Hi all,

Remember reading here about a line in rules.txt which can be changed to allow engineers on transports to transform ocean into land, but a quick search was fruitless. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Have a look in the rules.txt and scroll down to the terrain section. There are several columns; the last column tells what transforming the terrain will give; replace the "no" with the 3 letter code of the terrain you want to be transforming the ocean into (the code for each terrain is found after the semicolon). I don't know if the game will allow you to use the transform order on the ocean anyway, but that is how you would do it. Remember to make a backup copy of the rules text before editing.

Thanks for your help Prof. Unfortunately the game won't let me transform ocean regardless of the value of that column. Seems to be something to do with it maintaining a list of landmasses and seas (coordinates are given as (x,y)z, where z is a unique code for the landmass or sea. Disappointing; was hoping to upgrade my transport chains to railways.

For the amount of engineer time that it would take to do that, you would probably be better off using a shipchain anyway.

In Civ1 you could build a road/railroad on the ocean. You would not be able to travel on it, but you would get the benefits (increased resources).
