im guessing you just got stabbed?

I'm guessing that too sadly - people forget this is a game played for fun :(

All civs, in SP or MP are playing to win. That is how it was historically. No Civ historically supported an ally if they had much to gain by backstabbing them. An alliance is useless if one side gets no benefit. They will only stab you in the back if they don't benefit. Otherwise, they are idiots.

Remembe,r this isnt' a team game. IMHO, if this game was about static teams, then it would be boring

To the contrary...

This can be played as a static teams game (as an option) and makes for a very interesting MP game. But, overall I agree that you should expect people to lie, steal and stab all they can to win -- that's their goal.

Expecting an artificial honor is unrealistic. Predicting that a person will act as you hope they will ultimately leads to disappointment.

Solution: Expect the worst :)

I took his statement in the literal sense and not in the sense of in-game. As he started a game then got screwed over b/c someone backed out, etc.

Yeah this is a game about creating a civ and by using the means that you have to do so...all the means...

On the flip side, you should probably keep a short list of people you can trust. Since having people who won't stab you in the back can be a really big advantage...

To the OP comment I say... Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

You need to put yourself on the other side of the equation and be the stabber just before becoming the stabbee.

If I see a weakness, I attack. For example my very first real multiplayer game. The second to best scoring player was the weakest as I saw it. We just had opened borders, and his defenses...pathetic. I had myself a good combo of spearmen, axemen, and swordsmen coming up to him. I would have gotten horses too! His cities were defended with one archer a peice. The thing is, the point of the game is to win. At one point you can be best friends, At another point you can be enemies. Take single player...Ive stabbed plenty of AIs in the back, and Im sure you have too.
Sadly the dude left the game a few turns before I declared war ;(
Then I declare war on everyone else...and they started whining and left...SISSIES >.<
