The AI *does* know the entire map. However, it has been programmed to behave as if it does not (in most situations).

Except when sending settlers out!
Well, I *did* say "... in most situations...." ;)

In late Ancient Times and most of the way throught the Middle Ages you can make an awful lot of money by brokering maps. It's just a shame that it takes so much time & effort :)

On a large map with the standard 11 opponents I would expect to make ~15-20gpt easily if I can be bothered to swap the various AI in and out of the FA screen :(

For got one more thing..MONEY!!! lol

Another thing is that if you trade you map to the AI, this is better because you might get some gold out of it, or maybe thier map, instead of having the AI demand your map, and potentially getting it for free. Some more 2 cents of mine . . .

Good points, RG. Something I usually don't consider. Might as well scam the AI out of some gold for something they already 'know'.

Agree with U.:goodjob: Great Light House is an important wonder (for me). I usually send 2 galleys and every turns sells the map. I usually can get get like 5G-8G from every civs.

Hmm, personally I try to do without trading either of my maps, but getting everyone else's maps. For the greater part of the game I like to know that, short of espionage, no one can see my lands. Just a big black mass on their maps. They really seem eager for my territory map even, by industrial age.
Plus, the AI seems just a little too eager for other's maps, you noticed? I concern myself with where I'm at, and what land I have to work with. But the AI players seem to be taking note of things on the maps they get that I haven't thought about...
