We were probably too old when the TF's came out. My childhood favorite was the back-to-back power of Ultraman and Speed Racer.

Oh my! Someone else who remembers Ultraman! :goodjob: How about Johnny "I got a cool bodyguard" Sokko, eh?

It was better than I thought, but not amazing. Not especially moving, and the camera was too close in on most of the combat for me to comprehend and enjoy.

I'm glad it's apparently worth it. I'd really hate to see my childhood favourites ruined by a bad movie.
Its a B-. The first third is an A, middle part is terrible, and the last part is all action if thats your thing so its a weak ok. I went in with low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised.

Spoiler :
The thing is, this movie cost upwards of $150 million to make. With all of this $$$ being thrown at the project, dont ya think a director with a better editing eye and track record, in addition to some half decent writers would have been good hires? And if you are spending that much on the movie, why sell out to General Motors for $3 million for product placement? GM got a steal here, since the placements are literally shoved down moviegoers' throats.

The movie began well. "A boy and his car" worked, and since this was ordered from on high (Spielberg's selling point to movie execs), I was not surprised. Sure Bumblebee is a Camaro; not faithful to the original but I can buy it. He looks good, and is a bit more macho here. Good upgrade. The army scenes were good, and relevant I thought. The G1 "battles spanning the globe" theme is intact with the action in Qatar, so thats a nice touch. And of course the CGI is great.

The movie starts downhill when the autobots show up. Prime has flames (uh...) but I can live with that. Ironhide has a tougher look and feel so good upgrade there (he could have been red at least, but that may have conflicted with Prime for non-TF people). The others are a bit on the weak side, Jazz has somewhat of a ghetto "personality," not that his character is developed at all. Ratchet was again underdeveloped and he didnt really even fix anyone in the movie aside from shooting some laser at someone in a half assed plot device to show he is a medic. And Prime comes off as a wuss. Cant go help Bumblebee? Why not grab the helicopters and set them down and take the guns away from the Sector 7 people again?

And speaking of Sector 7. WHAT?!??! If there was ever a more useless plot device it was these guys. John Turturro is terrible (and I like him as an actor). He could have been wearing his purple bowling suit and he would have been just as effective. Our whole modern society being developed from electronics obtained from studying Megatron is ridiculous and insulting to ones intelligence. We could do without this whole sequence, as well as the NSA analyst-her hacker friend storyline. Why were these useless characters fleshed out but not the stars of the movie, the giant honking robots?

I thought it was a major strategic mistake to not make the middle of the movie about the Decepticons and to a lesser extent the Autobots. First third- decent human storyline, 2nd third- robot storyline, 3rd part- humans and robots fight together against bad guys. That would have been a simple and clean concept.

Megatron was pretty bad, he was kind of thrown in at the end. Ripping Jazz in half was cool, but he transforms into a jet and my wife had trouble telling Megatron from Starscream. He most definitely should have been more true to the original, ie a freaking gun. My brother in law mentioned that other successful comic book/animation movies took considerable creative licenses (X Men he mentioned), but I cant remember any where they changed the ENTIRE identity of a character is changed. He was not the calculating character he was supposed to be, and his jet form was lame. He just yelled a lot, and then died. Huh? sums up the entire last part of the movie.

I guess that was a bit of a geeky rant. Again I had low expectations of the movie and it was better than I anticipated, so why couldnt they have fixed the obviously dumb and irrelevant things to make it a great movie when they threw so much money at the project? And it has been scientifically proven that Soundwave is the #1 coolest character in all toydom, where was he in the movie?

It's 99% probable that it'll totally suck, and look totally pretty.
But looking pretty is what matters. I want explosions and fighting in my films, not deep moral conundrums created by idiots and bungled by them.

It'll be great to look at, just try to switch your brain off and it'll all be fine. But it's not out in Britain for a month! Idiots, I'll download it before then!
Where!? Name a site.

All action is good. Fleshing out human characters is not good. Why do I care about the characters? Go kill things, please.

Weren't there two cartoon films before this one? Does anyone remember? I still have one of them stacked away somewhere, but the other is a distant memory.

I went to the movies yesterday and saw this one. Great film I must say. The plot could have been better developed though. I think the plot took a little bit to long to unfold, and while the special effects are top notch, I think the film is missing a bit more "character". By that I mean that I was expecting something more a la Independence Day kind of film, with mankind fighting against a alien invader, showing the human spirit. However the movie is very close to the original series, and that would please the fans from the cartoon show. Certain parts of the film are funny and well made, however my only complain is that the plot could have been better. A sequel is certainly in the works now, let's hope it gets beter.
In short, this movie is well worth your time.

Ya know what? Looking back I think I like the animated Transformers movie more then I liked this one. This one is still great but the animated just seems better.

I dont trust this movie, its more than meets the eye. Ill probly see it for the cool action sequences alone. And anyways, everyone knows Beast Wars > Transformers.

This movie sucked miles of ass.

One of the worst cinematic experiences ever.

But then again it's Michael Bay. I should have known before I shelled out $10 for the ticket...

It was pretty good. I came in with no expectations, and it came out fairly well.

That could be because I have like zero memories of the animated transformers...

I think the special effects were done really well and stuff. :D

Well, there are apparently a lot of people that would disagree with you on that. Again, my whole family enjoyed this movie a lot. Like I predicted its going to be a big hit.

Me? I dunno. I was referring to Shia LeBeouf, aka the most annoying male lead ever to be cast in a film.:p

I can't even see how you could enjoy it. The transformers didn't even make a major appearance until about an hour into the film (until that point we had to deal with the whiny LeBeouf trying to pursue his angsty teenage libido goals), and when they did, Michael Bay's masturbatory CGI explosions only served to bore from there on out. The guy honestly can't think of any other device to titillate the audience. Not to mention the dialogue sucked, LeBeouf was a totally unsympathetic wuss-ass character, and the cop who is the head goon of Sector 7 was a laughably pathetic low calorie version of Al Pacino.

Megan Fox was alright I guess, but then again she just looks like a knock off of Lindsay Lohan.:crazyeye:

I still haven't seen it, but I'm a huge fan of the original series and hate everything that has been done after it (beast wars, the really new ones out now, etc).

You mean that guy ISN'T Al Pacino? When I saw him in the trailer I assumed it was because he looks alot like him... weird.
