To steam or not to steam...

that is the question I pose to my fellow fanatics.

I hadn't played Civ in over a decade and relished the fond memories of slamming Cokes, devouring Gushers till the early morn playing the original.

Fast forward to six months ago when I finally purchased my very own home computing device. A beautiful 27 inch iMac. One the first things I did was hit the AppStore in search of awesomeness. Lo, and behold, Civ 5 there I found. Without hesitation my purchase was complete and the many late nights of Civ began.

Time passes and I come to find out about a little of Steam.

Cut to the chase...should I repurchase CiV through Steam? I would love some human competition and this Mod biz has perked my interests. Is it worth it being that I am a Mac man. Your thoughts and insights are coveted. Thank you.

Check over in the main forums & multiplayer forums here. There's usually several games going (depending on your region), but many people find the multiplayer in Civ V unsatisfying.

Also, there's a chance that Aspyr might do GameCenter integration into the App Store version. I don't work for them so I can't even say for certain it's on their radar, let alone how long it might take, but if they do it then you could get Mac-Mac multiplayer out of your current version.

I also got my Civ V from the app store.
I am distressed because I cannot play MP, I cannot locate the save files for it, and I cannot find the world editor that is on steam.
If anyone has any suggestions...

The first and third are "features". The App Store version includes only local multiplayer (LAN), hence why it's called "campaign edition". And the world editor is just PC-only.

You should be able to find the save files though..

There's an Ingame Editor mod by DonQuiche that does a pretty good job as a world editor.

I've responded in your other thread to your question about the location of saves. It changed from the original release to the current one.

from everything i've read, i'm completely unimpressed with the app store version thus far. steam just seems to have greater functionality anyway you slice it.

True. The App Store version is for people who:
- Want a couple of pieces of DLC thrown in for free, and don't care about multiplayer, or
- Aren't aware of Steam, or
- Are philosophically opposed to Steam for one reason or another.
