I know this is a noobie question but I use a Mac (dual 867 g4 cheesegrater), so I figure I have the right to post it here :P I played a game where the comps transported to islands WAY before transport ships were available. How do you do that?

How do you know they are there? If you can get to the islands to see them then they can get there to occupy them. Galleys and caravels are transports too.

Thanks...I knew they were there by watching the replay after the game was over :)

What was the date they first moved to an island, and how are you sure they didn't have map making then?

I'm just speculating ... If they were expansionist/commercial then they would start with alphabet and get techs from goody huts and trades. This would all go faster on higher difficulty levels. They could get to map making very early, and you wouldn't know, because until you get writing you can't see if they have it.

I didn't know you could use anything other than a transport ship (Industrial age). It was much earlier than that. Im sure they had map making (I did too...just didn't know you could transport using other ships). Gimme a break...I aint making this up...I'm just a noobie lol.

In ship unit entries in the civilopedia, there will be a number (if the ship can carry units) that states how many units the ship can hold. Same thing with armies, subs, carriers, and helicopters.

I built a helicopter once just to see what it looked like. I wasn't super-impressed and couldn't really see the point. But by that time in the game I'm usually focused totally on getting as much mech infantry and modern armour together as possible, plus rails, transports and airports to shift them around.

Another remote possibility is that the expanding cultural border popped a goody hut yielding a settler.
