To Hell With Firaxis

Be mad at Intel, not Firaxis. Today is 2005, this game requires 2001 graphic card capabilities!

Speak for yourself. I have a 2002 video card, and it still is not working properly.

And more, I love this ever-pervasive, blase, "get a new videocard!" panacea. This game is CIVILIZATION. The average consumer doesn't expect (nor was it advertized) that the game would require advanced hardware. A lot of users (like myself -- in college) have LAPTOP -- not desktop -- computers.

How do you say to someone with a laptop that runs other RPG, FMV, Strategy, and builder games just fine that CIVILIZATION 4 is "too good" for your computer?

Sorry if this sounds ignorant to anyone, by all means. But Civ has never been the graphical wonderland of wonders that required heavy resources or graphic capabilities. It was about gameplay and immersion. Civ 4 is very pretty to listen to (and look at), but seriously... this "graphical move" is cutting out a very large base of consumers -- and though I love my sexy Catherine very much (though her Civilopedia entry is bogus bogus bogus), I am NOT tearing open my laptop and trying to force some extra RAM chips *and* see if the video hardware can be upgraded for one game.

Can we be mad at Firaxis for not using the correct version of DX instead?

Hey, you know... that happens more frequently than you may think... Especially when the library you are using (DirectX in this case) is updated every three months.... Anyway, I won't (hopefully) have any problems with that. It's been some time now I've using the DXSDK runtime (that basically means that debugging symbols are still active on your DLL.).

And regarding the previous post "But Civ has never been the graphical wonderland of wonders". Now it apparently is. As many others said, the franchise needed to evolve. And it did. Period.

How do you think i reacted when my copy of Black and White 2 arrived and i couldn't run (and still, in some way, can't) properly? I was expecting more from my new laptop (which, luckyly enough for me, is and high-end Desktop replacement. I've been saving for a looong looong time...), but hey, you can't have everything in life, do you?

p.s.
I WANT THE GAME, DAMMIT!!!! How come germany already got it and it's IMPOSSIBLE to find it here in Switzerland?!?!? pfffff......

I agree with you. Providing you have have minimum requirements and the CIV IV settings all to minimum and it still will not run, then unfortunetly yes this is the developers problem. And I agree as well, the too often coin phrase "upgrade your...." when it should be working is very unhelpful and almost smug and arrogant.

a lot of you ppl need to UPGRADE your cards......most games nowdays require AT least a 9800 pro or Nvidia equivalent......cant play new games on old hardware.

No im not smug about anything....times are changing and Civ is moving along with the times, you didnt expect it to keep using the same old looks or engine forever did you???? It Evolved

Working with a LAPTOP COMPUTER makes it a little HARDER to swap video cards -- don't you agree? Or do you again want to denigrate into a fantasy land where video cards fall from the trees this October morning?

You should find out what's going on before spouting off, people with top of the line systems are having problems. It has nothing to do with inferior cards. If you would have bothered to do some reading on the issue you would have been able to figure that out.
