Thats a first for me..... Anyone had this happen before? :p

(And no it doesn't count if you played Japan yourself.. ;))

I expected Hannibal to discover it since i was busy crushing the egyptians. (Former score leader/ tech leader) Funny surprise that backwards Tokugawa got it first! ;)

I have had this happen. Similar situation in that everyone seemed to be in wars while T sat around maintaining his meager empire.

Actually it's just me fighting here, they either declare on me or get bribed by me to fighting each other. I don't think Hannibal has been involved in one war yet (which is odd) while Tokugawa has been my protector against the heathens Ragnar and Shaka (former heathen) :p

(gotta love bribing AI's :p )

Ha,ha :) That is an odd one. I've actually seen "Barbarian is the first to discover Liberalism" (yes, it can happen, just set barbarian spawning ten times higher) but never Tokugawa.

He's technologically challenged

haha i don't think so i have EVER seen that! he often stays backwards. i'm guessing +shared faith with so many civs helped him get trading buddies?
my recent game with aggressive AI and mostly warmongers he did very well and really surprised me. it made sense tho once thought i about it. because the AIs on the map were mostly the warmongers, he started off with better invisible relations with those guys. and they all used the nonwarmongers as punching bags. i spread "the right" religion that i wanted to use to the warmongers so that they'd get along with me, and that also helped his relations with them too. i think he also benefited from tech trading a lot more than he usually would due to be friendly with more civs than in 4 normal games combined. in fact, he was friendly even with me, and gave me chemistry for economics and nationalism, when only 2 people knew chemistry. this is toku, he will not trade techs until everybody he knows except that person knows them unless he's friendly with the trader. combine that with open borders and tech trades themselves gaining you the +s to get to friendly, he rarely gets to friendly with folks to ever do tech trades, so he has to do his research himself or by pointy stick and that's part of why he usually stays behind.

in my game, he ended up with a pretty big chunk of land during the wars with the peaceful AIs. late game he led the AIs in score, techs, and power. in a shocking move, he actually left merc  for free market in 1613 and that was the right move for him at that time, since he had OB with so many civs with good cities that he got good trade routes. he did really really well. ummm, until after i won the game officially and decided to do my "hey how fast can i take over these specific japanese cities since i want what's in them" backstab. after that, well, he kinda sorta wasn't doing so hot.

that's insane. he must've had some precious metals in his empire. did he end up with good relations with 1+ civ to at least have some trading buddies?

Yeah, everyone except Shaka and Ragnar has been Jewish most of the game. At this point i'm friendly with both Tokugawa and Hannibal (even with -6 you declared war on our friend in Hannibals case :p ) the sisters of faith bonus is +6 so i guess relations is good. (as mentioned earlier, the only wars fought here is by me ;) )

Barbarians first to discover liberalism?! I need a screenshot to confirm. That's cool enough to include as my profile picture.

That is almost unheard of.

Tokugawa is usually at the bottom of the barrel for tech.

He must have cheated.
