with have also something to do with this :D

Beside this, I claim all the brownies we got with WPC from this my (btw absolute sincere) post. Sportsmanship I will always admire. Also finding an elegant way of overcoming delicate situation for the sake of the game and the other participants. :) Yes, we have ways of changing the rules mid-game, but I think they are meant for something much different from a team in difficult situation wanting more time for input to play. We could not had 100% votes for shorter timer anyway and reaching for the admin to force this rule I think would have been mistake.

It was nice to see the Germans respond positively to WPC's request in the public thread to end their turn before the timer ran out this time.
Yep, sportsmanship inspires sportsmanship I believe. On the more trivial side, I think Germans stabilized the front and the immediate threat is gone, so not much decisions to be made anyway.

 I think it is the wine+civ combo as 2metra said.

And I support the timer reduction... Not that it matters as the issue has been decided already it seems:)

;)I doubt anyone at RB needs any reminding of that;)... But I have been so engrossed in the Diplogame I am hosting as well as the other games I was playing (before stupid Artemis went down:mad:) that ISDG has become my redheaded stepchild (no offense to redheads...including my Avatar)

2metra definitely deserves the browing points for any love we get from WPC. My rep over there is a mixed bag at best and I think it is safe to say that at least a few of the "hate" me (in a Civ sense of course not in RL).

 Hey, redheads need love and attention, too! The turns are picking up, our diplo is back in full swing, and our civ is starting to hit it's stride, so now would be a great time for you to jump back in. I miss your long lawyer posts!

Mmmm.. redheads... I had a crush on one in 7-th grade and still those are like fetish for me :)
