Trading. What do you use it for?

As a fairly new PAE player, I've been trying to use trading more in my games but I can't see why I should do it.

Can you share strategies/tips and explain what you use trading for so I can start doing it too.

I am playing and replaying the huge map with 24 civs and barbarian cities. My trading strategy is:

1. Get open borders with a neighboring civ and move gold carts from captured cities to that civ’s cities. You will get a set amount of gold when you sell the cart abroad which on average is usually more than the random amounts you get when you sell them to your capital. You will also get a very (very, very) small chance of building a trade road. The trade road will start from the AI civ’s city which initially helps that civ. However this will be the start to all of the trade roads you are going to getting in your lands and they are awesome. They give an extra coin per tile and are a free road that you don’t have to build with a worker. Once you get trade roads linked up to your cities (2 per coastal city and 3 for inland), then you get a trading center in that city. Since the last update, I have only gotten a trade road built in the city tile when sending gold carts to that city. In games prior to the update, I would get a small road of three or four tiles from that city towards my capital from selling all of the gold carts--and this was before discovering trade or spoked wheels!

2. Build the Silk Road to get the free 3 camel caravans and then build 3 more regular caravans. Send those back and forth to trade with neighboring civ for gold to support your empire. You also get additional chances to get another extension to your trade roads each time you sell the goods.

3. Trade resources to boast the bonus you get for your cults. For example, trade to get grains and livestock to get a bigger bonus for the fertility cult.

4. Gift resources to get even more friendly with neighboring civs to keep your open borders to send caravans and build more trade roads.

5. Eventually you get to trade for resources you don’t have. Horses, grapes, grains, olives, dates can be traded for and then grown in your lands (You have to use a wagon I think except for grapes).

Depending on what map you're on and what civ you're playing, trading may be the only way to get some important resources. For instance you may have no grain or cow or sheep. If you trade for them you can build a wagon and distribute that resource. Sometimes trading is the only way to get horses or grapes. Trade routes are very lucrative financally. And automated trade route (land or sea) can make you rich.
